WHAT IS SAR’S GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SINCE ITS FOUNDING?

Our core values have remained the same since the school’s inception. Student-centered education, love for Yiddishkeit and Medinat Yisrael, and exceptional staff and lay leadership are equally the same today as they were in 1969.

“IT’S NOT JUST WHAT YOU LEARN. IT’S WHO YOU BECOME.” WHO HAS SAR BECOME SINCE ITS FOUNDING?

SAR has become an internationally recognized Modern Orthodox yeshiva, where creativity, cultivation, compassion, and community thrive. Our faculty demonstrate deep commitment and loyalty as they care for and teach children. We are blessed to have the most humble lay leadership who ‘do the right thing.’ Kol HaKavod to our brilliant community. You honor us.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE ABOUT EDUCATING CHILDREN?

I know for sure that each child is an individual who possesses a divine spark within. Our role is to work with students to identify and nurture those passions and qualities. We need to see the tzelem Elokim in each child, and teach him or her to see that in others.

Learning happens ‘between the walls,’ not exclusively in the classroom. We are committed to investing in co-curricular and chesed activities, celebrating smachot and recognizing world events, intergenerational learning, and outside partnerships and expertise.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE GIFT OF AN SAR EDUCATION?

I feel incredibly blessed knowing that SAR graduates will enter both the broader Jewish and secular words with the gifts of skills and outlook that have been instilled in our children for the last 50 years. As we build SAR’s foundation for the next 50 years, we move forward with a reinvigorated commitment to these gifts.

HOW HAVE YOU GROWN PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY SINCE JOINING SAR?

I stand on the shoulders of giants – our founders, past principals, and former teachers. I try everyday to ensure the values on which they built SAR are the values we can perpetuate for the next 50 years. Faculty, parents, and students have taught me to proactively seek challenges and to create opportunities for growth. I have tremendous hakarat hatov for these role models who continue to inspire me.

WHAT IS SAR’S GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SINCE ITS FOUNDING?

Since its inception, SAR has championed an engaged, vibrant, halakhic Jewish life—confident and courageous; and it has championed a learning environment where students are trusted and respected, given the space to take risks and to think and to dream. It is a place where students have a voice, where they feel safe to express themselves and discover their passions and interests.

“IT’S NOT JUST WHAT YOU LEARN. IT’S WHO YOU BECOME.” WHO HAS SAR BECOME SINCE ITS FOUNDING?

SAR has become a flagship institution of Jewish education. For faculty, it has become a place which welcomes creativity and change, risk taking and an entrepreneurial spirit. SAR is a thinking and caring institution where teaching is a dynamic experience. For students, it is a place of creativity and warmth, self discovery and spiritual growth.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE ABOUT EDUCATING CHILDREN?

Patience is crucial, and impatience is anathema, to the educational enterprise. Every child is a world; every child is unique; and every child needs time and space, love and guidance, in order to become the best version of him- or herself. Schools are not factories; they are spaces of love, creativity and inspiration; spaces that establish the frame within which our children can learn to take ownership over their growth and development, on a path to becoming b’nai and b’not Torah.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE GIFT OF AN SAR EDUCATION?

The gift of an SAR education: the opportunity to discover your strengths, establish a personal connection, a love for a life infused with Torah and halakha, a love for Medinat Yisrael and a concern for all people—Jew and non Jew. At SAR, our students learn to take responsibility for their community and society.

HOW HAVE YOU GROWN PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY SINCE JOINING SAR?

I have spent the overwhelming portion of my adult life at SAR. I have grown in every way possible—as a teacher, as a parent, as a learner, as a leader. I have been blessed to be surrounded by lay leaders, colleagues and educators who have displayed courage, vision, love, passion, integrity, generosity, and commitment. In my now 25 years at SAR, I have been privileged to learn from the best. I felt it on my first day on the job a long time ago—and it continues to this day!

OPEN LEARNINGAdvisory groups in Grades 7-8 were paired for the year with a class in Grades K-6 for cross-grade learning on a theme to help improve the world. Together, they completed three chesed projects, e.g. comforting the sick, combating hunger, supporting soldiers, and protecting our environment.

#BEE4MIDDOTProgramming included faculty modeling Tikkun HaMiddot behaviors; a video series to parents and faculty; Shabbatonim focused on students’ online personas, personal interactions, and choices made as Modern Orthodox Jews; and Mac-A-Bee teams representing Rav Salanter’s middot: Anava (freshman), Kavod (sophomores), Menucha (juniors), and Emet (seniors).

The Middah Moments campaign was the theme highlight. Students and teachers submitted middah moments, times when they saw students exhibiting exemplary middot. These examples became a focal point in Rabbi Harcsztark’s weekly pre-Shabbat announcements as students looked forward to learning who would be recognized for the “Middah Moment of the Week.”

#BEE4CHESEDThe year culminated with Grades 2N-8 participating in the SAR Olam Chesed Yibaneh Color Run on the Academy field. 900+ students raised more than $20,000 for 12 non-profit organizations serving the local Jewish community. organizations (e.g. Tomchei Shabbos, Habayit Shel Benji, Belev Echad, DOROT, and Van Cortlandt Park). Representatives of each attended, and cheered on the color powdered runners.

תיקון המידותTikkun HaMiddot

THE WORLD IS BUILT WITH LOVING KINDNESS CHARACTER REFINEMENT

Guided by this verse in Tehillim, older students learned and then taught younger children about chesed, inclusivity, and caring for others to bring the annual theme to life. The entire student body united to take action, performing acts of chesed to create a better world.

The annual theme of Tikkun HaMiddot focused on students developing their religious and moral personalities through self-awareness and attention to traits of ענוה (humility) and חריצות (diligence). Students concentrated on their own middot and concrete approaches to personal character refinement.

Chesed for HarveyThe Academy and High School put “Olam Chesed Yibaneh” into action following the devastation caused by Houston’s Hurricane Harvey. ELC through Grade 8 students created and sold Rosh Hashanah packages to local families, raising $7,500 to donate to Houston’s Jewish community.

SAR Privileged to Host Ehud Barak, Naftali Bennett

Rabbi Harcsztark was feted in November at the 2017 Covenant Foundation Awards Dinner in Los Angeles, honoring outstanding and innovative Jewish educators. Several current and former administrators traveled to L.A. in his honor, along with SAR Board President, Jack and Dr. Giti Bendheim. Upon return, he was showered with cheers from students gathered around the atrium on every floor and an exuberant chagigah.

In May, SAR High School students had the remarkable honor to greet Ehud Barak, former Prime Minister of the State of Israel. To prepare, classes studied Barak’s biography, and the background of political events marking his life in politics, including the Oslo Accords and the Camp David Summit.

In a schoolwide program, Barak engaged in conversation with Rabbi Harcsztark, followed by student questions. He described dramatic experiences as an officer in Sayeret Matkal, the IDF’s elite commando unit, and discussed recent Israeli political and security developments. Faculty later participated in an intimate Q&A session. Every student and staff member received a copy of Ehud Barak’s new memoir, My Country, My Life.

Thank you to Giti and Jack Bendheim for presenting SAR with this unique opportunity.

In April, SAR Academy welcomed Naftali Bennett, Israel’s Minister of Education and Minister of Diaspora Affairs, and former Minister of Economy and Minister of Religious Services. Mr. Bennett explained his position’s responsibility for taking care of Jews worldwide, and protecting Medinat Yisrael.

ELC children waved degalim and sang Eretz Yisrael Sheli as he arrived. Rabbi Krauss then led a school wide program on the steps. Shay Lerrer, Grade 4, and Eliora Gissinger, Grade 6, welcomed Bennett, after which students making aliyah in Summer 2018 as well as Israeli families returning to Medinat Yisrael were individually recognized. Mr. Bennett later spoke with Grade 8 and HS students, and met with 70 community leaders and faculty members.

Many thanks to SAR parents Dana (AC ‘92) and Marc Jason for arranging for Mr. Bennett’s visit.

“ ...we will never forget the chesed exhibited by the SAR community. Truly, I am choked up even now thinking about the care you have shown us.”

Warmly and gratefully, Paul Oberman Head of School, Robert M. Beren Academy, Houston, Texas

ELC Expands Powerful

Ivrit Curriculum Nurturing curiosity, sensitivity, and knowledge, ELC expanded Ivrit immersion from 4N to Kindergarten. The ELC will send 4N and Kindergarten students enveloped in Ivrit immersion into Grade 1. Additionally:

• Faculty expanded to a co-teaching model in every 4N and K class with one English speaking teacher, and one native Hebrew speaking teacher conversing exclusively in Ivrit.

• ELC increased the number of activities conducted exclusively in Ivrit, particularly for chagim.

Under the direction of Hen Lerrer, a new faculty member from Israel, and Erica Edelman, kin-dergartners created a multi-year partnership with ‘sister school’ Gan Sar (no relation!) in Tel Aviv. During the spring semester children “met” via Skype, with all communication in Hebrew, enabling real time practice.

Kol HaKavod to SAR’s very own Academy Award-winning stars, who partnered with the JDC to spread an important and meaningful message.

ELC transformed the SAR field into the streets of Shushan in preparation for Purim.

Mazal tov to the Grade 7 Boys’ Basketball Team for winning the championship for the second year in a row. We also gave a ‘high five’ to the Grade 6 Boys’ Basketball Team with a championship parade around the school.

Tamar Katz, Henna Krauss, Judah Lopatin, Liam Lewis, Avital Feintuch, Moshe Sarna, Abie Perelis, Yonatan Feintuch, and Efrat Feintuch competed in the national Chidon HaTanakh finals in April, along with finalists from around the U.S.

Tamar, Judah, Liam, Moshe, and Abie traveled on a special trip to Israel organized by SAR to experience Chidon HaTanakh in Israel and attend the international competition on Yom HaAtzmaut. Thank you to Shimona and Ari Katz for providing team shirts.

Grade 8 began a year-long partnership with Atmosphere Academy, a NYC public charter school. Together, students learned about diversity through chesed projects, weekly topical discussions, basketball games, and sharing both Sukkot and MLK Day programs.

March brought on the Madness as Grades 7-8 advisories competed on Jewish and Israeli knowledge. Brackets were posted; and placement, competition, and championship rounds fueled excitement.

16 Middle School students entered ExploraVision, the world’s largest K-12 STEM scholarship competition, challenging students to imagine future technology that can solve global issues.

Weeks of conversations in Life Values and Advisory culminated in Middle School students and faculty signing the SAR Academy Power of Words Day Pledge. The Pledge was then adapted for the entire student body.

The Parents’ Association brought recording artists Mordechai Shapiro to SAR for Purim concerts, and Benny Friedman to celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut.

was celebrated יום השפה העבריתto honor Eliezer Ben Yehuda’s 160th birthday, the father of modern Hebrew. In the Middle School, each grade participated in a tekes about the power of Ivrit, completely in עברית. Spelling bees and a Chidon contest on Israel rounded out the program, as every grade spoke exclusively in Ivrit for the day.

To celebrate Israel@70, the Academy produced the Israel@70 “Music Through the Decades” video. Each grade performed a song reflective of one decade of Medinat Yisrael’s existence. On Yom HaAtzmaut, everyone sang Hatikvah on the field, creating the formation of an Israeli flag, which concluded the video.

SAR’S STEM Programming SoarsSAR’s intensive investment in STEM multiplied dramatically. The school is committed to Next Generation Science Standards, teaching students to act like scientists and engineers. STEM programming expanded to include Grades 4-5 as well as Middle School this year.

The robust curricula included hands-on and interactive learning, enrichment, intergenerational learning, competitions and summer camp.

• Grade 3 added a STEAM rotation, creating a “Chesed Machine” based on physics principles.

• Voice and Choice added 3-D Design for Grades 4-5.

High School Highlights

An Impactful Year for Machon SiachMachon Siach at SAR High School is a research institute committed to developing teachers as public intellectuals and thought leaders on matters of Jewish education, curriculum, and culture that are central to the Modern Orthodox community.

This year, Machon Siach experienced tre-mendous growth and development. While the faculty cohorts continued research and writing to impact curriculum and learning ap-proaches, the Institute added classes for 24 dedicated parent learners, meeting monthly with Dr. Tammy Jacobowitz and Shuli Taubes, focusing on Bible and Jewish History.

Other new programs included Siach Talks (presentations modeled on the TED talk format), a spring convening on Bridging Theory and Practice, and an Educators’ Retreat to address issues of teen substance use in the Yeshiva League. Machon Siach also launched a website at www.machonsiach.org.

Investing in Our BEE-Involved Financial

Faculty Parents ReportingTo The SAR Community,

I have heard it said that one of the unique qualities of SAR, that sets it apart from other schools, is that SAR delivers a value based education. I agree—we are indeed a value based school and among our core values is the giving to, and taking care of, the collective community so that an excellent Yeshiva education is available to all our families. It is an obligation we bear as members of the Jewish community.

I am thankful that so many in our community feel the same way and are committed to our mission and steadfastly support us with their tzedakah. Our kehilah is extraordinary—we share a deep sense of obligation to care for the members of our community when in need or come together to share in celebrations.

This year, 1100 donors gifted $4.2 million to our operating budget. These gifts helped fund the SAR tuition assistance program and enabled many memorable programs to occur. Through the generosity of the community, over 1450 students experienced the values, spirit, and learning that take place at SAR everyday.

Additionally, this year we began to fundraise for our capital and endowment campaign: SpectAculaR Futures. We are well on our way to success and these next 12 months will be important in completing the campaign and building up our endowment so that we when we pass the reins to the next generation, we have buildings that provide for the needs of our students and we have an endowment that will alleviate pressure from other income streams, tuition in particular.

There is no greater investment than the one we make in our children. It is a lifelong gift that is certain to pay dividends to each family and to the Jewish people.

Investing in SAR faculty has always been one of our core values. Academy training and development focused on: advancing Ivrit immersion to the next level; doubling the number of faculty trained to facilitate Critical Friends’ Groups (professional learning communities); enhancing comprehension and critical thinking skills. Grades 1-5 faculty completed the fifth year of Math in Focus, the Singapore math curriculum.

Faculty-wide training at the High School was led by Shira Schiowitz and Dr. Gillian Steinberg. Professional development built on work from last year, when faculty collaborated on rethinking and rewriting our Investment in Learning criteria. Goals are for students to grow in six areas: initiative, respect, self-reflection, attentiveness, preparation, and punctuality.

S INDICATES SPONSORSHIP G INDICATES GIVING CIRCLE

This year we quietly began the $10M capital and endowment campaign to fund major expansion projects at both the Academy and High School campuses. We are making good progress with our financial goals and 2018-2019 will be an important year for successfully completing the campaign. Construction is underway and will be in process during the 2018-2019 school year which marks SAR’s 50th Anniversary. These campus improvements will not only benefit current students but students for decades into the future. We invite your partnership in this important project. Learn more at sar50celebration.org/campaign or contact Heidi Greenbaum, [email protected]

Thank you for educating our children with such amazing dedication and integrity. I can’t imagine any other school focused on doing the right thing as effectively and consistently as SAR. And, it is done with such simcha… It’s my personal belief that there is nothing Hashem finds more worthy and important than empathy, and your school is bursting with it. Meichayil el chayil.
