Young Enterprise Success
On Wednesday 9th May, Windsor High School and Sixth Form’s Young Enterprise Team attended the Black Country Area Finals with their Social Enterprise ‘HOP’. They had a fantastically successful evening and were awarded prizes for ‘Best Company Report’ and ‘Best Company’.
HOP, stands for ‘Helping Others Prosper’, it is a web based social enterprise which guides young people to professional services that can help them manage mental health and personal conflicts. They beat 18 other companies in the Black Country who started the competition in September 2017 and 9 teams who made it to the area finals. They are now excitedly preparing to compete at the Regional Finals which will take place on 13th June at the West Midlands Safari Park. Value of the Fortnight: Giving I believe that we all have a responsibility to give back. No one becomes successful without lots of hard work, support from others, and a little luck. Giving back creates a virtuous cycle that makes everyone more successful.

Book of the Month Mollie on the March by Anna Carey
This lovely novel is especially poignant as this year commemorates 100 years since women
won the vote. But only some women.
This story is told from the point of view of Mollie Carberry. She lives in Dublin with her
comfortably-off parents and siblings and goes to a convent school. Her eldest sister Phyllis
has joined the suffragette movement so Mollie and best friend Nora decide to join, too.
Only secretly, so no-one knows!
The girls hear of a large protest and immediately want to be part of it. Unfortunately,
this is easier said than done. Things would be more straightforward if they didn’t have
Nora’s awful cousin Grace to deal with, or her horrid brother or the neighbour’s irritating
dog. Life as a suffragette is never dull!
Mollie is a lively, effervescent character. Her story is told through the letters she writes to her friend Francis, a
refreshing way to tell the tale. The historical details of the movement are such that we are aware of how brave
these women were, how scared they must have been and how determined. The author does not shirk mentioning
the hunger strikes and the force feeding, barbaric to our modern sensibilities. A very good read indeed!
The Representation of the People Act 1918 became law on 6 February 1918., giving the vote to virtually all men over 21, and women over 30 who met certain requirements. In November 1918 an act was passed enabling women to stand for parliament in future elections. The only woman to win a seat in parliament across the UK in December 1918 was Constance Markievicz, who was elected by the people of south Dublin. She did not take her seat. In 1922, the new Irish Free State gave the vote to all women over 21, finally giving Irish women the same voting rights as Irish men.
