Interactive Investigations • Interactive versions of elected investigations for each title

accessed by any device (iPad, Chromebook, laptop, Droid tablet) • A real-time teacher moderated digital learning environment – teacher

can monitor each student’s progress • Students use Exploros app or website to guide flow of investigation

and respond to investigation questions • Unique interactions include

– Communal word clouds – Gated polls and questions – Photo and video responses – …and much more!

• Teachers access a powerful dashboard enabling them to get real-time information on student responses and progress.

CPO and STEM Model

• Create a teaching process using the engineering cycle

• Incorporate Next Generation standards and inquiry teaching methods (Engineering and Science)

• Provide a structured approach that is easy to follow • Provide all the teaching aids needed to follow through

the model • Make it REAL and make it student/teacher

FRIENDLY

ETS-ED- Engineering Design

• Defining and delimiting engineering problems-stating the problem clearly with constraints

• Designing solutions to engineering problems-generating a number of different solutions

• Optimizing the design solution-process of tradeoffs to improve solutions (may require going back and forth through engineering cycle)

Key questions

• What is energy and what forms does it take? • How do you generate electrical energy from

wind? • How do engineers design solutions to

problems?

Setting Up

• Set up your wind turbine and fan using the pictures on the next few slides as a guide

Doing the Experiment

• Choose your initial design from these variables: blade number and shape, blade angle, orientation and distance of the coil from the rotor

• The fan should be set to medium speed • Measure the output of your device in AC volts • Make changes to your wind turbine setup and try to

increase the energy output of your wind turbine • What is the highest energy output, in volts, your group

was able to obtain?

Discussion

• In your experiments with the Wind Turbine, which steps of the Engineering Cycle did you use?

• How might the “Research” step improve your design? • What were the criteria and constraints for your wind turbine

design? Criteria describe the function and performance of the product. Constraints are rules that limit the design of your product and include cost, availability of materials, and time.

• What is the purpose of brainstorming in the design process? Why is it important?

• Did you make any tradeoffs to your initial design? If so, explain. . A trade-off is a compromise that exchanges less important features for those that are more important.

Key STEM Practices •Asking questions and defining problems – How do we improve the efficiency of a wind turbine?

•Developing and using models – Build a model wind turbine to test its power output

•Planning and carrying out investigations – Identify and test variables that affect the power output of a wind turbine

•Communicating information – interpret and evaluate shared information

Page 20: Wind Turbine€¦ · wind turbine? •Developing and using models – Build a model wind turbine to test its power output •Planning and carrying out investigations – Identify

• Design a way to increase the energy output of your wind turbine

• Create your own data table to keep track of the changes you make and the energy output

• Refine your design and retest • Continue until you get the design that lights the bulb. Your

design may require several iterations before arriving at the best possible design

• Identify any tradeoffs you made in your design to optimize the power output

Test and Refine
