April Fools Day, 1st April Unfortunately the origin of the custom of ‘making April Fools’ is uncertain. One theory is that April Fools’ Day was purely the result of its timing at the end of winter and the coming of spring. This time of renewal and rebirth was marked with fun and jollity, not dissimilar to the Roman festival of Hilaria in late March which was celebrated with the wearing of disguises, rejoicing and merrymaking. Certainly April Fool’s Day has all the characteristics of such a renewal festival, pushing the boundaries of everyday behaviour yet with the resultant disorder set within a strict time frame. For example, traditionally on April Fool’s Day all pranks are supposed to stop at 12 noon sharp, with anyone playing a joke after midday then considered the ‘April Fool’.

Egg-samples of Editorial Wit... What day does an Easter egg hate the most? Fry-days.

When do monkeys fall from the sky? During Ape-ril showers! Can February March? No, but April May! Why is everyone so tired on April 1st? Because they've just finished a long, 31 day March!

What season is it when you are on a trampoline? Spring-time!

What do you get if you pour hot water down a rabbit hole? A Hot Cross Bunny.

Why is the letter A like a flower? A bee (B) comes after it!

Wrawby WI Our next meeting is on Wednesday 18th April 2018 at 7.45 pm. Members of Wrawby WI are going to be entertained by a “Mystery Speaker” at the April meeting, which promises to be a very interesting evening. Non-members are warmly invited to attend any of the meetings, where a friendly welcome will await you!

Please phone Sue Baldwin on 01652 657569 for further details

Introducing Barnetby Silver Band At Barnetby Silver Band we are keen to develop partnerships within the community, be that local, county-wide, national or international. We have partnerships with a number of local organisations. Further afield, we have sup-ported the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance and currently we are supporting our two local hospices and Lake Victoria Band, a brass band serving impoverished children in Kisumu, Kenya.

The band can provide: ♦ Formal concerts – rewarding fund-raising events. ♦ Outdoor music for Spring/Summer events. ♦ Christmas Concerts – from quartet to full band depending on venue. ♦ Workshops and talks based on the science and history of brass banding. ♦ Teaching – free lessons and usually a free loan instrument to anyone, adult or child. who is interested in learning to play. All

teaching staff are DBS checked. We do normally ask for an engagement fee depending on the type of event though these are normally much less than the going rate for hiring a band. Further details can be had from our Band Secretary: 07742 499457 or from the Musical Director: 01652 327448/07804 909356 (Text or call), email [email protected]

LIVE THEATRE REPORT On Friday 23rd February the Library Theatre Touring Company returned to the Village Hall with a production of two “Talking Heads” by Alan Bennett. The two short pieces were called “A Lady of Letters” and “Bed Among The Lentils” and they went down very well with the full house! The two very different but equally amusing pieces were brilliantly delivered by Debbie Kelly – how she remembered all the words is another thing! Refreshments were served in the interval and the raffle was drawn. A profit of £560 was made for the village hall - many thanks to all those who came along on the night. Look out for another visit from the Theatre in the future.

WINDMILL QUIZ NIGHT REPORT On 9th March the Wrawby Windmill Society

organised a Lincolnshire Life Quiz night at the

village hall. It was a fantastic evening attended

by about 90 people who

enjoyed having their brains

tested by some of the very

interesting questions!

At half time there was a

delicious supper of pie and

peas followed by some

cheese straws, ginger cake and scones which

had been made using recipes from a new

smaller version of the original Wrawby WI recipe

book. The booklet, put together by one of the

committee, will be on sale at the mill, or from any

committee member at other times, at the bargain

price of £2!

Due to the support & generosity of villagers &

those who came from further away, a profit of

£570 was made and this will cover the cost of a

new sign board at the entrance to the mill and

also banners advertising the mill which will be

put up at different places in the village on open

days. So THANK YOU for making this possible.

The committee look forward to seeing lots of

visitors at our first open day which is Easter

Monday April 2nd and the mill will be open from

1pm – 5pm. FREE Admission!

Village Hall Following successful fund raising the village hall committee are pleased to report that all the chairs in the hall have now been cleaned and the floor is to be cleaned and re-sealed towards the end of May.

Introducing Brigg Bowling Club Brigg Bowling Club is looking for new members to join their ranks; both experienced players and new starters will be made very welcome at our Club which is situated in a very pleasant, secluded spot along Dudley Road in Brigg. New starters will be particularly welcome to come along and try the game. You will be offered a free trial period and given tuition on how to play the game. All you need to begin with is flat-soled footwear, and we can provide the bowls for you to have a go with. If you might be interested please come along with your partners, friends or by yourself and we will arrange for someone to meet you and show you the basics of the game.

The club's long history shows it was founded way back in 1912. In 1967 the green at Dudley Road was made square and a new pavilion erected. This is still in use today but with much enhanced facilities. The Clubhouse is where we meet before and after games, where we can enioy a good natter along with tea and biscuits! We have teams for experienced bowlers and beginners. Your coaches will advise you when they feel you are ready to play in a team, but in the meantime you are welcome to play on a casual / social basis until you feel more confident. The bowling season extends from late April through to mid-September, with the majority of league games being played in the evenings. During the season we host a number of Open Competition dates when players from all around the area come along to take part. In June this year we shall be playing host to a touring team from Northumberland, as well as games against the Lincolnshire Vice-Presidents Association. Our Clubhouse is available for use by groups within the local community; these currently include whist drives and art groups. If you are interested and wish to have a go, please contact the Club President Roy Tuplin on 01724 762799 or the secretary Brian Clark on 01652 654332. We look forward to hearing from you.

For Christians the feast of Easter is the most important date in the year. It marks the day when Jesus Christ rose from the dead; it is a day of celebration and joy after what had been a traumatic week in Jesus’ life. That week had begun with a triumphant entry into Jerusalem with crowds shouting Hosanna and strewing his path with palm branches. As the week progressed it became apparent that leaders of the Jewish faith had become hostile towards him and what he was teaching, culminating in Jesus being arrested. Taken before the Roman authorities he was condemned to death by crucifixion on a cross on what has become known as Good Friday. Following his death his body was sealed in a tomb, but when his supporters came to minister to his body on the Sunday he could not be found for he had in fact risen from the dead. Appearing to them later imagine the joy and astonishment that those first disciples experienced; from utter despair and devastation to total exhilaration and awestruck worship. Many people ask me why does the date we celebrate Easter change from year to year? It is a result of complex historical situations, but I will try and simplify it somewhat. The first problem was that those first disciples did not actually record the exact date of the resurrection of Jesus; they expected Jesus to return again soon so any anniversary date was unimportant. The next problem was one of calendars; there were two in use in the Bible lands around the time of Jesus’ death around 30AD. The lunar calendar (based on the movement of the moon) which was used by Jewish scholars as it had been for over 2000 years of Jewish

history and the Julian or solar-based calendar used by the Roman Empire. The lunar year comprised 354.36 days and the Julian year had 365.25 days with a leap year every 4 years. When the Christian faithful wanted to celebrate important anniversaries, they needed to come to a solution on determining a date when they could celebrate their most important date; there were so many differences between them. As usual when you have different factions there was a need to come to some compromise. The lunar and solar calendars had both to be used, so the decision was that Easter would fall on the first Sunday following the first full moon following the spring equinox. This explains the 35-day span when Easter can occur (March 22 – April 25). Incidentally the Julian calendar was later amended by Pope Gregory XIII to form the Gregorian calendar. Why do we call it Easter, one answer is that it relates to the old Germanic Eosturmonath which means “the month of opening” comparable to the meaning of “April” in Latin related to spring, the season when the buds open. It essentially reflects its general date in the years calendar. However, the date and the name are really immaterial. What is important is the remembrance of Christ’s death and resurrection, the conquering of sin, death, and Satan that gives us the right to wish everyone “ Happy Easter”
