Lessons Learned Through the Lens: The EMS Photo Documentary ProjectDan Limmer, NREMT-P, Kennebunkport, ME
During the past 24 months, as I travel speaking at EMS conferences and riding EMS shifts in each city that I visit, I have been working on a photo documentary of EMS which will be published as a book. Throughout the country EMS agencies, providers, patients and the entire spectrum of emergency healthcare professionals have allowed me to document their stories in a collection of images. These images document clinical triumph and tragedy, compassion and comedy. In this photo driven presentation I share this experience with you providing both interpersonal and clinical insights that will both sharpen your skills and remind you of the quality of emergency care we passionately strive to provide.
Dan Limmer is an EMT-Paramedic who has been involved in EMS and Law Enforcement for more than 30 years and practices as a Paramedic with Kennebunk Fire Rescue in Kennebunk, Maine. He is a highly regarded author and regular presenter at EMS conferences nationwide. He is the co-author of Emergency Care, EMT Complete, Essentials of Emergency Care, Advanced Medical Life Support and First Responder – A Skills Approach. Dan is a veteran Paramedic originally from the Colonie, New York region and is a retired Detective with from the Colonie Police Department.
9:00am The Pediatric CodePeter M. Antevy, MD, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Hollywood, FL
This highly interactive multimedia presentation is geared towards EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses and Physicians who treat critical pediatric patients. The lecture is designed to cover some basics, but also delves into the deeper layers of pediatric resuscitation. Real life examples will be provided and will challenge the audience to think about how they would respond to the given scenario. A unique method to help health care professionals remember children’s weights and quickly determine the dosages of six critical resuscitation medications will be presented.
CEO and Founder of Pediatric Emergency Standards Inc. Dr. Antevy is a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Florida. He also serves as the EMS Medical Director of Davie Fire-Rescue,

12:45pm ThE JOhN PRYOR, MD MEMORIAL KEYNOTE
Dr. Pryor’s favorite quote, by Albert Schweitzer, hung in his office and captures the
essence of his character “…Seek always to do some good, somewhere. Every man has to seek in his
own way to realize his true worth. You must give some time to your fellow man. Even if it’s a little thing,
do something for those who need help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.
For remember, you don’t lie in a world all your own. Your brothers are here, too.”
how to Run a Pediatric Trauma Peter M. Antevy, MD
In this in depth review of pediatric trauma management, case studies will reveal how the trauma team can most effectively assess and treat the pediatric trauma patient. Medical aspects of care will be highlighted as well as discussion of communications styles and techniques that allow trauma teams to function more effectively.
1:45pm Developing a Resilient LifestyleDr. Francis L. Battisti
“He who loses wealth loses much; he who loses a friend loses more; but he who loses courage loses all.” —Cervantes
In these uncertain times emergency healthcare providers may find themselves facing unparalleled challenges, e.g. keeping positive as others have thrown in the towel—Maintaining the belief that individual efforts do impact results—Reacting to new and rapidly changing healthcare delivery systems and standards—and keeping clearly focused on the goal of “caring” for others.
The result of this uncertainty can be to inhibit creativity, to reinforce ridge thinking and to increase the stress that individuals experience. This presentation will help everyone to develop strategies for professional/personal life enhancement and move toward the positive “know-shun” and “knowing” what needs to be done and “shunning” de-powering approaches. This program is organized around the principal that resiliency is a skill set that can be developed and enhanced. The program will focus on the individual and maximizing personal, professional, and organizational performance. This program will specifically work with participants to develop strategies to reduce negative stress in their lives and increase productivity and satisfaction. Ingredients of a resilient lifestyle will be explored and demonstrated.
2:45pm Afternoon BreakThis will be your last chance to visit all of our exhibitors, sponsors and the massage therapists. Have a great time!
3:15pm Orthopedic Considerations in the PolyTrauma PatientAdam Bitterman, DO, Queens, NY
Musculoskeletal injuries are frequently encountered in patients sustaining polytrauma. Thorough prehospital and emergency department evaluation and appropriate management of the orthopedic patient is crucial for an optimal outcome. This lecture will provide the attendee with the fundamental knowledge base to handle situations ranging from long bone fractures to the orthopedic emergency. Physical examinations and pearls for splinting techniques will be addressed giving providers newfound confidence when handling orthopedic trauma.
Dr. Adam Bitterman graduated from Binghamton University in 2005, (NYS-EMT-B, Captain, Harpurs Ferry Student Volunteer Ambulance 2002-2005), from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010 and is currently completing his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Peninsula Hospital Orthopedic Consortium in Queens, NY. He is a Medical Correspondent on “The Doctor’s Channel Daily News Cast”
4:00pm Street Smart Skills – Staying Safe Dan Limmer, NREMT-P
This presentation will explore attitudes towards safety, address situational and tactical awareness and related skills, threats from violence, the drug trade and legal issues. Have you ever experienced a call or has a patient ever arrived in your emergency room where the patient was found with symptoms of substance abuse that you could not identify? Have you ever found yourself in a potentially dangerous situation and been very surprised? Have you ever treated a patient at a crime scene? Has part of that crime scene just arrived in your E.R.? This program will provide you with ways to handle these and other “street” related and emergency department situations. Dan will help you to be more effective, more focused and safer in your next emergency situation.
