From the Helm

Happy Easter! It’s hard to believe it, but AJ is

already turning 4 this month. Time flies when you are

having fun and we’ve had nothing but fun for the past

few years.

The rain hasn’t gone away completely, but

we’re starting to see more summer-like weather. Hope-

fully Spring has sprung and we are on our way to warmer

and windier days.

A few members and instructors have now had a

chance to sail our electric boat (Robbie J) since she was

re-powered and the feedback so far is fabulous. He gen-

eral consensus is that it’s a bit weird when you first pull

out of the slip and don’t have the usual engine and

transmission noises, but once you get used to it you’ll

fall in love with it.

We’ve added enough new boats to the fleet this

winter to keep everyone sailing happily for the season.

The member-to-boat ratio hasn’t been lower since we

took over 5 years ago. We are going through the usual

spring shakedown - boats that haven’t been sailed much

over the past few months are starting to go out and

we’re finding and working out the kinks that develop

when boats aren’t used. They were made for sailing,

after all, not sitting in the slip getting rained on!

We’ll be closed Easter Sunday, so have fun sail-

ing and use the emergency number if you need to get

hold of us. Don’t forget to come see us at the boat show

at Jack London Square—details are in the Events section

(Page 2). We hope to see you there!

Enjoy your spring breaks - and take a friend sail-

ing!

Tradewinds Friday Night Race Meeting - There are possibly going to be up to 14 teams

this year , so we have divided them up into First Friday Group and Third Friday group. We are going to have a mandatory skipper and crew meeting Friday, April 9th at 6:30pm to go over the rules , times, and courses for the races. This will be the only Skipper and crew meeting this year, so don't miss it. You will be able to meet the other teams and crews during that meeting. You might want to have alternate crew for back up, because you know how life can get in the way of fun. We are taking signups from now 'till the end of April . Contact Butch [email protected] or phone 510-232-7999 . If you have sailors to make a team up now then let us know who they are. You have to have a skipper (needs to be a Skipper or Fleet level Tradewinds Member), main trimmer, jib trimmer and if you want a fourth he is tactician. If you need crew or want to be crew, please give me your name and I will find a po-sition on a boat for you.

Apr 10 10am-Noon

Knots Seminar - Join us at the clubhouse for a seminar on all of our basic knots and their

uses. This is a great chance for our skippers to bring in some of their crew and let us teach them the knots that they will need while sailing with you. It’s also a great opportunity to brush up on the knots that you need to know for your next ASA course. Check your log book to see what knots will be required at each level of certification. $20/person

Apr 15-18

Strictly Sail Show - We’ll have our booth in the main building and we’ll be giving free sail-

boat rides down on the docks. Come and visit, browse the show, see what type of specials we are offering on our classes for this year’s boat show! See http://www.strictlysailpacific.com/ for show details.

Apr 24 11am-3pm

Open House - Come and see us at our facility in beautiful Marina Bay. Enjoy a free hot-dog

lunch and sign up for a ride on one of our fleet boats. If you’d like to take a free ride, show up early—they usually book up well before the last ride at 3pm.

Apr 24 6pm-9pm

Tradewinds Social - Bring your favorite pot-luck appetizers and drinks and mix it up with

the sailors of the Tradewinds Fleet! Come and swap sea-stories and meet people to sail with. Fun to be had by all! ARRRRRRR!

Apr 27 10am-3pm

Intro to Sailing - Join us for a sail on The Bay! All welcome. A typical 5 hour Bay sail from

Marina Bay includes a trip through Raccoon Straight, around Angel Island, across the ―Slot‖, down the San Francisco city front, and a leisurely down-wind sail back home. The route may change according to conditions, of course! Free for Members, $40 for Non-Members.

Apr 29 10am-noon

Sail Repair and Kits Seminar - Angie Rowland will open up her sail repair kit and give

you a peek! She’ll show you what you should take and how to use it to make minor sail repairs underway. She’ll also give some insight into how to tell if sails are nearing the end of their life or if they should be repaired. $20/members, $30/non-members.

California Coastal Cruise!

This is a two-part trip up California’s coastline with Tradewinds Instructor Jerry Rouillard on Sea Story, a Pear-

son 39 outfitted for offshore cruising. It’s the perfect trip for those who want an affordable, offshore cruising ex-

perience in a manageable time frame. The first section of the trip is from San Diego to Santa Barbara via Catalina

Island. The second section is from Santa Barbara to San Francisco. Each section will be booked separately for just

that leg of the trip. Crew slots will be limited to three individuals, or two individuals and one couple who can

share the same cabin. Prices include provisions. As with any sea voyage the dates are the best we can plan in ad-

vance. If you would like to sign up please plan a day or two on either end as “just-in-case” days

Leg One: San Diego to Santa Barbara – June 5th to June 9th.

Crewmembers for this leg will meet on June 5th and set sail that afternoon for Catalina with a possible interim,

overnight anchorage at Santa Cruz Island. After an overnight stay at Catalina it will be an easy hop up to Santa

Barbara. With no weather delays, crewmembers will be replaced by those on the second leg of the trip. Cost:

$595.00

Leg Two: Santa Barbara to San Francisco – June 9th to June 13th.

The crew will board the afternoon of the 9th of June and set sail. The itinerary will include one overnight stopover

at Monterey, Morro Bay or the anchorage at San Simeon. Anticipated arrival in Santa Francisco will be June 13th.

Cost: $595.00

Please Note:

Due to the nature of this trip, we’d only like you to sign up if you can be flexible by two days either at the

beginning or the end of your leg. If weather conditions dictate, we may adjust the departure time by two

days in either direction. The cost of the trip will be non-refundable.

New Boat in the Fleet

We have added 2 boats to the fleet. They are Sea Angel - Catalina 42 (Platinum Fleet) and Pain Killer - Catalina 34 (Gold Fleet). Sea Angel was active on March 15th and Pain Killer will be active and available on April 1st. Watch your calendar for checkouts.

Exotic Thailand ! November 2 – 14, 2010

Are you ready for something new and exciting and truly exotic? Join us in Thailand, located at just 8º latitude, where the sun is always hot, the water is always warm, and the people are friendly and smiling. Thailand (formerly known as Siam) has thousands of years of history, and is exotic in most every way. The architecture, the natural scenery, the people and the food, all will leave your senses on overload. Discover breathtaking coastlines framed by magnificent high peaks, steep cliffs and luscious hillsides. Explore thou-sands of miles of pristine beaches, anchor off deserted islands and dive into true blue waters. This sailing area remains relatively undiscovered by tourists and is a step back in time. Our adventure will start by flying from San Francisco to Bangkok, where we will enjoy 3 nights in a luxury hotel, with plenty of time to explore the city, the floating markets, the vast shopping and dining opportunities, the nightlife, and so much more. Next we will fly to Phuket, a world-class destination due to its warmth, endless white sand beaches, dramatic limestone towers and tropical jungles. It’s also a place where both the air and water temperatures will be in the 80’s and 90’s. We’ll go to a brand new charter base in a brand new marina, and board our brand new exclusive yachts! Big, luxury catamarans, these yachts have tons of interior cabin and salon space, huge covered cockpit areas for re-laxing in the shade, rear swimstep and snorkeling platforms, raised flybridge steering stations and acres of deckspace for soaking up the tropical sunshine. HERE’S THE DEAL: David Kory and Tradewinds are offering this incredible sailing adventure for the amazing low

price of just $3,375 per person*, which includes almost everything: the yachts and all their ameni-ties, round trip airfare from San Francisco to Bang-kok and Phuket, 3 nights of hotels in Bangkok, and all transfers. The only thing you’ll spend money on there is food, drink and souvenirs. Tradewinds Members and their cabin mates get a $200 per person discount, making it an even bet-ter deal! This trip has already become one of our most popular trips in years, and like all of David’s previ-ous adventures, it will sell out. A deposit of $675 per person will hold your spot. An additional de-posit of $1000 will be due May 1, and the balance will be due on September 1. Don’t delay- sign up today! For answers to your questions, more pictures and

details, or if you are ready to join us, contact:

David Kory: [email protected] 925-787-6893 * The price listed includes all taxes and fuel surcharges as of January 10, 2010. If the world goes crazy again and the airlines add new fuel surcharges or invent new taxes, we may have to pass these on to you. I don’t expect that to happen, but I have to warn you just in case. Cancellation Policy: 6 months before departure, full refund. 6 months to 90 days, loss of deposits. Less than 90 days before departure

Nautical Terminator “She”?

By Marianne Wheeler

Why is a ship a ―she‖?

From the Norwegian Merchant Fleet, 1939 - 1945

We always call a ship a "she" and not without a reason.

For she displays a well-shaped knee regardless of the season.

She scorns the man whose heart is faint and doesn't show him pity.

And like a girl she needs the paint to keep her looking pretty.

For love she'll brace the ocean vast, be she a gig or cruiser.

But if you fail to tie her fast you're almost sure to lose her.

On ships and dames we pin our hopes, we fondle them and dandle them.

And every man must know his ropes or else he cannot handle them.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

When I first started sailing, it was strange to me that boats were referred to as “she”. A boat is a boat is a boat and should be called “it” just like a car or a plane. I often pointed out the nonsense of calling a boat “she”. If it must be given a gendered pronoun, it should be a strong, rough and tough “he”. A boat has to stand up to wind and weather like a knight in armor.

But over time, friends, male friends, would explain to me their reasons why a boat should be a “she”. It’s an analogy to the reverence that sailors have for the important women in their lives. Like, a ship is nearer and dearer to the sailor than anyone, except his mother or wife. Without “her” he would drown. A ship carries, protects and eventually delivers her cargo or pas-sengers as does a mother with her child.

It was suggested that all boats, especially traditional ones, are all curves. There is nothing very straight about any boat or woman. Certainly the hull is most womb-like in its form. And imagine an ancient ship under sail, viewed in profile. The rounded shape of wind-filled sails reminded men of a woman’s bosom, I have been told.

Ships were traditionally given female names and even dedicated to goddesses for the benefit of protection. Although women were considered to bring bad luck at sea, mariners always used the pronoun "she" when referring to their ships. Whether its proper name is masculine, or whether it is a man o' war, a battleship, or a nuclear submarine, a ship is always referred to as “she”.
