Dear Parents and Carers Students across Windsor Learning Partnership were involved in our Taster Day this week. The event brought together boys and girls from across the two Windsor upper schools with the aim of trying Sixth Form lessons and finding out more about the subjects available at Key Stage 5. It was exciting to see students experiencing a wide range of options across the two school sites and take the next steps in their choices. Over the next few weeks, all Year 11 students will have an interview with a senior member of staff and they will have the opportunity to revisit their options. At time of writing, Year 10 history students are visiting the First World War battlefields and historic sites in Belgium. The recent cold weather will certainly have added to the experience and students will have been able to imagine the conditions soldiers on both sides would have had to endure. We look forward to hearing about their trip in next week’s newsletter. The Aspiring High group visited Brasenose College this week, and were able to find out more about studying at Oxford. They had a tour and took part in workshops to develop their knowledge further. We also welcomed a film maker to school to speak with Media Studies students. This fantastic opportunity allowed students to ask key questions about the industry and film making in general. The latest house competition took place this week. Students participated in a Windsor Girls’ School ‘Bake Off’. The first round was hard fought and successful students will progress to the next round where they will face the show-stopper task. Next week, we welcome students who have successfully completed the various levels of the Duke of Edinburgh to our presentation evening. Students should have received an invitation to what promises to be a great evening, celebrating the achievements of our students. The event will begin at 5:45pm with some welcoming drinks and canapés before the presentations commence. Mr P Griffiths and Mrs E O’Carroll Co-Headteachers

Year Information

Year 9 Magistrate's Court Mock Trial Competition - participants in Year 9 are meeting on Tuesday, 29 January, at Break 2 in Room 18 with Mr J. Griffiths, the Magistrate, and Ms Zarzecka. As agreed during last week’s session, please start a notebook devoted to notes regarding the competition. In the notebook you should create a timeline of events as per the scripts, "witnesses statements, etc.", as well as make any notes relating to discrepancies or arguments that the defence or prosecution can use in court. The What Do You Think? Club started this week. Please go along to Room 17 at Break 2 on Thursdays to have your say in a range of local and national issues. Year 10 Geography students will be departing for their trip to Iceland this week. We look forward to hearing all about it. Keep an eye on the Geography Department twitter feed to track their progress. Year 11 Full reports are being finalised and will be coming home shortly. Sixth Form interviews are scheduled across the next few weeks for all Year 11 students. The purpose is to support students in their choices for Key Stage 5 and explore the different routes towards their goals.

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards evening takes place on Thursday, 31 January, at 5:45pm in the school Hall. Next week is Community Week with a focus on the environment. There will be an additional Choir rehearsal on Monday, from 2:00pm – 3:30pm, to prepare for the upcoming performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Science Club: all students are invited to bring their experiment ideas in, and if possible we will execute them in the future Science Club editions! This week we discovered how to make silver and next week we will enjoy "Physical wonders and puzzles." Come and join us - any year, any set - at break 2 on Thursday, in lab 31.

SIXTH FORM

A reminder to students travelling to Washington DC and New York in February that ESTAs should be ordered as soon as possible. Internal examinations for Year 13 begin the week beginning 25 February, the first week after half term.

Aspiring High

“On Thursday, Aspiring High embarked on a trip to Oxford University. I have always dreamt of going to this prestigious university but the idea has seemed to be unattainable. This trip has shown me that with hard work and individuality, going to Oxford can become a reality and so, as we toured around Brasenose and met current students, it inspired me. We were told about all the stunning architecture, participated in a practice lecture, we were also given advice on admissions and had a delicious three course lunch in their stunning dining hall! Aspiring High always provides such unique opportunities and this is just one of many that has helped me immensely in reaching my potential.” - Aliya Prichard-Casey, Year 12

After we were treated to a three course lunch in the dining hall, the students had the opportunity to engage in a Philosophy lecture. For Ms Jenkins, the highlight was being served coffee from a silver jug. Thanks to the girls who behaved impeccably

Year 11 Taster Day

On Tuesday, Year 11 students from the Windsor Learning Partnership joined together for the Taster Day. This was an opportunity to find out more about subjects in the Sixth Form across both schools. Students enjoyed working together and exploring the various options.

On Thursday, 10 January, 42 Year 11 and 12 Art students went on a trip to the Tate Modern gallery in London. They were able to see contemporary art work in a gallery setting and were keen to learn what the work was about and discuss the social themes that the artists had explored. This has given them an invaluable opportunity to gather first hand research for their forthcoming examination project. The students behaved impeccably and Ffion Jones, Year 12, said, “It was really inspiring to see such a wide variety of contemporary art all in one place.”

Year 10 English

The recent Year 10 English unit on gothic fiction culminated with the students writing their own 200 word piece inspired by H.G. Wells' 'The Red Room'. The top two were selected from each set and added to the wall by the English Department corridor. Please do have a read of them if you are in the vicinity. The 14 selected students, all of whom received subject teacher commendations, are: Lauren Russell, Vaneeza Butt, Freya Meek, Maya Waller, Elora Carrard, Francesca Crossfield, Maleeha Chandhar, Ellie Smith, Aisha Touray, Faye Vallis-Brown, Shannon O'Brien, Camille Wallis-Desbalens, Tailah McCarthy, and Vicky Zientarska. Food Department News We have had a very busy start to 2019 in the Food Department. Kicking off with the Year 11 Food and Nutrition group travelling up to London to visit Borough Market. The students are researching “Street Food” for their practical examination and so it was great to be able to see all of the street food stalls, quiz the customers and vendors and sample a selection of the food. The whole group came back with lots of ideas of exciting dishes to trial.

Secondly, the Year 10 Hospitality and Catering group visited the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel to gain an insight into the Catering industry. The students had a tour of the hotel and were able to ask many questions of the managers and head chef. They were all very impressed with the hotel and would like to return for lunch in the Brasserie. On Tuesday evening, we held the first round of the Bake Off – The Technical Challenge. The students all cooked a batch of scones using the same recipe. The results were impressive and the judging panel found it very difficult to choose only two students from each house to go through to the Showstopper

round – where they will be able to demonstrate their cake baking and decorating skills. All competitors will be making a Valentine themed cake. Congratulations to the following students who have made it through to the Showstopper final:
