While I was raking-up the leaves in my yard, I noticed some areas of the lawn that are a
bit thin. While it is too late to get grass seed to sprout, there’s a trick I’ll use to make sure
these patches come up thick and lush next spring. It’s called “dormant seeding”. What
I’ll do is wait until it’s cold enough so that there’s no possibility that grass seed can sprout
and then overseed my thin areas with grass seed. I know it sounds crazy but the idea is
that the grass seed will lay out there all winter and sprout with the first warm weather in
spring. You might think that all that freezing weather would ruin the grass seed. Look at it
this way: grass seed produced naturally (if you didn’t mow your lawn) would fall from the
mother grass plant at the end of the growing season and lie dormant on the soil until spring.
When temperatures are warm enough, the seeds sprout. Since we mow our lawns (hopefully)
long before they have a chance to produce seeds we’ll have to purchase grass seed to spread
on the thin lawn. Freezing won’t hurt grass seed. Over winter, rain and snow will press
the seed into firm contact with the soil and soak the seeds so they’re “primed and ready”
when warm spring days return. It’s a neat trick and can save you the time and hassle of
dragging hoses around in spring trying to keep grass seed damp. I know of some “old timers”
who religiously over-seed their lawns right before the snow flies. It’s a neat trick...try it.
Even as they say farewell to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on
projects to make next year’s growing season even better than the one just passing. There
are bulbs to plant, perennials to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated. As the
season winds down, time can often be found to build new beds for planting next spring.
This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers discount shrubs and
perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during these fall sales don’t
look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy but, as long as the roots
and stems are in good shape, I’m willing to take a chance. Sometimes the bargains are so
good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that I can’t pass them
up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I come up with a
plan for them. I’m not afraid to winter-over perennials in pots or balled-in-burlap shrubs
or trees. It’s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh winter ahead.
First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from
the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great
spot. The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants.
I’ve got a 4’ high retaining wall on the west side of my vegetable garden that works well
for this purpose. Parallel to the wall, I’ll dig a trench deep enough to set my potted and
balled bargains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks above the wall,
I’ll tip it on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind.
Then, I’ll fill around the pots and balls with loose soil and tamp it in. Until winter sends
my treasures into complete dormancy, I’ll keep an eye out that they don’t dry out but, with
rain such a regular feature this time of year, that’s not of much concern. As early as I
can in spring, I’ll find places in my landscape for my fall bargains and plant them (adding
bone meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season
as much as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of
time this fall. Thanks for the read and have a spooky but safe Halloween.

Crowley
Jasper is a Boxer/Hound mix about 3 years old who weighs 40 pounds. He is a fun loving high energy dog! Jasper loves to run around and play with other dogs, go for car rides, and meet new people. Because of his
high energy it is best he is with older children. Jasper would do well with another dog and a fenced-in backyard. He would make a great addition to an active family. Jasper is neutered, up to date on his shots, and micro-
chipped. For more information, please contact us at 518-424-2878
Suzy is an 8-year old spayed female Poodle who is up to date on her shots and microchipped. She would do best in a calm, quiet home with no children. Suzy is housebroken and good with dogs. She is eligible for our Senior to

Marvin
Crowley is an absolutely gorgeous green eyed 1-year-old boy that was res-cued as a kitten from a woodpile and a life of fending for himself outdoors. Crowley is very affectionate and loves attention but has not been adopted
yet because he is a “scaredy-cat” ...waiting for a family patient enough to give him the time he needs to trust. He is great with his foster family and with many others that have taken the time to get to know him. Once
Crowley gets to know you he’s a really amazing guy that will be so grateful to have a forever home. Crowley is great with other cats and dogs. Are you willing to give this regal boy a chance? Crowley is neutered, up to date on
his shots and negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.
Marvin is an extremely laid back and easy going 5-year-young gentleman. Marvin loves to be involved in everything going on in the house and will fol-low his foster dad around to keep an eye on things. Marvin can be a bit inde-pendent but does come seeking attention when he needs a little love. Marvin likes to sleep in his special spot at the foot of the bed each night - not on top of you but not too far away either. If you decide to adopt this awesome guy please remember he will need time to get used to his new surroundings. Marvin currently lives with other cats and dogs where he gets along just
Oh and did we mention how incredibly soft his fur is — kitty silk! Marvin is neutered, up to date on his shots and negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

FREE CAR CARE GUIDE FOR MOTORISTS(NAPSI)-When it comes to keeping your car running smoothly, one of the most importantpieces of equipment may not be under the hood but in the glove compartment.
Free Auto GuideThat’s because that’s the place to put the totally redesigned “Car Care Guide” from thenonprofit Car Care Council. The 80-page guide uses easy-to-understand, everyday lan-guage rather than technical automotive jargon and covers the most common preventivemaintenance occasions and procedures that should be performed to keep cars safe, de-pendable and efficient. It also includes descriptions of major vehicle systems and parts, and a list of questions to ask about maintenance or repair procedures. A car care check-list reminds motorists what vehicle systems need to be maintained and when serviceshould be performed.
Twenty additional pages provide new information on finding an automotive repair shop, alternative fuels, understanding the warranty, vehicle telematics, and careers in the autocare industry, and include an expanded environmental awareness section.
Expert Advice“Because properly maintained vehicles perform more safely and dependably for driversand their families, the Car Care Council is committed to providing useful information andtools for motorists, like the newly updated, easy-to-follow ‘Car Care Guide,’ to help takethe mystery out of auto service and repair,” said Rich White, executive director, Car CareCouncil.
How To Get The InformationAvailable in English and Spanish, individual copies of the new guide can be ordered, free, from www.carcare.org/car-care-guide. For more information, visit www.carcare.orgor follow the Car Care Council on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

DID YOU KNOW?Many major auto manufacturers provide bumper-to-bumper factory warranties that expire once a car is threeyears old or exceeds 36,000 miles, and such milestonesare important figures for preowned vehicle shoppers toconsider before buying their next preowned vehicle. Whenbuying a car that's more than three years old or one thathas close to or more than 36,000 miles on its odometer, prospective buyers should ask for the vehicle's mainte-nance records before making a purchase. Since many ve-hicles need their first significant servicing somewherearound 40,000 miles, it's important for preowned vehiclebuyers to know what they're buying and just how soonthey might be on the hook for repairs after buying a vehi-cle. Buyers should avoid purchasing any vehicles withsuspect maintenance histories and may even be able tocite anticipated maintenance when negotiating the priceof the vehicle.
