STAY ALERT! THE DROWNING SEASON IS

UPON US!

How many times do we hear about a child drowning, often in a

water facility on their own. Perhaps you are fed up with reading

about me saying this but once again: UNTIL YOUR CHILD IS AS

GOOD IN WATER AS YOU ARE, ALWAYS ACCOMPANY THEM!

Below a great example of parenting, or in this case, it may be even

A 13-year-old boy is in a critical condition after nearly drowning in a

brook, prompting a police investigation. Emergency services were

called to Whit Brook, near Boarshaw Clough Way, Middleton at 20:07

BST on Sunday and rescued the boy from the water. He was resuscitat-

ed on the towpath before being taken to hospital. Police are

investigating how the boy, who was playing with friends, came to fall

into the water. Friends of a schoolboy who is fighting for his life in

hospital after almost drowning are praying for his speedy recovery.

The 13-year-old was playing with pals in and around the Rochdale

Canal on Sunday evening when he fell in. His young friends desperately

tried to help him and it is understood a member of the public dived

into the canal, in Middleton, to pull out the struggling boy.

Boy, 13, critical after rescue from brook

Allen says; Learning to swim is of paramount

importance and our gratitude must go to his

saved him. Below is advert from YSK

and much more!

Yan said, “Beware of open water! When you jump or fall into cold water and

yes, even at this time of year, water will be cold. Sudden immersion causes

us to involuntary gasp and inhale. If they are below the surface that would

mean inhaling cold water causing shock. In this situation do not attempt a

rescue unless you are competent in life saving. Remember both you and the

casualty may be clothed and this will make a rescue far more difficult.

Attempt to use clothing or a branch to help the casualty. Be aware that

Someone who looks as though they're having trouble, but isn't yelling for

help, may not have enough breath to call out.

Look for something with buoyant qualities, a football, a branch or similar,

Call for help, get someone to telephone the emergency services. “

A Birmingham swimming pool has been closed after scores of children fell ill with a Cryptosporidium, a chlorine

resistant oocyst that causes sickness and diarrhoea. Apparently the closure is the third time this month that the

pool at Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre in Kings Heath has been shut down. An announcement on the site’s

Facebook page said it was closed on May 12 due to “technical problems and was shut again on May 17 for

emergency cleaning after a child defecated in the pool. CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CAN KILL IMUNOCOMPROMISED

SUFFERERS The venue said it was closed most recently on Monday, May 23, after tests confirmed the presence

of cryptosporidium in the water. In research by Evans et al. (2001)indicated the average water intake per pool

user was 22ml. STOP DRINKING POOL WATER!

What causes this?

Allen says: Cryptosporidium and its big cousin Giardia are generally only introduced into a pool through a release

of liquid faecal matter. Because they are hard shelled basic life forms, the level of chlorine commonly maintained

in pools and spas is not effective against it. Our only defences against it is constant flocculation that will gather the

tiny particles together to enable them to be trapped in the filter media and the use of a UV system that will disrupt

its DNA and RNA preventing it from reproducing. The swimmer’s defence is to stop swallowing pool water as this is

how it is transmitted from pool water to bather.

A pools PSOP should advocate (and implement) pre-swim hygiene and toilets and showers should be clean, warm

and welcoming. There should be an emergency action plan for releases of Diarrhoea into a pool or spa and this

should involve the following:

Cryptosporidium closes Birmingham Swimming POOL

Wilson’s News from Studies In Work

Ensure a flocculent is being added

Close pools for six 'turnovers' periods, or 24 hrs. if you don’t know your turnover time

Remove bathers and strongly advocate they shower thoroughly

Advise them there is a chemical parameter that you are not satisfied with

Raise levels of free chlorine to 30 mg/l (ppm) for at least 240 mins (or 60 mg/l if using Bromine. This will give a contact

time of 7200 and this should be adequate to neutralise this hazard

Maintain pH in region of 7.2 to 7.3

Sweep pool bottom, sides especially around fittings, e.g. lights, steps, inlets and outlets to ensure there are no ’dead

spots regularly during closure period.

Backwash filters.

Filter for a further eight hours and then reopen

Reopen pool.

NOTE! DO NOT BACKWASH IMMEDIATELY AS YOU WILL INTRODUCE THE OOCYSTS INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE

FILTER AND THEN REINTRODUCE THEM BACK INTO THE POOL WHEN YOU GO BACK ‘ON LINE’

Identification of Crypto or Giardia is generally only by Faecal analysis.

Last but not least, ensure that your staff and management are adequately trained and competent.

Studies In Work can provide ISPE endorsed, certificated training in this subject

A myth about pools and spas appears to gain credibility over time and with constant re-telling . The myth is that there is a pool somewhere, that if you pee in it, a blue cloud will form around you. THIS IS NOT TRUE! What will happen however is that if the urine overpowers insufficient levels of chlorine, a heavy obnoxious gas will form above the surface of the water that is distressing to pool users. This gas is Nitrogen Trichloride; the gas given off by some tear gas products, not really what you expect when you pay four quid to go swimming. Lead bodies advocate use of toilets and showers before bathing, but sadly this happening is the exception rather than the norm. Bad design of facilities will limit the opportunity for pre-swim hygiene so we must rely on adequate levels of free chlorine at the appropriate pH: 72 to 7.4. Chlorine should be maintained at a minimum of 1.0mg/l (ppm) and 2.5 in hydrotherapy pools. If you are using stabilised chlorine a minimum of 2.0mg/l. Also keep your levels of Cyanuric acid below 50 mg/l. Above that, you will simply exchange chlorine’s effectiveness for it’s longevity. e.g IT WON’T WORK AS WELL!

STOP PEEING IN THE POOL!

Hi Allen,

I am in Bulgaria and wanted your expert second opinion. We need to install some grilles on the tornado bowl

gravity drains. Do these need to be less than 8mm as not under pumped action? The smallest grille is 9.50mm

here at moment. iI that ok?

Richard

Hi Richard There are two things to be considered in this type of situation. One is suction entrapment but as they are gravity units, not suction, there should not be a problem. Two is digit entrapment where inquisitive youngster put their toes or fingers into holes and in this way become entrapped. My advice: Replace the present ones with 8mm slotted covers. Allen

Wilson’s Essential Pool & Spa News Thank you Dave & Trinity School

Thanks again for the hospitality (and bacon sarnies) I

received on my recent visit to deliver revalidation

training. Their Plant room was greatand it would be, it

was a Hydrospec nstallation and the only downside

was I wish it was closer to Gloucester. See you in three

years. Also thanks to the delegates from Alderbrook

School, Balham, London for their great hospitality.

Just days after it reopened, the pool had been closed after sustaining damage in the winter storms resulting in a three million bill for refurbishment .The company which runs the pool, said a combination of sunshine and warmth had created an algal bloom. The bloom is caused by a rapid growth in millions of microscopic algae, brought about by sunlight and heat. In a statement the firm said the bloom was not harmful, but its presence meant lifeguards could not clearly see the bottom of the pool in all areas. Allen says: Chlorine is extremely effective at preventing algae from blooming. Once however it gets a grip, it be-comes difficult to eradicate. Many outdoor pools use stabilised chlorine to disinfect and cyanuric acid level can get out of control preventing chlorine efficiency. It would be interesting to know what disinfectant is in use there and what the Cyanuric acid levels are. I have a course in Cornwall in June and it would be nice to see some of the staff (and management ) there.

RISK ASSESSMENT IN SWIMMING POOLS

Under H&S law, risk assessments must be carried out and from these, operational procedures should

be written & implemented. Let Studies In Work take this burden off your shoulders by inspecting

your pool & plant and writing up your Risk Assessments, Normal Operating procedures (NOPs) and

Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and simplified chemical handling sheets. In recent years, Studies In

Work carried out the above with approximately sixty pools ranging from spa baths, school pools,

hydrotherapy and free form pools.

DELAPIDATION SURVEYS

Many pools and plant rooms have now reached the end of their working life and are due (or commonly

overdue) for refurbishment. Studies In Work will carry out an independent, unbiased survey on your

behalf and provide a written report of what needs replacing, what can be repaired, and estimate the

working life left in an item or process. They will also provide provisional costings for these works.

Studies In Work are able to write specifications and if required, supervise the installation in its

entirety.

Kelsey McClaine died last year shortly after celebrating her 24th birthday at a resort along the Colorado River.

Doctors originally believed Kelsey had developed bacterial meningitis after she lost the ability to speak and

move her head. They later discovered Kelsey was infected with a brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria

fowleri. The organism lives in slow-flowing rivers, untreated swimming pools and warm lakes and enters the

brain through a person's nasal cavity. For every one patient that will die of Naegleria, a thousand more people

will die of drowning," said Navaz Karanjia, medical director for UC San Diego's Neurocritical Care Program.

Allen says: “You cannot get a Naegleria fowleri infection from a properly cleaned, maintained, and disinfected

swimming pool. Reduce the chance of becoming infected by not submerging their heads while swimming in

freshwater sources”.

Notification of infectious diseases

(NOIDs)

Registered medical practitioners in England and Wales have a statutory duty to notify their local authority or local Health Protection Team of suspected cases of certain infectious diseases. All laboratories in England performing a primary diagnostic role must notify Public Health England (PHE) when they confirm a notifiable organism. PHE collects these notifications and publishes analyses of local and national trends every week.
