An 1991 episode of the American news program 60 Minutes that documented the

low mortality rate from cardiovascular disease among the French who had a high-

alcohol, high-cholesterol and low exercise lifestyle in contrast to the high mortality

rate among Americans with a relatively lower cholesterol, low alcohol and more

Now in its 15th year, the ADW is the original distilling workshop — a comprehensive primer with

distillation techniques demonstrated on commercial-scale copper pot distilleries — presented jointly

by Michigan State University's Professor Kris Berglund (also author of ‘Artisan Distilling: A Guide

for Small Distilleries’); Chris Gerling of Cornell University's Brewing & Vinification

Laboratory; Alexander Plank of CARL Distilleries, Germany's oldest distillery fabricator; and

Nicolas Haase of B&D Technologies - CARL Distilleries' Americas office.

The course agenda of the Workshop will alternate between theoretical presentations and discussions,

and practical demonstrations on Las Vegas Distillery's commercial distilling facility, which includes

two 650 liter capacity copper pot stills with finishing and high rectification plate columns, as well as

complete mashing, fermentation and alcohol finishing.

This is a comprehensive introductory course and our practical and theoretical course work will cover

all aspects and techniques of artisan distillation. At this distillery facility, we will primarily be

utilizing grain for whiskey and vodka distillation, but the breadth of techniques demonstrated will

apply to most any types of spirits.

Cost: $525 each. Covers workshop, materials and meals.

11-3, Herbicide Drift Seminar – Lincoln, NE By: R. Thomas Zumpfe, Dove Landing Vineyard - Lincoln, NE

A Seminar on Herbicide Drift has been scheduled on Nov. 3, 2012, at Southeast Community

College, 301 So. 68th St., Lincoln. Herbicide drift has been a problem for America’s vineyards for

decades. It arrests plant growth, may cause plant death, and often eliminates the crop. The early

Page 6: Wine-Grower-News #217 · 10-(26 &27), Artisan Distilling Workshop – Henderson, NV What: The Artisan Distilling Workshop TM Fall Session 2012 Where: Las Vegas Distillery, 7330 Eastgate

spring this year created conditions that exposed many northern states’ vineyards to high levels of

damage and economic loss from 2,4-D.

The Nebraska Wine Grape Growers Association (NWGGA) ad hoc 2,4-D Committee has been

working on your behalf, bringing together resources to help you understand the damage pesticide

drift can cause in your vineyard and what resources you have available to you before, during and

after a drift incident. This seminar is a cooperative effort of NWGGA, the University of Nebraska

Viticulture Program, and The Northern Grapes Project. In this seminar, you will learn the history of

harmful herbicides, how drift occurs, the visual symptoms of 2,4-D, glyphosate and dicamba injury

and the harm they can do to grapes, how to mitigate the damage to rescue your plants, how to

estimate your losses to a drift incident, how driftwatch and similar programs work for you, how

various state Departments of Agriculture Pesticide Investigation works and their objectives, examples

of current and past investigations, differing statutes between states, what’s coming in the future –

good and bad, your responsibilities when drift happens to you, and what your liability can become for

the pesticides you spray in your vineyard. (Provided the technology can be brought together, this

seminar may be available as a Northern Grapes Project web seminar to all cold climate state

participants.) A detailed agenda will be available next week.
