We Are Winnetonka more than 45 years ago, north Kansas city schools opened its third high school, Winnetonka. The building at 48th street and north Topping is home to an extraordinary group of students, teachers and staff who proudly represent Tonka nation.

In 1968, a committee convened to consider names for the new school. The top choices included Royalview, hilltop, hilldale and Winnetonka. Winnetonka was favored because of the romantic Indian sound and the positive beginning of the name, WInn-etonka. It would take more than two years, through strike-plagued labor and split-shift schedules with Oak Park, to open the school. On march 1, 1971, 34 teachers, two administrators, four secretaries, and a school nurse joined 600 sophomores to begin Winnetonka’s journey.

The cardinal Red and Gold of Winnetonka is a vital part of the school’s identity, and the school’s Griffin mascot – a legendary guardian of treasure – personifies a rich tradition of educational excellence. home to national merit scholars, award-winning theatre students, talented musicians, aspiring journalists and competitive athletes, Winnetonka has much of which to be proud.

situated high on a hilltop with a spectacular view of the Kansas city, missouri skyline, Winnetonka students, teachers and staff have a forward-looking outlook on the world. They are inspired by Winnetonka PRIDE – Prepared, Respectful, Involved, Driven and Engaged – to dream big, achieve much and lead their peers.

Winnetonka Griffins are strong, proud and true!
