a volunteeR’s ReFleCtion

Gateway Recreation Centre has had so many opportunities for my family to be involved in throughout the years, including but not limited to, my daughter’s sports and special events.

My daughter Monessa started playing soccer with Gateway CC when she was just five years old. in 2015, she just finished her last outdoor season with many of the same faces that started with Gateway CC way back when. What a privilege to see the girls that started out by picking flowers and doing cartwheels on the field develop into skilled players that won several City Championships throughout the years. Team spirit always ran high with this team. now that they are 18 years old, some are still continuing on to adult soccer. Our family has come away with some great friendships that have been formed over the years at Gateway.

i started off being a bench mom for years and then eventually i was encouraged to coach. i have also had the opportunity to volunteer as the Soccer Equipment Manager, as well as Convenor. The girls soccer team has always volunteered throughout the years with the special events, including but not limited to, the summer and winter carnivals. What great experiences and wonderful memories they have been able to gain by volunteering at their home club.

i would encourage other families with the kids in any Gateway CC sports to volunteer- the rewards to the children and parents are plenty. The club is always in need of volunteers and your help will be appreciated.

i am still volunteering at Gateway, now as a Board Member. now that Monessa is grown, she works part time in the canteen. i would encourage you to check out the canteen next time you are at the club - it has many food options from a hot breakfast to late suppers. in my opinion, they also have the best fries & chicken fingers with honey dill sauce!

When you go online to register for your spring sports, please check off the box that says you would like to volunteer. i look forward to

meeting some new faces and know you will enjoy getting involved in our great centre!

The Softball program in our area is overseen by the north East Softball Association (nESA). Please check out our website at www.Northeastsoftball.com. Volunteers are always welcome!

There were approximately 175 girls from north East Winnipeg registered for Softball last season.

For girls 8 and under, there is a Learn to Play program, and the girls are eligible to play either T-Ball or Penny Ball. T-Ball is designed for girls 6 and under and the program is based on a one hour session using a prepared lesson plan. Penny Ball is a program for girls ages 7 and 8 and the program consists of thirty minutes of a prepared lesson plan, followed by a forty five minute modified game.

Girls age 9 and older are placed on teams hosted by various community clubs in the north East area and the teams will play two games per week from early May until late June or early July (depending on the age of the player). Evaluations of the registered players will be held in late March or early April to allow the placement of the players on an appropriate team.

nESA is currently offering skills camps and pitching camps for all ages, running from January to mid-April. Please refer to the nESA website for more details about the individual camps available, costs and registration information.

For the 2016 season, Gateway is planning on hosting a U10 team, and a Learn to Play team.

At the end of March the U16A and the AA teams head to the Westerns in BC if the teams finish in the top 2.

Try outs for AA teams will take place in April and will be formed then.

Once the regular season is over you can still enjoy ringette by joining a 3 on 3 spring team running out of various arenas. Make sure to check the RERA, MRA or nRL or arena websites for spring teams, camps or tryout dates for the next following season.

if your daughter is ready to be away from home this summer, Winkler ringette camp is a lot of fun! The camp runs at the end of August.

Make sure to sign up for any ringette camps once posted as they fill up fast. Make sure to look for the “Come try Ringette” in the nK area at the end of July, early August.

Registration for the 2016/2017 will begin mid-August.

This is a good way to introduce ringette to all ages.

CRaFt and vendoR sale

2014 saw the first craft and vendor sale at Gateway in many years. The second one was held in november of 2015 and was hugely successful. We were able to donate 140 pounds of food to Winnipeg Harvest. Keep your eyes open for the upcoming “Bring the Spring” sale.

We are hoping to get a farmers market up and running this summer to help bring more amazing homemade and local products to the area. The goal for the farmers market is 100% homemade/grown/baked items.

if you or someone you know is interested in selling some of their items, have them email Melissa at [email protected] and mention the farmers market.
