WELCOME! This directory is provided to you as a service from the Medical Alumni Association and the Medical Society of the County of Erie. It provides a list of area physicians who have volunteered to serve as a mentor to you, if that is something you desire. All you need to do is contact the person you wish to have as a mentor, introduce yourself, and let the mentor know the general type of relationship you are looking for, or the specific question you might have.
The mentoring program was established in 1997. In the past, we have assigned each student who desired a mentor to a specific mentor. Based on feedback we received from students and mentors who have participated in the program, we have changed the format, last year, allowing students the freedom to choose mentors.
As you heard at Orientation, the deans and staff in the Office of Medical Education are your primary support with regard to questions and concerns which may arise during your student years here at the University at Buffalo. The mentoring program is meant to supplement the services available to you through the Office of Medical Education. If you choose to contact your mentor by email, please include the subject line to read “Medical School Mentoring Program.”
Please realize that if you contact a physician to be your mentor, other students may have already contacted that same physician. It is possible that the physician may not be able to accommodate you. If this happens, you simply need to contact another physician on the list.
If you experience any problems with this program, and in particular if you contact a physician who does not respond, please speak with Jennifer Lobaugh in the Office of Advancement at the School of Medicine and Biomedical

Ask your mentor to tell you about themselves and their work (e.g., how they felt when they were a first-year medical student, description of their workday, major job responsibilities, description of what they like best about their field of specialty).
Find out more about the specialty in which you are interested and if it is a match for you (e.g., what a typical day is like, likes and dislikes, major rewards on the job, skills most utilized, benefits for profession, aspects that would help most on the job).
Ask you mentor for advice (e.g., share your goals, share what course you are enjoying, ask for reference to research, network with other physicians).
Decide on the best way to communicate with each other after the meeting (e.g., email, fax, meet in person over lunch, or by telephone).
Enjoy communicating with your mentor and learn all you can!
