Fish: This reproduction is of an original illustration comparing the differences in male and female fish, from the 5th edition of the ‘’German Meyers Konversations Lexikon 1893 – 1897“. This piece has been perfectly preserved with over 100 years of wear-and-tear captured to add to it’s character. The artwork has been printed onto Airtex canvas, with its brilliant colours and accurate detail carefully restored. Hand-mounted with aged timber batons and 100% cotton rope, each piece is supplied ready to hang. Price $249. Stockist: www.erstwhile.co

Inset: Australia - This reproduction is of the original 1938 wall map “Australia: Pictorial Exploration Map“, published by Chas. H. Scally & Co., Wollstonecraft, NSW. Tell us a little bit about your businessThe Idea behind Erstwhile is to reproduce vintage goods with exquisite care and accuracy, to preserve the beautiful aged look of wear-and-tear from years of use. At the moment we publish exclusively licensed reproductions of mid century wall maps and rare vintage botanical and zoological wall charts. We are planning on introducing other products over time where we can apply the same philosophy.

Tell us about yourselfI am originally from Germany but lived in New Zealand for a few years where I met my partner Lillie. This was followed by a stint in the UK, and then Sydney which we’ve called home for almost 5 years. I have been working in quite a few different professions so far, I am a plumber by trade, ventured into furniture design for a while, worked as photographer, graphic designer and now at Erstwhile it feels like all comes together. It is refreshing to actually do something tangible and see a finished product at the end of the day.

What inspired you to recreate the old maps? I have been in love with old maps for a very long time. I realised there are less and less great vintage roll maps available and if they are available they are quite damaged or not showing the area you want.

Where do you source your beautiful homewares products? And what is important to you when selecting these amazing products? There are two main avenues for sourcing our artworks. One would be to hunt out interesting maps or charts in vintage or antique stores on our travels around the globe. Usually the artworks have some clues of the publisher on them so we just follow the bread crumbs to find the copyright owner and see if we can find an arrangement to republish the artworks. The second one would be going to libraries, rolling up our sleeves and trawling through their archives. We have great relationships with The British Library, German National Library, Library of NSW and the Library of the University of Miami.

Can you give us some hot tips for styling and selecting furniture?I like to mix and match, but try to keep it to an overall colour theme. For furniture the same applies, I think its all in the mix. Perfect if you can find those great vintage statement pieces and mix with something from Ikea.

Where do you shop for your homewares? The best shopping is done while traveling, so each piece has its own story. Unmatched are the European flea markets I absolutely loved the markets in Prague, Berlin and Leipzig (my hometown). In Sydney; Doug up on Bourke, Koskela, Mitchell Road Auctions and Rozelle Markets are high up our list.

The World - This exclusively licenced reproduction is of the original wall map “The World: Mercator’s Projection”. Compiled and published by H.E.C. Robinson in Sydney in the 1940´s, it shows the global political divisions of the time. Price $329. Stockist: www.erstwhile.co

Page 19: Winkelen magazine #2

Cockatoo - This is the reproduction of an original illustration of a Salmon-crested Cockatoo, also known as Moluccan Cockatoo, (originally captioned “Plyctolophus rosaceus: Salmon-crested Cockatoo”) by Edward Lear 1812-1888. Price $249. Stockist: www.erstwhile.co

Page 20: Winkelen magazine #2

What is your favourite trend at the moment?I am in love with everything that tells a story and in particular I am a big fan of industrial and mid century pieces. Just think, old metal lockers, exposed brick walls and worn leather sofas.

Where can you be found? We are based in Rushcutters Bay in Sydney and one of my favourite spots here is the Bird and Bear Boathouse Cafe in Elizabeth Bay. The beach in Nielsen Park is great for some beach time right in the city. In the evening a few cold beers and dinner on the deck of the CYCA in Rushcutters is a good way to finish up a nice day.

Zimmerpflanzen - TThis reproduction is from the original botanical illustration from the 5th edition of the ‘’German Meyers Konversations Lexikon 1893 – 1897’’. Price $279. Stockist: www.erstwhile.co

Virginischer Tabak - This reproduction is from the original educational botanical wall chart from ca. 1899, by German duo Zippel and Bollmann. This is part of their series called ‘’Ausländische Kulturpflanzen in Farbigen Wandtafeln’’. Price $279. Stockist: www.erstwhile.co

BIND | FOLDMeet Vic Pemberton, the design force behind Bind | Fold where by using dyeing techniques

she creates stunning pieces from fabric bowls to devine scarfs

Page 29: Winkelen magazine #2

Tell us a bit about your business?I started Bind | Fold around 1 year ago as a way to share my dye work with other people. I started out Indigo shibori dyeing silk and wool scarves, and have since expanded my product range to include a few homewares, with more new products planned for 2014.

Tell us about yourself and your background? I live in Melbourne with my husband Brett, our son Miles and 2 cats. I’m a dyer and for the past year I’ve spent nearly every day studying and working with Indigo. I’ve also dabbled with other natural dyes, and have recently started working more intensely with dyes like Madder and Fustic, which are red and yellow dyes. My background is a bit all over the place! I studied Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts in the late 90s, and then fell off the face of the earth after I graduated. It wasn’t until a few months after the birth of my son that I once again began to walk a creative path.

What sparked you to create your business?A love for Shibori, which in layman’s terms is Japanese tie dye. Working with Indigo using shibori techniques is at some times frustrating, but some days when you are working in the vat, everything just falls in to place and you’re in sync with the dye, and then really beautiful things can happen. I love those days.

What processes are involved in creating your pieces?Everything I make starts out as a white piece of cloth or yarn. So I begin with the design idea and then I will dye whatever I am working on using my chosen dye technique and colour. Working with natural dyes is quite a lengthy process. Typically the cloth or yarn first needs to be scoured to remove manufacturing residue, then in all cases except Indigo, it needs to be mordanted, which makes the textile ready to accept the dye. Then the piece is dyed, washed and then sometimes painted, and sewn or knit into the final product. Most of my pieces have on average about two hours of hands on work put into them.

< continued from previous page

What inspires you in your designs?I find this such a hard question! What doesn’t inspire me? Everything can be a source of inspiration. I think I find a lot of inspiration just in colour itself, and I’m really drawn to colours found in nature at the moment. I’m having an earthy year I think.I also really love instagram, everyone says it, and everyone is right. There are so many wonderful artists and designers on there sharing their work. Seeing others love doing what they do, makes me love what I do more, and pushes me to try new things. For example, I really love ceramics. I follow quite a few potters on instagram and I just love all the shapes and forms they create. So that has led me to creating my textile ceramic bowls.

What do you love the most about having your own label?I love being able to take it in new directions, and that I have the freedom to create new products as I go based on whatever my current interest is. It’s nice to not be locked in to just making one thing forever.

Who are some of your favourite designers and makers? Gosh, there are so many! As I said before, I really love ceramics, so I have to mention my good friend Sophie Harle at Shiko Pottery. For wall hangings I’m a little obsessed with the in frame weavings done by Belinda Evans for her label Alchemy. I also recently discovered the work of Ariel Alasko, a woodworker from NYC who makes amazing hand carved spoons and tables amongst other things.

What is your favourite item in your store right now and why?I think my textile ceramics are my favourites. I enjoy the process of making them, of forming their shape using my hands. It’s a really different way for me to work, since everything I have made previously has been flat and has movement, so it’s nice to make something that has form and is solid.

Page 33: Winkelen magazine #2

< continued from previous page

What has been your biggest highlight?Exploring my craft, sharing it with others and also meeting like minded crafters and designers who work in different fields. Learning about the work of others and their process is really beneficial, and always gives me a burst of inspiration.

What are your plans for the future? To keep on growing Bind | Fold as organically as possible. I have a few home related product ideas that I’m working on that have been sparked by a collaborative retail venture that will be open for a limited time later this year called Domestic Frontier. It involves a few Melbourne creatives, Sophie J Moran, Bridget Bodenham and Adrianna Christiansen to name a few.

Inspired by a halo type light source, the Halo Modular Light offers lighting without any hot spots or visible globes, appealing to both the domestic and commercial market. Simple, sleek lines for a minimalistic take, a lighting system that has cohesive synergy with the space in which its placed. It is a versatile design that is customisable from user to user to reflect their individuality through arrangement and color. As a modular lighting system, the Halo has the potential to grow as large as one’s space allow.

Spun out of steel, the magnet of one module attracts and sits flush to the next module with potential to rotate at any angle. It is just as easy to pull it apart and readjust when ‘refreshing’ the ambience and has unlimited opportunities to create a fresh look without adding to landfill. Modularity and interchangeable features will become the heritage of the future as mass consumerism continues. Without

supporting the buy and throw away habits, users will be able to achieve a new look by reconfiguration and/ or adding modules or splitting them up. Limitless are the boundaries of its versatility, with clusters interlinking and cords suspended at staggered heights within the entirety of the space. Be it snaking above a long kitchen bench, over a staircase, in a circular formation or in clusters of clouds to be seen from a multi level foyer.

The Halo Modular Light runs on LED lights and consume very little energy, especially when paired with track lighting systems. Furthermore, the components of the lighting design has been kept to its bare minimal with only an outer shell and diffuser with minimal waste on material.

The Halo Light has been exhibited once at The Edge, AIFF 2013 in Sydney Exhibition and Convention Center and was awarded Best Concept Design.

HAVE FUN WITH DIYLThe idea behind DIYL is to provide homeware-lovers with a creative, low cost and

easy-to-use option of transforming a space through the use of a light feature.

How does DIYL work?DIYL or “Design it yourself lights” allows a customer to express their creativity in 3 easy steps:1) Pick a cord2) Pick a cage3) Pick a bulb

How is DIYL different?1) “Design” it yourselfDIYL stands for “Design it yourself lights” seeing as the “do it” part has already been done for you. People crave choice and love expressing their creative personality. DIYL now provides people with the ability to do just that (minus all the hard work).Mixing n’ matching is what DIYL is all about. We have collated a range of styles and colours, so that our customers can achieve any look, for example:

Industrial: Our Black, Zig Zag and Twine cords are perfect for an industrial look and work well with either an exposed bulb or the black cage (we also love the yellow cage for an industrial look too).

Modern & Eclectic: We offer bright pops of colour to suit more modern and/or eclectic styles. Colour clashing is a current trend; we particularly love the orange cord with hot pink cage or even the blue cord with our mint cage.

Kids Rooms: We also provide softer tones to work well in kids rooms or nurseries. Our favourite combo’s for this purpose are the light pink or mint cords with our white cage.

Creative flare can take you anywhere, there are no limits. It is simply a matter of designing what you want to see in your space, then applying the 3 easy steps above… then having the satisfaction of saying “I created that”.

STEP ONE

Page 51: Winkelen magazine #2

2) Plug & GoDIYL aims to provide customers with an easy-to-use option for transforming any space from drab to fab with lighting. That is why our products have a “Plug & Go” system, nothing too complicated here, you just need a powerpoint! No hardwiring required!

The “Plug & Go” system is great for any space as it allows a light to be more of an artistic feature, than a plain ol’ light source. Customers can plug their lights in, hang them from a wall hook, shelving bracket or even drape them over a vintage ladder; the possibilities are endless.

The “Plug & Go” system is also great for people renting their homes, who want to showcase their own creative flare without baring the wrath of their landlord.

Whilst this is one of our key product features,

we also offer ceiling kits for those who want to make their creation a permanent feature. These kits can be installed by a licensed electrician. Whilst made permanent, it does not stop customers from changing their cages or bulbs whenever they have a change in creative mood.

For now we are the new kids on the block, but we have plans for a larger colour and style range and a few more bulb designs too.

WHAT YOU NEED: Plywood for stencilFabric medium: I recommend Simple spray upholstery fabric paint.Paint brushPaint sprayerRug 5’11” x 8’2”JigsawTape

STEP ONE: Create a template of your design using a drawing computer program such as Illustrator. Print on several pieces of 8.5 x 11 paper and tape together. Map out your pattern on your rug using tape. Run tape down the middle of the points of your shape so they line up.

STEP FOUR: Lay your plywood template on your rug, remove tape in the area you are about to paint. Using a small gun lightly spray the edges. If you don’t have a spray gun can you use a brush, however you may get feathered edges. Press firmly on the plywood to prevent underspray. Tip: Use some old paper or something similar around the edges to prevent overspray landing on your rug outside your shape.

STEP TWO: Trace the pattern onto the plywood.

STEP THREE: Cut out the pattern using a jigsaw.

STEP FIVE: Using a small good quality brush paint the interior of your shape. Leave to dry. Once dry apply a second even coat. You may need to apply a further coat depending upon on the material of rug.Tip: Use a matt paint to reduce the sheen. Also a lighter paint color will require less coats.

the home collectiveMeet the collabrative work of a mother and daughter team, Jennifer and Emily Hodges.

They recently released their new range of eco-friendly textiles

Tell us a bit about your business? The Home Collective is a little textile studio run by myself on Melbourne’s Mornington peninsula in collaboration with my mother, Jennifer Hodges, who is a accomplished screen printer and ceramic artist in her own right. Our aim is to create a range of textiles for the home that are on trend, well made and environmentally conscience. All of our textiles are designed and screen printed by hand in the studio using eco-friendly water based inks on natural fibres such as linen, cotton and hemp.

Tell us about yourself and your background?I believe that I was born with a creative gene passed down to me by the amazing women in my family. My great grandmother and great aunts were accomplished seamstresses and painters and my grandmother had a flair for interior design (which she discovered whilst living in Paris) and her homes were always alive with bold colours and design, which were way ahead of their time. I have tried my hand at various creative mediums, studying interior/personal styling,

fashion design and photography whilst Jennifer has a background in textile design/printing, colour & design and printmaking.

What sparked you to create your business?Late in 2010 my mother and I were chatting away over a cup of tea, flicking through a few design magazines at her kitchen table when she pushed a page of cushions under my nose and made the comment “why aren’t we doing this” and that was how it all started.

What processes are involved in creating your pieces?A lot of drawing, scribbling, scrunching up paper and then more drawing followed by too many hours of Photoshopping (and a lot of hair pulling) until the design is just right. This may take up to a year, or may take a few hours. We then send the design off to our screenprinting supplier to be processed. After we have hand mixed our inks and printed each design it is then on to manufacturing which is either completed by us or if it is a large order we send it to our amazing sewing team in Sydney.

What inspires you in your designs?I am inspired by almost everything and anything! I could be watching an old black and white movie or having a coffee in one of Melbourne’s hidden laneways and something will catch my eye and it tends to snowball from there. It could be anything from a colour to someone’s tattoo or even the scent of a candle that kicks me into design mode. I find that I do some of my best work in the middle of the night when insomnia strikes, so I have learnt to keep a notebook beside the bed.

What do you love the most about having your own label?I love being my own boss! I have never felt content to just work day in/day out in the same job for too long, I need to feel challenged and that is what The Home Collective is for me, every day.

Who are some of your favourite designers?I am in awe at the level of talented designers

Contact:The Home Collective [email protected]

we have here in Australia but I really couldn’t pick a favourite.

What is your favourite item in your store right now and why?I would have to say my favourite item at the moment is our new season Hello Lover cushion in the Copper on Charcoal hemp. I am currently obsessed with all things Copper and am completely in love with the thick textured Hemp/Cotton canvas fabric teamed with the fact that I have had this design sitting in my ideas folder for a while and now it’s been brought to life!

What are your plans for the future? We would love to expand The Home Collective to include a range of ceramics and bedding. We have been working on The Mini Collective - our kids label - for some time and hope to release it soon! The dream is to open our own store/work shop offering classes and services to small businesses.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? We will be attending our very first Life Instyle trade show this July/August in Melbourne! Come and say hello!

Tell us a little bit about your businessChristian Cole Furniture is a multi award winning company which manufactures and designs exquisite customised solid timber furniture and architectural cabinetry using recycled or F.S.C. Certified timber. Made in Australia, all products are hand crafted using traditional joinery techniques. Christian Cole Furniture is dedicated to the preservation of the world’s environment and as such places a strong emphasis on the origins of the timber utilised in it’s business. Each piece is hand signed and dated and supported with a 25 Year Warranty.

glorious timberChristian and Fiona Cole celebrate the natural beauty of wood

and create stunning pieces that make a feature statement in any home

Where do you source your beautiful homewares products? And what is important to you when selecting these amazing products? We design and craft our own furniture and joinery. We also manufacture customised designs for both the residential and commercial sector.Rather than buy our timber from merchants we choose to source our own timber from various means. Directly from the farmer who may have a dead long laying on their property or a bridge demolisher who is replacing an historical bridge. We also retrieve timber from building sites when old buildings have been pulled down to make way for new dwellings.

Page 74: Winkelen magazine #2

<continued from previous page

The beauty of that is that the timber is seasoned perfectly for furniture and architectural joinery and we then know the wonderful story behind each piece of wood. For example the timber we acquired from the demolished Goulburn Wool Store which was built during the second World War to house the wool used which was sent offshore to manufacture most of the worlds soldiers uniforms and blankets etc.

How did you develop your interest in timber?Ironically prior to meeting we both loved working with timber furniture. Christian completing a furniture and cabinetry apprenticeship and myself buying second hand timber furniture and restoring it. Match made in heaven! Both of us love the outdoors and as children spent most of our time around nature. Christian surfed, fished and travelled around

Australia a great deal with his parents. He would collect driftwood from the beach and make stuff from it. I on the other hand grew up on a farm and spent many weekends planting trees for plantations and climbing them and making tree houses. Watching the stock shelter under the large Red Gums and the smaller animals making their homes in the trunks of the trees. Maybe that is why I love timber so much?

Can you give us some hot tips for styling and selecting furniture? Don’t be in a hurry and just buy something thinking, “That will do”. Be patient, do your research and decide upon something that you absolutely love and have a strong affinity with. After all, you’re going to be sharing your home with it hopefully forever! Keep the design simple, keeping in mind that circumstances in life change. People move

house, families grow and become smaller. People’s tastes can change over time. Choose a design that will never date and will always have a functional place in your home. We love sustainable sourced American Walnut. The colour is gorgeous and architecturally it lends itself to many home styles. For a lighter coloured, featured timber Wormy Chestnut is very popular.

Where do you shop for your homewares?Christian won’t let me buy furniture...... “No Fee I can make that for you!” Arggghhhh. He does make me whatever I want when we have the time. I love natural materials and textures. I place a great deal of emphasis on quality and uniqueness therefore saving up for those special pieces. It’s a huge bonus if I fall in love with something that is Australian designed and made. I do a great deal of my shopping online so Temple and Webster make regular deliveries to my

“We love experimenting with new joinery techniques for both ingenuity and for originality.”

house. There are always amazing brands and deals available. I’m in love with French Flax Linen and “Miss Molly” sell online. Diptique candles are my guilty pleasure. “Kleins Perfumery” in Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy are great for all candles and diffusers etc. I’ve left the best until last...... drum roll!!!! Safari Living in High Street Prahran. I love, love, love it. They have a great online shop also.

Tell us about yourselfBoth of us are very basic and have very basic needs. Christian never stops! His mind is always planning his next venture. We live for our two young sons! Max who is 11 and Will who is 8. They are both quite artistic and are forever creating “things”. We spend as much time as possible with each other. Each of us loves growing things and gardening, cooking and eating fresh food. We have chickens, vegie gardens, and a fruit

orchard at our factory. We are converting a 40 foot school bus into a motor home. Naturally there is some magnificent timber joinery being carried out. We are going with a Scandinavian theme because it is generally light in weight. We can go wherever we like then. Yay.

What inspires you in your designs?More often than none the actual timber itself. We look at the amount of grain, colour and dimensions and try to design something that will showcase those unique qualities ultimately. We are both very practical people so how the piece is to be used will also determine a great deal about how it will look aesthetically. If it is a commissioned piece then obviously the client’s home and personal taste will influence us. We love experimenting with new joinery techniques for both ingenuity and for originality. I think that has contributed to a proportion of our success.

Symmetry and balance are big factors also.

What is your favorite trend at the moment?Timber! We are so pleased that the uniqueness and warmth of timber is making its way back into people’s homes. Both architecturally and in stand-alone pieces of furniture. Having said that we are not big on “trend”. Personally if something is in trend we will diverge away from it designs wise. Trend can hide people’s true identities and that’s a shame.
