Dear Esteemed Partners,

It is rightly said that “Customer satisfaction is important. Customer loyalty is priceless”. The success of a business depends on the ability of the organization to integrate customer service into it. This is a sure way to have loyal customers.

At the beginning of this year, we entered into a new phase of our strategy “Winning with Customers”, where you, our customer is the focal point. We win only when you win. At KONE, we strongly believe in that. It is important that we understand our customer needs and offer solutions & services which benefit them the most. We need to constantly innovate not just in products but processes and services too. As an organization, we are known for our quality in installation and service, which is our strength that we will constantly enhance to ensure we serve you better.

In today's fast changing and dynamic world, where the needs are changing every day, true service is what can help us differentiate in the market place. It helps in creating customer value. Along with service, technology will be able to deliver to you, our customer, solutions even before you know what you need. Our recent tie up with IBM will provide cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and services to drive innovation in smart buildings. KONE will tap into the IBM Watson IoT Cloud Platform to connect, remotely monitor and optimize its management of millions of elevators & escalators, doors & turnstiles in buildings and cities worldwide. KONE will be able to predict and resolve selected technical issues remotely by running tests and

making commands over the cloud. We can dramatically improve the reliability, the uptime of elevators and escalators, and bring a better experience, shorten journey times and improve the flow of people in big cities. Our differentiation will come from how we can best utilize the insights to improve service to our customers.

The partnership with IBM is expected to transform KONE's operations and technology capabilities over the next few years, which will improve the flow of urban life around the world.

In line with this, we held an industry first Hackathon early this year and I was amazed to see the number of registrations that we received. The ideas that were shared by the different teams on “Smart Elevators”, were totally innovative and we are happy that we are working with startups. It also helped us realize that there are so many new possibilities with the right use of technology. Going forward, technology will help us co-create with customers.

Though this year is challenging, I am quite sure that with the waning off impact of demonetization, the Real Estate industry is all set for a revival in the coming months. The Government has also taken a lot of new initiatives to ensure positivity, which has bettered the sentiments of both the developers and end users.

Envisage yourself standing on the first floor of a building and looking at the view. Now picture that you are up on the tenth floor and observing the same view. Needless to say, you will get an entirely new perspective. Your field of vision will be much wider and you will get to observe a lot more. The change we have visualised at KONE is something similar. We are taking a broader view. And looking at things from an outside in rather than an inside out perspective. Which means that our future outlook will be from the standpoint of our customers. Or, in short, from your point of view.

Let us take a step back to understand the trends that acted as a catalyst to this change.

Urbanization is no longer a myth. It is a reality that is rapidly changing the face of our cities and constantly changing the way we lead our lives. With more and more people moving to live in cities, vertical spaces are going to be the norm. Given this trend, our mission is to improve the flow of urban life. We aim to make cities better places to live in, by understanding People Flow and ensuring that people enjoy smooth, safe and convenient movement between buildings and urban spaces.

To offer customer-oriented solutions, we need to understand customer requirements well. We need to have a deep understanding of what you as a customer really need. Even the needs that are left unsaid.

Collaborative innovation and new competenciesAt every step of the way, we ask ourselves how we can improve our work. How can we learn to collaborate better with colleagues, teams, partners and customers? The tough questions we asked ourselves have encouraged us to collaborate internally, develop new skills and work together to arrive at solutions for you. We also introduced new initiatives like the KONE Hackathon which bring in fresh perspectives, highly innovative ideas and solutions.

Customer-centric solutions and servicesThis is our new mantra. We asked every employee, regardless of their role in the organization to think about how they can understand customer needs better. We also analysed how we can transform employee inputs into actions that can help us bring you better value.

True service mind-setWe stopped to analyse how you as a customer would interpret 'excellent service'. Is what we deliver on par with what you expect – at every level? How can we define 'true service' from a customer perspective and build it into our DNA?

Fast and smart execution

Our new strategy puts you - our customer - at the center of everything we do. Hence it was imperative that we device new approaches and alter the way we arrive at solutions. The change, we realised, must come from within. Our systems, our ways to thinking and functioning must change for us to meet this fantastic new goal. We dived deep within and came up with four strategic paths that will lead us to effective solutions.

In our fast paced, urban life, optimal use of time is vital. We analysed how we can shorten our service response time. We also asked ourselves which are the jobs that take longer to complete and why. In future, we will rely more and more on technology to enable smoother People Flow. Our collaboration with IBM is one such example. We will be using IBM's technology and expertise to harness the potential of digitalization and the Internet of Things (IoT). We will also use the IBM Watson IoT Cloud platform to collect and store equipment data and use advanced analytics to build applications and develop new solutions.

In addition, our emphasis on quality and safety will continue unabated. We set ourselves a high benchmark on these two aspects and ensure that we live up to it – no matter how big or small the project. Quality and safety audits are performed at every stage of a project and if anomalies are found, corrections are made right there before work progresses to the next stage. This ensures that the end-product that you receive will offer you a smooth and safe ride.

Our stress on safety is further reinforced by the safety weeks we celebrate at a national and global level.

During these weeks, we conduct activities and events that reiterate our emphasis on safety. We believe that by doing so, our focus on safety will percolate down to not only to our employees, but also to our customers and will become a habit in every aspect of their lives too.

With these effective paths in place and the

new wave of thinking that has been embedded

in our organization, we hope to continue

walking down the winning path. With you.

Ideas galore at India's first elevator industry Hackathon

8 9

INNOVATIVE IDEA In yet another first, KONE in association with IBM hosted the first-ever Elevator Industry Hackathon in India. Powered by the IBM Watson loT Platform, the goal of the hackathon was to encourage developers to come up with ideas for smart elevators to enhance user safety & experience. This unique initiative is in sync with our new

strategy of Winning with Customers. “Collaborative

innovation and new competencies” is one of the paths we have identified to achieve our goal. It is part of our ongoing search for new tech solutions, revolutionary ideas and suggestions which can all add up to give you a better customer experience.

KONE India Hackathon served as a platform for young talent and encouraged them to share their ideas. Indeed the focus of this hackathon was to bring two worlds together - KONE's long history of innovation & expertise and combine it with fresh ideas from the outside.

The theme for our Hackathon was - “Smart Elevator Challenge”. It brought together a large pool of Developers with the aim of fostering Digital Innovation. The Hackathon is part of our broader plan to improve flow of urban life through a mix of Technology,

The recently concluded panel discussion on the Internet of Things: New Age Digital Opportunities in Mumbai, revealed an amazing world of possibilities! The panel, presented by Vodafone Business Services in association with The Economic Times, attracted top minds from sectors as varied as Telecom, FMCG, Banking, Automobiles and Consumer Durables. It offered a ring side view of how promoters and chief executives are eyeing the future, impact of IoT-driven automation on industries, and most tellingly, getting real with IoT.

Amit Gossain, MD, KONE India, who was part of the eminent panel, shared some out-of-the-box ideas that KONE plans to explore.

Getting real with IoT

Research, Market Knowledge and Out of the box ideas. Our association with IBM also ensured that we derive real time insights based on rules, which developers can leverage to build intelligent elevator solutions.

The first phase of the event started with an online registration which commenced in December 2016. When registrations closed in February 2017, over 2300 enthusiasts from across India had registered for this challenge! During the second phase of the event, scheduled between February 18 – 26, 2017 in Bengaluru and Chennai, the top 60 shortlisted teams were invited to develop and present their ideas. In the third phase, held on March 4th 2017, the top 14 teams demonstrated the integration of their prototypes with real elevators at the Chennai R&D Centre (India Technology & Engineering Centre).

Faster & Smarter execution with tech tools

INTELLIGENT COMMUNICATION

Winning with customers is the way forward for us at KONE. At every step we analyse how we can bring you faster and smarter solutions. Technological advancements and our own intensive R&D helps us arrive at customer-friendly solutions. Our new DT6 tool is one such example.

DT6 is an intelligent, blue tooth enabled tool that can be connected to the KONE SAP platform through an android application. In the past, the installation teams had to take the readings, return to office, make their calculations and then go back to the site to do modifications, if required. Now, just by placing it on the elevator floor, the DT6 measures the vibration levels and immediately uploads the readings to SAP. Any deviation can be analysed and corrective measures can be taken right there at the site.

Irrespective of the location of the installation site, the

DT6 tool calculates the installation quality and precision

vibration levels at the site, saving precious time for

supervisors and sub-contractors. It offers a better

customer experience not only in terms of assured ride

comfort, but also in better quality installation.

While the KONE DT6 tool enhances the speed and

efficiency of the installation and audit teams, the KONE

Field Mobility Tool (KFM) serves as a boon for the

service personnel. KONE Field Mobility (KFM) is yet

another digital tool that makes the everyday work of

our service field staff smarter, easier and more

productive. It is a digital solution loaded on an android

device that saves precious time, increases transparency

and enables peace of mind to customers and users.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT

TMKONE N MiniSpace smart, sustainable solutions

What made you opt for KONE elevators?

My association with KONE started in 2001. You see, I have been in the construction business for 40+ years now. Earlier I worked with another elevator company. Their product was good, but I was not happy with their service. That's when KONE approached me. They assured me of good service and I said ok let me give it a try. I'm so happy that I made that decision!

Did KONE measure up to your expectations?

Oh yes. For sure. The first assignment I gave KONE was about 3-4 elevators for a commercial project. And today over a 1000 KONE elevators are operational in my projects. The numbers speak for themselves. That is how satisfied I am with their service.

Do they go the extra mile?

Most companies feel that their job is done once the sale is over. But I tell you, after sales service is even more important. This is where KONE goes the extra mile. Their response time is fantastic. They don't mind coming at odd hours to help us out of our difficulties. The technical team is really knowledgeable. They are courteous and thorough professionals.

Any special incidents?

I remember one particular instance. The elevator had a problem at night and there was a function in the morning. So I called the service person and told them the criticality of the situation. The person from KONE came at 9 pm – which is well after working hours and set it right. This kind of service we do not get with any other elevator company.

Can you elaborate on KONE's service strengths?

I would say KONE is an organization with a true service mindset. Whenever I put in a service request they are on the job within an hour. Their service assurance is not mere words, they actually do what they promise. That to a customer is very reassuring. I know that if there is problem, I just have to call and they will sort it out. This sense of complete trust is only because of their superior service levels.

Any message for those reading this magazine?

Well, I recommend KONE to all my friends and associates, so I'm going to tell the readers to go with KONE! I'm very impressed with them. Because, at the cost of repeating myself, I must say that you will not find their level of service with anyone else.

Change, as they say, is the only constant. This is indeed a way of life at KONE. Once we have a successful, established product in the market, we don't leave it at that. Our team is constantly monitoring customer needs and evolving market requirements. Armed with this knowledge, we are always looking at ways to upgrade our products to offer you the best experience. The KONE N MiniSpace is a classic example. Launched in 2012, KONE N MiniSpace was designed to provide the ideal people flow solutions for modern, intelligent buildings.

As urban India continues to grow and bourgeon, the need to enhance people flow movement is constant and immediate. We incorporated valuable feedback received from customers and have recently relaunched the KONE N MiniSpace.

The new KONE N MiniSpace is designed especially for residential and commercial buildings where safety and space optimization are key requirements. As urban India is moving increasingly towards vertical spaces, the KONE N MiniSpace has been made more suitable for taller buildings. It can now travel up to a maximum of 135 m (as against 100 m earlier) and has an increased speed of 2.5 m/s, to ensure smoother and faster people flow.

KONE N MiniSpace is already popular for its award winning design. Customers have a choice of several visually appealing designs, innovative materials and lighting solutions, plus a fantastic choice of accessories.

Some notable features of the KONE N MiniSpace include:

¡ Best in class ride comfort¡ Daily automatic brake testing¡ Proven rope technology¡ A curtain of light to ensure safe entry and exit¡ Accurate landing that eliminates risk of tripping

REGENERATIVE DRIVE TECHNOLOGY

KONE N MiniSpace™ is not just people flow friendly, but also extremely eco-friendly. KONE's regenerative drive technology converts the excess energy generated by an elevator into electricity that can be reused elsewhere in the building. A regenerative drive has a substantial impact on an elevator's energy consumption – it can in fact cut energy consumption up to 20%. KONE Customer Care Centre that ensures

Equipping one of the world's largest infrastructure projects.

A SAFETY WAVE

14 15

As an organization that believes in providing smooth People Flow in an increasingly urban world, we are thrilled to have procured an order at one of the world's largest infrastructure projects – Riyadh Metro. KONE will supply 418 elevators and escalators for the line 3 of Riyadh Metro in the capital of Saudi Arabia which is commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA). KONE will equip Riyadh's metro line 3 which is the longest out of the 6 lines in the project stretching along a 41 km spread across 22 stations. The order comprises 262 KONE escalators and 156 KONE elevators of which 96 will be scenic. The solutions will be equipped with KONE E-Link monitoring systems. The line is expected to be in operation by the end of this decade.

Focused Safety Audits across IndiaAt KONE, safety is a way of life. Our maxim is safety for everyone. Safety everywhere. Safety in everything we do. As a part of our global safety initiative, the Global and Asia Pacific (APA) team together conducted safety audits across Asia Pacific region to ensure that all compliances and safety processes were in place. The APA Safety Wave in India took place simultaneously at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and NCR. The safety wave was steered by the top management from our India, Asia Pacific and Global Offices. The audit teams also met customers who appreciated the service rendered by KONE. It was a thrilling moment for us when customers enunciated that they opted for KONE vis-a-vis competitors, because they were impressed with our service and safety records.

The story at each of the sites was just delightful as our fitters and technicians were ready with all the answers. It was heartening to note that they had strictly followed all the processes including - regular tool box meetings, compliance to all safety procedures and display of good visual signages among others. This was indeed a clear indication of our commitment towards safety.

Apart from recording their observations at the site, the safety auditors also gathered feedback from the installation teams, sub-contractor and service teams to see how and what was required to improve safety standards. Their feedback is extremely valuable as they have deep knowledge of the ground realities.

The input will be used to formulate necessary action plans that can help us work safer. This is the start for many more such initiatives that would drive and strengthen the safety culture in our organization. So that we in-turn can offer you safer solutions.

CSR INITIATIVE

KCF & KONE India Adopt 20 villages

Did you know that only 53% of the habitation in India has a primary school and only 20% has a secondary school? Statistics also show alarming dropout rates amongst children between class III and V. It is as high as 58% amongst girls and 50% amongst boys.

We stopped to analyse why.

Most of these children from rural areas are first generation learners. Often children struggle to cope with subjects and they have no one to turn to for help. This factor, coupled with day to day financial struggles, forces children to drop out of school. We at KONE believe that education opens doors to better opportunities and every child must be empowered by knowledge. This is why KONE Centennial Foundation (KCF), and KONE India support the Single Teacher Schools initiative run by Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society, a not-for-profit Society. KONE has adopted 20 villages in rural areas of Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. The villages and teachers are identified by the NGO (Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society).

KONE – Committed to a bettertomorrow

Single Teacher Schools is a unique concept that is being implemented at elementary school level in lot of villages – with the support of the village Panchayat. Single Teacher Schools act as educational support. They are supplementary schools that are run after school hours – mostly between 4 pm – 7 pm. Under-privileged children ranging from 5 – 16 years attend this school and they are coached in the 5 core subjects – English, Tamil, Mathematics, Science and Environmental Studies. These subjects are handled by one teacher who explains and clears any doubts that the children may have. The teacher is chosen from among the village community. He or she is a graduate from the village with a passion to teach and interact with children. Since the teacher is one among them, the children are also comfortable about asking their doubts and interacting with him/her.

KONE does not stop with mere dispersal of funds, but also monitors the children's educational level and ensures that they have everything they need to support their education.

Through this initiative, we hope to reduce the drop-out rates among children and guide them on the path to a better tomorrow.

Winning an award is always a gratifying experience. It reinforces the faith in ourselves and assures us that we are moving in the right direction.

The Construction, Infrastructure Architect world (CIA) - part of EPIC Media, service provider of architectural & construction services, recently celebrated their 5th year anniversary. As a part of the celebrations, they recognized companies that contributed towards the construction & infrastructure development of India.

An award ceremony was held at The Grand Hyatt, Mumbai on Dec 23rd 2016, where we had the honour for being adjudged as the national level Winner under the category BEST COMPANY IN ELEVATORS AND ESCALATORS in India. The fact that the award was decided upon by an eminent jury panel makes it even more special. The award was received by Amit Gossain, Managing Director, KONE India; along with senior team members from Mumbai.

Decoding the connected world

Our aim is to understand customer requirements so well, that we deliver solutions to them, even before they realise the need. Is such a thing possible? Yes! Technology can help make this next level of innovation a reality. Today elevators are fitted with sensors. Decoding the data collected by these sensors can give us amazing insights into customer requirements.

The need to manage, understand and analyse this constant stream of data is the driving force behind KONE's collaboration with IBM. We will use IBM's IoT and cloud development platforms to gather data from various sensors and systems connected to KONE's elevators, escalators, doors and turnstiles used by around a billion people each day.

OPENING NEW DOORS FOR CUSTOMERSBeing able to resolve potential problems before they occur is one of the areas where new types of predictive services will come into play.

Thanks to the IBM partnership, KONE plans to encourage a vast developer ecosystem by opening Application Programming Interfaces (API's) which means new applications can be built and different types of equipment and services can be connected – creating a smoother, safer and more personalized people flow experience for building users.

Suffice to say, the partnership with IBM is expected to transform KONE's operations and technology capabilities over the next few years, which will improve the flow of urban life around the world.

IBM's Watson platform uses natural language processing and machine learning to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data.

THE TECH ADVANTAGETechnology will help engineers understand in advance when an elevator may need servicing, or when some part needs to be replaced. In short, it can enable predictive maintenance.

People's journey in buildings will be personalized, faster, secure and better. Putting a flexible platform in place means the list of potential benefits is only limited by the customers' imagination.

“By utilizing the Watson IOT platform, we can dramatically improve the reliability, the uptime of elevators and escalators, and bring a better experience, shorten journey times and improve the flow of people in big cities. Our differentiation will come from how we can best utilize the insights to improve our service to our customers.”

Antti Koskelin, CIO, KONE

“A quick win for building managers is to figure out which floors of a building may need elevators waiting in advance at certain times of day.”
