Spring has surely arrived at Willow Wind! The campus looks lush and green. Many of the fruit trees are blossoming, bulbs are sprouting up and the garden looks neat and full of tiny spring plants. We can always use garden help this time of year, so if you feel like getting your hands in the dirt, please check the Garden Volunteer Board in the office or contact Debbie. By the time you receive this newsletter, it will almost be time for our annual May Day Celebration. This is always a wonderful event, and I hope to see you all there. This is also the date of our FUN RUN Event. Dana can always use parent help to support the runners. Our final community event of the year, the Passport to Learning, will be coming up at the end of the month. This will be an exciting culmination of our efforts. The 8th graders will be presenting their Portfolios on that evening. Please make sure you walk through and talk to them about their work. The evening also includes a family picnic, 8th grade recognition and displays of work. That night, we also get our first look at the new yearbook. Join us for this wonderful evening on our beautiful campus. It is hard to believe that summer is almost here. Both the fall and spring sessions went by quickly, and here we are again getting ready for next year. MAY DAY CELEBRATION

Wednesday May 1st—12:30-2:00pm Help us celebrate May Day! Students will be

invited to make May Crowns throughout the

morning with their classes. After lunch, the

festivities begin at 12:30pm with everyone

gathering to watch the May Pole Dance on the

back lawn. When the May Dance is over, the

field day activities, crafts, and games will

begin. All Wednesday afternoon classes will be

cancelled so everyone can participate in the

celebration. This is also the day of the FUN

RUN!

Plan to join us for the wonderful community

event. Please remember to bring flowers

from your yard or garden for May

crowns. If you are unable to join us for the

afternoon, please make sure to pick up your

child at 2:00pm on that day.

HOW TO EXPRESS INTEREST IN

FALL 2019 COURSES After the Fall 2019 course proposals are

submitted, we need you to tell us which of the

proposed courses you would like to see offered.

This process is designed to determine what

the Willow Wind community wants. Families

can express interest in proposed classes May 1

-May 6. Proposals will be located in Debbie’s

office. Families express interest by reviewing

the submitted proposals, selecting TEN

classes per student they would like to see

offered, and signing the student or family

name on the back of the course proposal

forms. Without your vote, we don’t have clear

priorities.

JUNE WORKSHOP ARENA REGISTRATION—May 6th-10th

Willow Wind will be offering five days of fun

workshops beginning on Monday, June 3rd and

continuing through Thursday, June 6th. The

first morning of Workshop Week will be the

Bike-A-Thon. During the week, all Parent

Partner students (full time) will spend the

morning with their core teachers. Each

student will register for ONE afternoon

workshop that will meet each afternoon

Monday, June 3 – Thursday, June 6. The

district has scheduled a half day on Friday,

June 7th so afternoon workshops will not be

meeting that day. Homeschooling students are

welcome to join us for the Bike-A-Thon

Morning and register for an afternoon

workshop.

Descriptions of the workshops are included in

this newsletter. Please remember that

workshops are a required part of our

curriculum for full-time students.

Sign-ups will begin on Monday, May 6th at

8:00 am in the Administrative Office/

Resource Room. Families and / or students

may NOT register for students outside of

their family. This practice has felt unfair

to many families. Students are welcome

to register themselves – no parent

required! If there is a hardship, please

talk to Debbie before the first day of

registration. Registration forms will not be

mailed.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Sign- ups are on a

first-come, first-served basis. There will be no

waiting lists for workshops. Students must

meet the age requirement for the workshops

they are requesting. PLEASE PLAN TO PAY

FEES ON MONDAY, MAY 13 – THANKS!

to continue their education at the high school.

let the office know if you are able to help with set

up or clean up.

THE ASHLAND POLICE

DEPARTMENT WANTS YOUR INPUT!

A new community survey was released by the

Ashland Police Department (APD). In partnership

with the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission

and BetaGov, the brief, 10-item survey does not

collect identifying information so that responses

can be honest and accurate. The survey seeks

input on APD relationships and engagement with

the community.

All members of the community including students

and parents are encouraged to participate in this

survey, which can be found on the department’s

webpage, as well as at the website ashlandpd.com.

Hard copies of the survey can also be picked up

and turned in at the police department located at

1155 E. Main Street.

The survey closes the second week of June – let

your voice be heard!

PARENT PARTNER CONFERENCES

June 3rd-7th End of the year Parent Partner Conferences will

News from the Classroom Hummingbirds: Random Acts of Kindness

As you may have heard, students at Willow Wind have been working on

random acts of kindness. In first grade, the hummingbirds brainstormed

different ideas about small efforts we can make to help someone feel good.

Some of our ideas included: writing a sweet note and putting it on the door of a

neighbor, doing one small chore for a neighbor or elderly person you know-

carrying groceries or raking leaves, picking up trash somewhere around our

town, cleaning out drawers or closets and giving clothes to homeless persons,

taking food donations to the food bank, etc. Students were then asked to go

home and with their families choose an “act of kindness” to complete. After they completed their act of

kindness, students were given the opportunity to reflect on what they did and how it made them feel.

Ryker: I picked up trash at North Mountain Park. If you pick up litter, it

makes the environment healthier.

Linden: I donated to the food bank. It helps by donating food to homeless

people. It made me feel happy.

Brynn: I gave a thank you note to my neighbor’s cat because her cat

(Charlie) plays with my cat. It made me feel happy to give a note because Charlie’s owner kept saying

“thank you!”

Students are learning that a simple, thoughtful effort can have a positive impact on their community.

The Hummingbird class is currently working on a book that will share the various acts of kindness that

they did throughout the community.

Students also decided that they wanted to do a book drive to collect books for other children who don’t

have access to books. In May, we will be collecting and donating books to the Migrant Education

Program in Ashland.

News from the Community Association

Willow Wind Bike-A-Thon 2019

Mark your calendar for our 4th Annual Event:

Monday, June 3rd, 2019, 8:30 am-11:45 am

Go Green For Our New Greenhouse!

It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year, so let’s bike for our school!

Join us for a fun morning of BIKING, bike decorating, games and lots of school & community spirit. Money raised will go towards the Willow Wind Greenhouse.

Students, with their bikes (or any wheeled, NON-motorized item like scooters) and helmets, will ride in or be dropped off the morning of June 3rd.

Prior to the Bike-A-Thon, kids will get family & friends to sponsor their ride with a one-time flat donation to Willow Wind.

Parents are encouraged to stay at the event, cheer, volunteer & get in those final family service hours. We’re going to need parent helpers to keep the kids safe on the course and run the various booths. There will be a volunteer sign-up sheet online and the link will be sent out soon.

All students will bike with their core class (grade) group for 30 minutes on a route through the Willow Wind paved parking areas. The course will be closed to cars. For younger or less experienced riders, training wheels are fine and a goal of fewer minutes is fine too.

Look for pledge sheets and information packets to be sent home with your student soon.

Get sponsors, ride with your class, complete your 30 minute heat, have FUN and support your school. Look forward to seeing you there!
