About the Unisphere Initialization Utility

For Fibre Channel systems, use the Unisphere™ Initialization Utility to discover systemsand set network parameters (IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway). In addition, for iSCSI systems with iSCSI data ports attached to Windows servers, use the utility to setnetwork parameters for these ports.

You can install the initialization utility on a server or other host such as a Unispheremanagement station. The only requirement is that the host be connected to the same networksubnet as the system management ports.

About the Navisphere Secure CLI

The CLI complements or is an alternative toUnisphere. It provides a command line interfacefor systemmanagement, including storage provisioning, status and configuration informationretrieval, and control. You can use the CLI to automatemanagement functions through shellscripts and batch files. For more information, refer to the EMC VNX Command Line InterfaceReference for Block (P/N 300-011-815).

About the Unisphere Host Agent

The host agent registers the server’s host bus adapter (HBA)with the attached systemwhenthe host agent service starts. This action sends the initiator records for each HBAs to thesystem. Initiator records are used to control access to system data.

The agent can then retrieve information from the system automatically at startup or whenrequested by Unisphere or the CLI.

Page 7: Windows Unisphere Server Software Install

The host agent can also:

◆ Send operating system drive mapping information to the attached VNX.◆ Monitor system events and notify personnel by e-mail, page, or modem when any

designated event occurs.◆ Retrieve LUN world wide name (WWN) and capacity information from Symmetrix®

storage systems.

About the Unisphere Server Utility

The server utility allows you to perform the following functions:

◆ Update server information to the systemLets you send the server name and IP address to the system and, if neededlater on, allows you to update or view this data. If theRegistration Servicefeature remains enabled after the installation of the server utility, theutility automatically registers the server’s HBAs with the system andupdates server information whenever the configuration changes (forexample, when you mount new volumes or create new partitions).

◆ Verify server high availability (HA)Lets you determine if the server is configured for high availability (HA)by verifying that the server has at least one connection path to each systemSP, and that PowerPath® or some other failover software, such as VMwarenative failover, DMP, PV Links, or HP native failover for 11iV3 is running. The utility does not detect any other native failover software, such as SunStorEdge Traffic Manager or Linux native multipath (MPIO).

◆ Use the snapshot feature (Navisphere Express only)On systems with Navisphere Express, you can start and stop a snapshoton the source server (server assigned to the source virtual disk or sourceLUN), or you can allow or remove access to the snapshot by the secondaryserver (server assigned to the snapshot).

About the Admhost Utility

TheAdmhost Utility is an executable program that you can run interactively orwith a script.

It runs only onWindows operating systems, andworkswith replication software applications(for example, SAN Copy™, SnapView™ and MirrorView™/A devices), and non-replicationsoftware devices.

Running the Unisphere Initialization Utility

You can start the initialization utility from the server onwhich it is installed. The initializationutility has threemethods for executing commands—auser interface (UI) version, a commandline interface that can be scripted, or a text-based utility that cannot be scripted. Beforecontinuing, make sure that the system is powered up completely.

Note: For system initialization, connect the server from which you are running the utility and thesystem to the same network subnet. Once you have assigned an IP address to the system, the serverand system can be on different subnets.

Starting the initialization utility UI on a Windows server or a Windows virtualmachine

To start the initialization utility, select Start ➤ All Programs ➤ EMC ➤ Unisphere ➤ UnisphereStorage System Initialization.

Using the UI version of the initialization utility on a Windows host or aWindows virtual machine

After you start the utility, it automatically scans the subnet for supported systems. Whenthis system discovery operation is complete, the utility lists, by hardware product ID/serialnumber, all uninitialized and initialized systems it found. The hardware product ID/serialnumber is on a hanging tag at the rear of the system.

If the discovery operation did not find the system you are installing, verify that the system’smanagement ports are properly cabled to the LAN on which the host resides. Themanagement ports and the host must both reside on the same physical subnet.

Proceed through the wizard screens, providing information where required. For moreinformation about completing the wizard, click Help in the wizard’s menu bar.

If you entered an SP IP address for the first time or changed an SP IP address, the utilityreboots the system, and the SP fault light on the back of each SP starts blinking. The reboottakes several minutes to complete. When it has completed, the SP fault light (LED) on eachSP stops blinking and remains off.

Starting the text-based or command line initialization utility on a Windowsserver or a Windows virtual machine

◆ To start the text-based version, at a command prompt enter cd C:\ProgramFiles\EMC\InitTool or cd C:\Program Files (x86)\EMC\InitTool; then enterInitToolCLI.exe.

Silent installations and removals using the InstallAnywhere package

A silent installation and removal uses a command line interface to install or removeapplications on all attached Windows servers.

To perform the installation or removal, you need to create a response file on one of theattached servers. A response file stores the setup configuration, which allows you to installor remove the applications on all remaining attached Windows servers by using onecommand that requires no user input.

The following Unisphere products support silent installations and removals:

◆ Initialization utility◆ Host agent◆ Server utility◆ Navisphere CLI◆ Admsnap for Windows Server 2008◆ Admhost for Windows Server 2008

Preparing for a silent installation

Before you begin the silent installation process, you must determine if you are performingan upgrade, a new installation, which is also referred to as a fresh installation, or both.

◆ New installationYou can install the software in the default location or can specify analternate location in the software_name.properties file.

◆ Upgrade

You can install the software only in the location of the previously installedsoftware. If you specify an alternate location in thesoftware_name.properties file the installer process will overridethe alternate location you specified and install the software in the samelocation as the previously installed software.

◆ New installation and upgrade

If you are performing a new installation and an upgrade in the sameenvironment, you will need to perform the steps described in theremaining sections twice, the first time for the new installation and thesecond for the upgrade. In the case of an upgrade, if you removed thesoftware prior to installing the newer version, this is considered a newinstallation, so the silent installation process will install the software inthe default location or can specify an alternate location in the

software_name.properties file. If you did not remove the softwareprior to installing a newer version, you can install the software only inthe location of the previously installed software. If you specify an alternatelocation in the software_name.properties file the installer processwill override the alternate location you specified and install the softwarein the same location as the previously installed software.

Note: Only a system administrator can perform a silent installation and removal.

Creating the response file

This section describes how to create a response file. The response file will store the setupconfiguration so that you can install the initialization utility, host agent, Navisphere CLI,or server utility on all attached Windows servers using one command. Since no input isrequired, this type of installation is referred to as a silent installation.

We recommend that you download and install the most recent version of the Unisphereserver software from the applicable support by product page on the EMC Online Supportwebsite.

1. Download the software:

a. From the EMC Online Support website, select the VNX Support by Product page andlocate the Software Downloads.

b. Select the Unisphere server software you want to install.

c. Select the option to save the software to your server and save it to a folder on yourlocal hard drive.

d. Navigate to the software you saved on your server and double-click the executablefile to start the installation wizard.

2. Open a command prompt window and navigate to the folder where you put theexecutable installation package. For example, if you copied the installation package to a folder called ResponseFile onyour C: drive, you would enter cd ResponseFile in the command window.

3. Depending which executable installation package you downloaded, enter one of thefollowing commands:◆ HostAgent.exe –r

◆ NaviSECCli.exe –r

◆ ServerUtil.exe –r

◆ InitTool.exe –r

34 Updating Unisphere Server Software

Silent installations and removals using the InstallAnywhere package

4. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

When the installation is complete, the installer creates a file in the current workingdirectory called installer.properties. This file contains your responses during theinstallation process.

5. Navigate to the installer.properties file and rename the file to software_name.properties, where software_name is the name of the software you installed. For example, HostAgent.properties.

Continue to the next section to perform a silent installation.

6. If you are performing a new installation, also referred to as a fresh installation, renamethe file to software_nameNew.properties, where software_name is the name of thesoftware you installed. For example, HostAgentNew.properties.

◆ If you are performing an upgrade or a new installation and an upgrade in the sameenvironment, repeat steps 3 through 5, then rename the installer.propertiesfile to software_nameUpgrade.properties, where software_name is the name ofthe software you installed.

For example, HostAgentUpgrade.properties.

7. If the text user USERNAME@SYSTEMNAME appears at the end of the agent.configfile, edit the response file to add USER_ID and SYSTEM_ID or run installer -r againto create a correct response file.

8. Move the properties file or files to a working directory or shared directory.

Running the silent installation

Follow the procedure below to perform a silent installation.

Note: The InstallAnywhere installation package can use UNC paths or drive paths.

1. On another attachedWindows server (not the same server on which you created theresponse file), open a command prompt window.

2. Depending onwhere you put the properties file that was created in the previous section, run one of the following commands:◆ If the properties file is in the currentworking directory:

software_name.exe -i silent -f software_name.properties

Running the silent installation 35

HostAgent.exe -i silent –f HostAgentNew.propertiesor

HostAgent.exe -i silent –f HostAgentUpgrade.properties

◆ If the properties file is on a shared drive:

software_name.exe -i silent –f \\UNC_PATH\software_name.properties

For example,

HostAgent.exe -i silent –f \\UNC_PATH\HostAgent.properties

Note: If the properties file is given without a path, the installation package will look in the currentworking directory only.

3. The installation process will start in silent mode.

4. Repeat 2 and 3 on all remaining attached Windows servers.

Preparing for a silent removal

Follow the procedure below to perform a silent removal.

1. On theWindows server in which you performed the silent installation, open a commandprompt window.

2. Navigate to the directory in which you installed the software, and enter the followingcommand:
