THE CATATONIA EXPRESSED

As though life’s not hard enough adjusting to all the benefits of contemporary society – the plasma screen, instantinformation from the internet, music at the press of a button, global travel, and all else I’ve come to expect – now I have tore-adjust. I knew there were some problems that had to be faced sometime, but all of a sudden they are upon me!

Shortages of clean air, clean food, fuel, water, space, democratic rights, privacy, income, you name it: it’s enough to haveme AAAARRRRGGGGHH!!!!! running screaming into the sunset. I’m so confused by all the expert advice I’m gettingfrom gurus in every possible field of specialization that I’ll probably take the wrong direction and head eastwards into theHarbour.

What to do? Who to believe? How to prioritise? Will I have time to make any difference? And if I try to do the right thing, will some new expert in their 15-minute-grab render my effort useless anyway? The pressure. The pressure. It’s enough toroot me to the spot. And there, I’ve stumbled into the survival situation for many living beings: flee or stay motionless, except that this state of stillness is closer to catatonia than to watchful alertness!

I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’m just going to do some small things, some of the time. Grow a few vegies, use a bitless electricity –switch off lights and appliances, as long as doing so doesn’t throw their delicate mechanisms intoparoxysms of unfathomable malfunction – use a bit less petrol (ah, me poor old pegs), check out the labels on themerchandise a bit more carefully, consider local food buying: all of which I do some of now. And I’m saving paper andenergy with this half-sized catalogue, hoping you will access backlist and other titles on my website. But I can’t becomerabid about any of it – calmness is important. And I’ve realized that five steps forward and four steps back is OK.Particularly if I have my dancing shoes on.

Best,
