It is hard to believe that May is upon us! Our students continue to make great strides in academic areas as evidenced by their writing, tasks completed, and other work! Please keep that drive to succeed in the forefront always! May continues to have a heavy focus on PARCC testing, which is a state assessment we are required by law to give to students in grades 3-5. We have always said that no assessment is the “end all, be all” but it is important for students to do the best they can! If you have questions about this assessment/the grade level schedules, please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. McCalpin, our Assistant Principal, who is the School Test Coordinator. Prior to the assessment, we had a pep rally for students! Special thanks to Mr. Mawhinney and Mrs. Hughes for coordinating, Mrs, Duke, Mr. West, Mrs Ugolini, Mrs. Brockman, and Ms. Mason for the skit, Mrs. Humphrey for the music, and Mrs. McCalpin for leading the song, as well as all staff and students that participated. WARM WEATHER AND DRESS CODE: With the warm weather approaching, we have the need to send home some reminders about dress code:

    • No bare feet. If your child has gym, please have them wear sneakers, not flip flops or sandals.

    • No hats, hoods, or head coverings once they enter the building unless required by health, hygiene or religious reasons.

    • Leggings/Jeggings/Yoga Pants - may be worn only if a shirt is worn over top of the pants and reaches mid-thigh.

    • Skirts - Need to be fingertip length not only while standing but also while walking. Please check that students are adequately covered when sitting.

    • Shorts - Need to be fingertip length

    • Pajama pants are not permitted

    • Undergarments cannot be showing, either top or bottoms.

    • Tank tops and spaghetti straps as well as one shoulder tops are not permitted.

Lunch Money Due to the Cafeteria If your child has borrowed lunch money from the cafeteria, now is the time to send in your money to pay back the loan. This will provide us with funds to start the next year for children who have forgotten their lunch or lost their lunch money. We don’t want to have a child go hungry. Academics are affected when children do not have a proper breakfast or lunch. Please help us provide the funds for our children to be health and succeed. Your support in this effort is greatly appreciated. For the remainder of the school year, please try to ensure that your child has lunch or breakfast/lunch money available to them to purchase breakfast/lunch. Summer Office Hours The Office will be open from 7:30 - 3:30 beginning June 18. We will resume the normal hours of 8:00 - 4:00 on August 22.

    Have a great summer!

  • Kindergarten Happy Spring!!! We hope you all had a relaxing and rejuvenating spring break. We are back and ready to rock the end of Kindergarten. In language arts, we will be reviewing rainbow words. We will be practicing all of our reading strategies and skills. We will be blending with short vowel word families and begin to blend with cvce (consonant vowel consonant magic e- for example kite). In writing, we are working on stating our opinion and stating reasons to support. We will be working on identifying and using adjectives and verbs. In math, we will be revisiting adding and subtracting. We will also be working on decomposing 11-19 into tens and ones. We will also be reviewing shapes, patterns and measuring. In science and social studies, we are working on using our power and words to change our environment. We will discuss restoring habitats and ways to improve our community. We are looking forward to finishing our school year strong!

Kindergarten Team First Grade We can’t believe the end of the year is quickly approaching! We will have an exciting end to our school year! For social studies and science, we have been working with our final theme: I am curious about how people overcome challenges. In Unit 1: Bubbleology –The students are discovering how to make bubbles, what causes

bubbles to pop, and the shape of all bubbles. The students love being able to blow bubbles in and outside of the classroom. In Unit 2: Between a Rock and a

Hard Space – The students will explore the difference between wants and needs and examine how to get goods and services from their environment. In Unit 3 – Inventors Take Action – The students will learn that people invent things to overcome challenges. At the end of the unit our first graders will have an opportunity to design an original invention. In math, the students have been adding two-digit numbers with a one-digit number. They have discovered that sometimes when joining the ones

together a new ten is made. In May, the students will also explore measuring with non-standard units so they can answer the questions, “How many?” and “How many more?” We will end the year with solving word problems using our basic facts that we have been practicing all year! Thank you for your continued support at home as we are getting ready to move the children into second grade!

    The First Grade Team

Second Grade We’ve come a long way! The progress the students have made this year is impressive! The students have

taken their Quarterly Assessments in Math and

Reading/ Language Arts. We are very happy with the

overall grade level performance. We still have work to

do and things to look forward to.

We’ve finished our “Time Travelers” unit, and we

are now in the Theme 4, Unit 1: “We are

Researchers.” Throughout this unit, students will be

researching and participating in experiments to

discover ways to be healthy. They’ll be learning how to

analyze data and communicate as researchers. In our

final unit of study “We Are Change Makers,” students

will explore empathy, leadership, and teamwork to

problem solve and learn how to

make a positive difference in the

    world.

    In math, students will be

learning and interpreting data using line plots,

pictographs, and bar graphs. Then we will be moving

into our M2 Unit on Area. Students will be building

arrays and participating in several hands on learning

    activities.

As the year comes to a close, please continue to

support your child’s learning. At this point of the

year, teacher expectations for student independence

and responsibility are high. Keep reading and

practicing math facts. Remind your child of behavioral

expectations. Thank you in advance for your

    cooperation.

We have truly enjoyed being a part of your child’s

academic, emotional, and social growth! Thank you for

your support in making this a successful year! The Second Grade Team

Third Grade WOW! We can’t believe we are writing our last

newsletter entry for the school year already! In so

many ways it seems like the time has flown by! The

students have made a lot of growth and progress this

year, that’s for sure! Many say that third grade is

the toughest. So, congratulations! We’re almost

    done!

We will continue to work hard through May and

into June, so don’t let the weather or summer’s

approaching fool you. There is still a lot of material

to cover. Continue to try to keep a routine/schedule

    going!

In reading, we are finishing the theme of

Creativity. In this theme we have been using literary

and informational text to engage students in

    exploration.

In writing, we will revisit narrative writing from

    the first marking period. However,

this time our focus will be on Fairy

    Tales!

In math, we will continue to multiply larger

numbers, so get out those flash cards and start

drilling the basic facts again. We will be looking at

different strategies to help tackle those problems. It

will make a big difference as your child prepares to

use these skills for life. Many students need extra

practice in this area. We’ve also been reviewing

solving multiple step word problems as they apply to

    the real world.

All subject areas will be working together to

complete an Environmental Action Project. Students

will be researching different environmental issues.

Students will be collecting data, analyzing data and

developing a solution. If you have any old t-shirts

keep them handy for our final activity for the

    Environmental Action Project.

Our science classes will be generating and

comparing possible solutions to an environmental

problem. The focus is to meet the criteria and

    constraints of the problem.

In closing, thank you for the time and dedication

you have given to your child and the school this year.

We know that you are your child’s first and best

teachers, and we have been lucky to have had an

opportunity to work with all of you.

    The Third Grade Team

Grade Four 4th grade will be going on our last field trip to Arlington Echo either May 15 (Hawkins and Knower) or May 16 (Baillieul and Duke). Please send in your money and forms if you have not. We continue to work on fiction and non-fiction text. We continue to work on comprehension skills: problem and solution, cause and effect, fact and opinion, drawing conclusions, main idea and details, summarizing, making inferences, and author's perspective. We are getting ready to conduct the last set of F& P testing (identify reading levels and student ability to answer comprehension effectively). Grammar instruction will focus on adverbs, negatives and prepositions. All students will continue to participate in advanced learning strategies such as Socratic seminar, higher level questioning and continue to be exposed to the Jacob's Ladder program, In math we are working on Geometry-shapes and symmetry (4G.1; G.2 and G.3), Hands on Equations (Algebra program), Multi-step word problems (4.NBT.4; 4.NBT.5 and 4.NBT.6). It is important for student to continue to practice their basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to improve their fluency and help to complete math problems. In science, we will explore the topics of engineering and fueling the environment. Students will discuss sources of energy and creating plans to solve problem in the environment. Social Studies Students will continue their study of Maryland. We are wrapping up our discussion of Economics and will discuss New America (changes to America during World conflicts). The last social studies benchmark will be given in May.

    Fourth Grade Team

    Grade Five Writing –

To drink or not to drink…chocolate milk…that is. That is the question fifth graders will answer and support this month. The students will focus on opinion/argumentative writing. They will need to develop their thesis and support that thesis

with facts, evidence, and quotes. One of the most challenging concepts the students will encounter is to thoroughly explain what the quote means and why it is relevant to their thesis. In addition, they will need to include possible counterarguments. Once again, this is a process in which we will work on step by step.

Reading- This May, fifth graders will dive into some deep reads! In our ALPS single subject class, we will begin our final ALPS novel study, The Fingertips of Duncan Dorfman. In guided reading groups students will continue and complete their novels and activities, as well as read some nonfiction books. Our May StoryWorks magazine has many intriguing reads that we will jump

  • Page 5 into. Fifth grade is making a splash with some great reads this May!

    Math –

Theme 4 – Unit 14 Big Ideas: Exploring the Coordinate Plane In this unit, students will build on their knowledge of numerical patterns to discover that when two rules are used to create two numerical patterns, a relationship exists between corresponding terms. At the beginning of the unit, students will gain familiarity with the rules of the coordinate plane, how to plot, and identify ordered pairs. Students will then use this knowledge to represent relationships on the coordinate plane. These concepts will be addressed more fully in middle school. Theme 3 – Unit 15 Big Ideas: Finalizing Multiplication and Division In this unit, students finalize their understanding of multiplying multi-digit whole numbers using a variety of strategies involving place value (area model and partial products) and connect their understanding to solve problems using the standard algorithm for multiplication. Students also solve division problems with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors and relate their understanding of arrays to the area model and partial quotients method. Students solve a variety of multi-step word problems which involve interpreting remainders and using a variety of strategies to solve.

Social Studies – We will wrap up the year by learning about the Constitution Convention and how the U.S. Constitution helped to establish the government we have today. We will be looking at each of the three branches of government and the Bill of Rights.

Science – We will finish the year with our last unit, “Engineering Design”. In this unit, students will be completing the engineering design process as they design and test water filter prototypes. They will then create a prototype to desalinate water. As we work through this process students will be focusing on these exploration questions: 1. How has human water consumption impacted Earth? 2. How do humans get clean drinking water? 3. How can we design a water filter? 4. How can we desalinate water?

Philadelphia- Our trip to Philadelphia will be on Tuesday, May 29th. This trip will be an extended day trip. We will be leaving school promptly at 7:00 am and returning around 8:30 pm. A reminder will go home with students a week prior to the trip about when they need to be here and what they will need to bring.

Promotion- The Fifth-grade promotion ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 14th at 8:45 am. The ceremony should be over by 10:15 am. As per county policy, all visitors will be required to have a badge to enter the building as this event is taking place during school hours. If you have not completed and sent in the orange guest form your child brought home, please do so by June 7th. Those guests who pre-register and have had their identification

scanned into the system will be granted early admittance into the school on the day of promotion (approximately

7:45 am). All visitors will need to show their

identification in order to obtain their pre-printed visitor badge on the day of the event, even if pre-registered and scanned. Those visitors that wait until the day of the event to have their identification scanned will enter the school at 8:05 am, have their identification scanned, and then receive a visitor badge. If for any reason the scanning system is not working on the day of the event, those visitors that were not pre-scanned and pre-registered will be unable to attend the ceremony We have really enjoyed teaching this year’s group of fifth graders and we are going to be sad when they leave the Farm next month. We are so proud of how far the students have come since the beginning of the year and we know that they will continue to make Windsor Farm proud in middle school. We hope you all have a great summer and will see all of our students and their families at promotion on June 14th.

    The Fifth Grade Team

    From the Band Room

Parents, in the month of May, we will be continuing to improve in all areas of our musicianship. The intermediate and advance strings students and advanced band students will do some sight reading to practice our note reading skills. Beginners in strings and band will primarily use our books to improve our note reading and technique. Posture is a big part of being a good musician. Good posture and position make it easier to play and get a good sound. We will continue to work on our bow hold in strings and our breath control in band. Percussionists will dive into learning more rudiments and practice note reading using the bells in class. With spring, many activities can prevent students from finding time to practice. If your child plans to continue with their instrument next year, please help them to set aside time to practice every day. Even 10 minutes of practice can help them to keep their skills fresh. Thank you for your support of Windsor Farm Music.

    Sincerely, Ms. McCusker

Parking Lot Please remember to practice safe driving techniques as you enter, park, and leave the lot when dropping off/picking up children or visiting the school. Children often dart in and out of cars often not being aware of other cars in motion. By parking in designated parking spots and not blocking parked cars or parking in lanes we can keep our children safe and avoid injury. Please also remember that the reserved spots are for office staff members that have to come in and get the office running for you and your child’s needs or returning from meetings or school related business. Let’s all be conscious of our driving and parking habits. Thank you
