We iia9 et wed 70e Petealby Susan Marino, R.N.

There are many beings who come into your life, butevery now and then, one comes into your life and youare never the same. I knew that Missy was specialthe day I brought her home, but I had no idea howprofoundly she would affect my life.

Missy had come from a litter of six Lhasa Apsos, onewas cuter than the next. I couldn't decide whichpuppy to choose so Missy guided me. She separatedfrom the golden bundles of fur in my lap, ran to theother side of the room, and began tossing a stuffed toyin the air. Then she scampered back to where I wassitting on the floor and cocked her head from side toside. I reached out to stroke her head and sheteasingly ran off. It seemed that she was looking outfrom the corner of her eye to see if I were watching. Ofcourse, I couldn't take my eyes off her. She capti-vated my heart completely. I left the breeder's homefeeling as though I had been chosen.

From the very first moment, this wise enchanted beingentered the house as though she was home. Waggingher tail joyfully, Missy excitedly scurried from room toroom. Her excitement was contagious. My children, three year old Jen and one year old Kim, were de-lighted with their new puppy, who playfully jumped andlicked their faces. To this day I can clearly hear thegiggles of my children as they rolled on our front lawnreceiving a healthy dose of Missy's kisses. Jen andKim frequently entertained our family with their "OffBroadway" productions, Missy, dressed in her manycostumes always had the leading roll.

My daughter Heather was born the following year.Missy was totaly intrigued with her. WheneverHeather was sleeping in her cradle Missy would curlup nearby. It looked as though Missy was sleeping, but as soon as someone came near she would alertme with her bark. There was never a need for aplaypen for Heather, Missy was her guardian. I wouldplace the baby on the living room floor with her toys. Ifshe tried to leave the room, Missy would lift her by heroveralls and guide her back to the middle of the room.Missy watched over our home and our children like aguardian angel. She performed the same service whenmy children, Todd and Dantae, were born. Missy wasvigilant about caring for our family. No one came intoour home without getting permission. When theyapproached, Missy would warn me and seek myassurance.

Missy's outstanding nurturing abilities extended toother animals as well. One day our tomcat Mittens, came home from a cat fight, very defeated. His facewas bleeding and he was limping on his front paw,Missy licked his face ever so gently, tending to hiswounds and his hurt pride. She then curled herselfaround him and they both fell off to sleep. I went tobed that night knowing that Mittens was in good paws. When Missy was four years old, my husband and Idivorced. She just seemed to understand how difficultthis was for all of our family. When I would returnhome each day there seemed to be just a little extraenthusiasm in her welcome. Her company eased thevoid during the long lonely nights. Her innate ability tounderstand all that was going on around her showed inall that she did.

Missy aged with grace. When she was fourteen hervet was amazed with her youthfulness. Her sight andhearing were perfect. He was particularly impressedwith her teeth which he claimed were the teeth of afive-year-old.

The following year, I noticed a lump on one of hernipples. My worst fear was confirmed: it was cancer. There would be no surgery; she was too old.Over the next year, the tumor grew slowly. We beganto see signs of aging for the first time. Both herhearing and her sight were beginning to leave her.Missy's playtimes were still filled with enthusiasm, butnow they were always followed by a one hour nap.She began to lose a little weight. I bought her asheep-skin rug to make her more comfortable, and Ispent many hours holding her and talking to her.I was a practicing registered nurse. My dear friendAda had been diagnosed with cancer, and had beengiven only two weeks to live. I met with her at thehospital. We had long talks and three dys later Adamoved into our home.

Once again Missy's sensitivity to her surroundingswas reawakened. She had a job to do. She protectedand cared for Ada. With great vigilance and enthusi-asm she sat outside of Ada's bedroom twenty-fourhours a day, except for the brief moments when shewent outside or ate her dinner. Ada felt safe andprotected, and took great comfort in stroking Missy'shead. If anyone tried to enter Ada's room, Missywould growl warning. Ada just laughed.

Like a little sentry, Missy would not let a soulin until Ada gave her approval. Missy and Icared for my friend for six weeks until Adapassed. The morning that she died, for the firsttime since Ada came to our home, Missyfinally left her position at the doorway. I was soproud of Missy.

Missy's tumor began to grow and her physicalenergy slowed,, but her spirit was very muchalive. My children, family and friends began tosuggest that I have Missy euthanized. Hereyes told me that she was happy and contentand that she was not ready.More than two years passed and Missycontinued to be the official greeter at out frontdoor. Her tumor had grown to the size of a golfball, and she would sleep most of the day. Webegan to let her outside only with supervisionbecause she could no longer see or hear verywell. During the summer of 1990, we hadexchange students from France living with us.Missy was always happy to have company inour home. One very hot summer day, I wasironing in the den and Missy was curled upsound asleep on her sheep-skin in front of thefireplace. It was always so comforting just towatch her. I got a call from my daughterasking me to come and pick her up at the localpizzeria where she worked. I ran to change myclothes and proceeeded to go and get her. AsI pulled out of the driveway, my right tire wentup in the air and came down with a thud. I gotout of the car, thinking that I had run over oneof the kid's toys, but to my horror I had run overMissy. I held her crushed body in my armsand the tears began to fall. Every fiber in mybody ached and then became numb. Shecontinued to breathe. Minutes passed, but itseemed like hours. As I held her and prayed, she took her final breath. I found out later thatwhile I had been changing my clothes, Missyhad scratched at the front door to go out andone of the exchange students had let her out.

That night we had a little ceremony and Iwrapped Missy in her sheep-skin rug and laidher to rest. I placed her in an "Angel Garden",a place under an old oak tree in our yard.Missy had been with us for more than seven-teen years. I will hold her memory with me formy lifetime. She is an angel with four paws.

Historian Committee — Linda Crabill, newlyappointed Chair, reported in writing that she is inthe process of completing an inventory of thematerials sent to her by previous Historian, BeckyJohnson. Linda reported the discovery of narratedvideo tapes of some early Specialties. Shesuggested ALAC purchase these tapes for the costof $150 and then show them in the HospitalityRoom throughout the week of the nationalspecialty. A discussion was held on the matter.

Motion 98-1 Pat Keen moved and Ray Sledzikseconded that Pat will donate her personal copy ofthese Specialty tapes to be shown at the National. In the event that Pat cannot find her tapes, ALACwill proceed to purchase the tapes that Linda hasidentified.

Judges Education Committee — Don Hansonreported that the JEC committee held a JudgesSeminar on 2/14/98 at the DJAA in New York. The script used by the presenters has beensomewhat updated and improved and thepresentation went well. This committee also metprior to the board meeting with the BSC. The needfor better visuals continues to be a matter ofconcern and is being rectified. Don furtherreported that the JEC does have plans to schedulea "judges seminar" presentation to the membershipduring the week of the National Specialty. Threeresumes had been submitted to fill the vacant seatsof the JEC Committee. Those who submittedresumes were Ann Lanterman, Fran Strayer, andRobyn White-Lily.

Bev Drake questioned the Board's policyregarding review of a committee and its members.Larry Bruton stated that the Board will regularlyreview a committee's progress and that it is to be

done once a year at the Board Meeting inconjunction with the Annual Meeting in June. InJune 1997, both the JEC and BSC Chairs reportedthat their committees were working well.

The JEC will in the future designate onecommittee member to be responsible for each ofthe six regions in the country.

Measurement Certification Committee —Nancy Plunkett reported in writing that ten dogswere certified in 1997. The numbers were low dueto Nancy's absence from the National Specialty. Itis hoped that more measurers will becomequalified and more dogs will be certified in 1998.

ALAC BULLETIN: A discussion was held

regarding the Bulletin and how we might improve

it. Bud Brockway gave the following suggestionsfor increasing advertising activity in the Bulletin:

1. Actively solicit advertisers

2. Lower the advertising rate

At this time, there will be no change in advertisingrates — the Bulletin can not be allowed to lose largesums of money.

Concerns which have been expressed by membersregarding the Bulletin

1. Not receiving the Bulletin on time

2. Not getting photos back in a timely fashion

3. Not knowing when the deadlines are

Motion 98-2 Ray Sledzilc moved and Bev Drake

seconded that each Board member solicit five (5)

ALAC members to advertise in the Bulletin.

Motion passed unanimously.

Further discussion included a reminder of deadlinedates: 3/10/98 and 5/10/98. Judy O'Dell requestedthat the Bulletin's policy regarding the mailing ofissues to Lhasa judges be clarified with a statementin an upcoming issue. Bud Brockway suggestedthat we consider mailing a questionnaire toBreeder Judges and then to All breed/Lhasa Judgesasking them to state what they expect or arelooking for when they are judging. We would thenfeature one judge in each issue of the Bulletin. Adiscussion pointed out that the editors of theBulletin did not have the time to take on this addedresponsibility.

Motion 98-3 A motion was made by Pat KeenFernandes and seconded that Bud Brockway andJudy O'Dell develop such a questionnaire andsubmit it for consideration.
