In my last couple of columns, I’ve written about the legends and lore of the plants we share the holidays with (along with some winter driving adventures). While reading about holiday plants, I came across all kinds of interesting Christmas lore. Take Santa for instance.

ure that detracts from the “true” religious meaning of Christmas. While its true that Santa’s been used to sell everything from cola to cars, the evolution of Saint Nicholas to our modern Santa is a rich tale that reaches back to the early days of Christianity.

The earliest legend of St. Nicholas tells us that he was born into a wealthy family in Asia Minor around 200. Though wealthy, Nicholas’ family was well known for charitable kindness. An only child, Nicholas was devoted to the prayers and fasting that his religion demanded. Eventually Nicholas inherited his parents fortune as well as their love of giving.

One of the earliest accounts of Nicholas’ goodness revolves around the three young daughters of a local noble family. It seems that the family had fallen on hard times and their

las overheard their plan and resolved to solve the dilemma. He snuck through the village at night and dropped a bag of gold coins through an open window. He did this three nights in a row, providing each of the daughters with a dowry to replace those that had been lost. This episode led, eventually, to St. Nicholas becoming the patron saint of not only maidens but of pawnbrokers and bankers as well. Even today the symbol used to identify a pawnshop is three gold balls representing the three bags of gold that St. Nicholas delivered so many centuries ago.

By 1000, St. Nicholas was the best known saint throughout Europe and western Asia. He was established as one who performed miracles and delivered gifts in the dead of night. At this time, St. Nicholas was generally portrayed as a tall, thin man with a dark beard dressed in the red robes of a bishop. The anniversary of his death was widely celebrated. Create a gift wrapping areaNearly as much energy goes into wrapping gifts as purchasing them. Some people excel at wrap-ping gifts, while others do not enjoy the task at all. Part of the trouble with gift-wrapping is theroom and tools needed to wrap all of those holiday treasures. But a gift-wrap station in a cornerof the home that is seldom used can make wrapping presents any time of the year easier and moreenjoyable.

* Find a place to store gift wrap and the tools needed to wrap gifts. Many people find the back ofa closet door works perfectly.

* Install wire hanger racks so the gift wrap tubes can be stored vertically along the surface of thedoor.

* Install a folding shelf on a hinge, and use that shelf to do your wrapping. Fold the shelf upwhen it is not needed and secure it with a latch at the top.

* Hang hooks to store tape and scissors. Attach the scissors to the hook with a string so they won'tgo missing.

* A basket tucked nearby can house bows and ribbons so that they are easily stored until needed.

Having the wrapping station so accessible also allows you to take inventory of supplies and re-stock when necessary. GG13B657

Did you know?According to the American Bankers Association, many mer-chants view debit card purchases in the same light that they dopurchases made with cash or personal checks. That's an impor-tant distinction for holiday shoppers to consider before makingpurchases, as any items bought on their debit cards may onlybe worthy of store credit instead of a full refund should suchitems need to be returned. Shoppers buying gifts for friends andfamily members should understand that, even if they rememberto include gift receipts when wrapping gifts, those items mayonly be eligible for store credit if purchased with a debit card. When buying items with credit cards, consumers can withholdpayment if they are not satisfied with the product. No such op-tion exists when using debit cards. In addition to more restric-tive return policies, shoppers who use debit cards may incurdebit transaction fees, This means they are charged each timethey use their debit cards, or such fees may be triggered whenusers use their card too often. Debit card users can check theagreement signed when they opened their accounts to determineif they will be subjected to debit transaction fees. Holidaysshoppers whose purchases are subject to such fees may want toavoid using their debit cards during the holiday season.GG13B706

Chocolate Initials - A Dutch TraditionSCHUYLERVILLE - Chocolate Initials - A Dutch Tradition! In the 16th and 17th centuries, ac-cording to old Germanic traditions, letters made from pastry were presented to children at birthas a symbol of good fortune and this became a part of the St Nicholas legend in the 19th century.A bread dough letter was used to identify whose gifts were hidden in a shoe or under a sheet. Then the children had to find their initial in order to see what else St Nicholas had left for them. When the Dutch, famous as traders, brought home cocoa beans along with coffee, tea and spicesfrom exotic lands, their love affair with chocolate began. They learned to make some of the finestchocolate in the world. Soon, the St Nicholas’ letters were made from chocolate and the traditioncontinues to this day. The Dutch chocolate makers keep St Nicholas supplied with enough choco-late letters for every household in Holland – and even have plenty for us! The Dutch Tradition ofChocolate Initials continues! Just in time for Schuylerville’s St. Nicholas Day Celebration, Sat-urday, December 7th, 2013. Orders for Chocolate Letters are now being taken for delivery in thefirst week of December and throughout the Holiday Season. Chocolate Letters, in either Dark,Milk Chocolate, 3 x 4 inches in size, come individually packaged in a festive box.
