Winchester Weekly Report from Winchester Town Manager, Lisa Wong

PLANNING UPDATE The Town Planning and Town Engineering Departments have been instrumental in securing a $125K grant as part of MassDOT’s Shared Streets and Spaces Program. This is a new program ini1ated by the state in response to COVID-19 and is for downtown improvements to pedestrian/cycling/dining infrastructure that promote public health, safe mobility and renewed commerce.

The grant covers the purchase and installa1on of barriers and planters to separate outdoor dining spaces. As the grant is not a reimbursement grant and many businesses have already purchased barriers, the Town successfully lobbied MassDOT to shiV some funds from barriers to outdoor hea1ng elements so that restaurants can stay open for a liWle longer.

Another project that is part of this grant applica1on is the installa1on of a crosswalk

on Mount Vernon Street at the terminus of the Tri-Community Bikeway (see plan above). The “official” bikeway ends at Mount Vernon Street and then con1nues at

Waterfield Road. This project will help close that gap and allow for a direct crossing. The Select Board will consider this at their mee1ng on Monday, September 28th.

The Town will con1nue to look for ways to support businesses, including its request for the state to create a Phase 2 for the Microenterprise Grants.
