Maybe you have never been to church, been attending all your life, or you are just getting back into it after a long break. Wherever you are in your journey, we are praying you find a place to call home and, more importantly, a relationship with Jesus Christ.

To that end, we want to offer you some insight into Gateway’s church family and information you will hopefully find helpful in taking the key steps needed to connect with your brothers and sisters in Christ here.

- Pastor Karl

If it is God’s will, over the next 5 years we will see 500 baptized into Christ and added to God’s family. This is our goal. If each one of us leads ONE person to Jesus Christ in the next 5 years—we will be living out God’s passion to seek and save the lost. We must be a church driven with a desire to lead people to Jesus. Inviting our family, friends, coworkers, classmates, and neighbors into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ is why God established His Church.

This vision will require fervent prayer, a united church, and a servant’s heart. This vision will impact our personal lives and the life of Gateway.

The different stages of a tree are great pictures of what it means to be transformed into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. In one year we can see a tree change through different seasons—blossoming, becoming strong and full, and eventually bearing fruit. You, as part of God’s church, can be vibrant with new life, full of sustaining growth, and yielding the fruit of God’s work in your life. At each stage of this personal transformation process, we offer a course and a decision on your part to go deeper in your relationship with Christ.

Live For Christ is for those who are considering making Jesus Christ their Lord and/or making Gateway their church home (also open to members who have not yet taken the course). This class is being offered on Sunday, December 18, January 29, and February 26, from 9:00-10:30 a.m. during first service.*

Grow In Christ, the second course, is open to those who have completed the Live for Christ course. This is the right class for those who are ready to step up to the next level in their spiritual maturity. It is offered every other month, with the next offerings during the first worship service on Sunday, December 4, and February 12, from 9:00-10:30 a.m.*

Serve Like Christ is our third course in the series. This class helps you identify and use the gifts and talents that God has given you in the right ministry area that fits you. If you have completed the Live for Christ and Grow in Christ courses, this is the next step. This class will be offered on Sunday, January 15, from 9:00-10:30 a.m. during first service.*

*Sign-up sheets for all three courses can be found on the ministry table in the Information Hallway.

Just as everyone matures at different growth rates physically, we all go through different stages of spiritual growth. Our desire is for you to continue growing in your understanding of who God is, deepening your relationship with Him. All are welcome to try any Gateway Growth Group on Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and/or home group meeting throughout the week.

Early Sunday Morning S.U.B.M.I.T. (Supporting Underground Believers/Martyrs In Trials) Teacher: Ashley Jeralds

What does it mean to be persecuted for your faith? Is persecution the same in every country? Every month we focus on a different country, learning about the culture, religion, government, and persecution believers experience there, and pray for them. As we travel the world you will find faith, strength, encouragement, and hope from the testimonies of believers as we share in their victories and their suffering. (Note: graphic content about persecution may be shared.) S.U.B.M.I.T. meets before worship services on the 1st Sunday of the month from 8:00-8:50 A.M. for study and on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 8:15-8:45 A.M. for prayer, so you can join us and then go to a 3G group or worship service afterward.

9:00 A.M.

Logos Teachers: Jim Kremer & Tom Harland After finishing our current study of “Crazy Love” and what it means to have crazy love for Christ, we will be studying the book of Colossians, in which we will read and discuss how Christ meets all of our needs. Winter 2011-12 Study: Crazy Love & Book of Colossians

Seekers Teachers: Tony Hartsfield & Julian Cosentino Do you often feel you are a person of doubt, rather than a person of faith? Or do you struggle with how to put your faith into action? Join us as we learn from some of the great heroes of our faith how to become more faithful ourselves. We will look at God’s covenant, His protection, and His redemption plan. Winter 2011-12 Study: God Establishes A Faithful People (Genesis & Galatians)

Women’s Group Teachers: Paula Reed & Elaine Lewallen We will view the movie, “The Nativity,” during the month of December. Then we will be doing a study of the five most common lies that have the potential to ruin relationships with those we love. There is power in knowing and applying God’s truth to our relationships. Winter 2011-12 Study: The Nativity & Five Lies That Ruin Relationships (study of James)

Young Adults Teacher: Jennifer Chesnutt The Young Adults course is a great discussion course. We have discussed what the Bible says about dating, sharing our faith story, worldviews, and why we can trust the Bible to be true. This quarter we delve into a New Testament book to learn more about how to be a Christian in today’s world. Come join us as we dig deeper into these familiar scriptures! Winter 2011-12 Study: Book of the New Testament Pg 6

Page 8: Winter 2011-12 - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/gatewaychristianchurch2...Dr. Gary hapman’s bestselling book, “The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts,” explains

10:30 A.M. Carpe Diem Teachers: Bjorn Thommesen & Barry Jeralds Have you ever wished you could see scripture come to life? Wondered how Jesus’ spoken words would have sounded to those who heard them? Join us for a study of the book of John from a unique perspective: a DVD movie that follows the gospel account word for word and offers us a visual perspective on the greatest story ever told. Winter 2011-12 Study: The Gospel of John

Marriages In Motion Teachers: Jon & Colleen Marble, Dan & Paulette Limbaugh Marriages may be made in heaven, but they must be nurtured here on earth. Dr. Gary Chapman’s bestselling book, “The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts,” explains how people communicate love in different ways and explores what can happen when spouses learn to speak each other’s love language. These ideas can also transform other relationships in your life (parent, adult child, coworker, ministry leader, etc.) Winter 2011-12 Study: The Five Love Languages

Servants of God Teachers: John Kiso, John & Angie Turigliatto Join us as we study the Bible and see Christ’s words lived out today. We begin our lessons by preparing for Jesus, joining in His birth, and then witnessing His miracles. Each week we will discuss how The Word is active in our lives today. Our lessons parallel the children’s ministry, allowing you to connect with your child’s lesson each week. We are following a three-year complete study of the Bible. Whether you are new to the Bible or a scholar, this class has something for you as we study, fellowship, and pray for each other. Join us as we serve our mighty and great God together. Winter 2011-12 Study: Jesus’ Life: Impossible Birth to Amazing Miracles

NOTE: You are welcome to participate in any course that interests you. If you have questions about the course’s content or would like more details, please contact individual teachers/facilitators through the church office.

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

Small Groups meet in homes, at church, in coffee shops, or workplaces in order to do life together. For someone seeking truth, it is a safe place to ask questions about who Jesus is, why He came, and what He desires from us. For a Christ follower, it is one of the most effective places to grow. A group can range from 4 to 16 people—all there to build accountable relationships and friendships. The goal of every Small Group is to help you grow in Christ by discovering real friendships, deep faith, and authentic community.

How do I get into a group? If you are attending Gateway, joining a small group is a great next step to growing in Christ. We have groups meeting all over St. Louis throughout the week. The church office has contact information for each of these groups:

Arnold Group (Facilitators: Danny Nelson & Rob Ladage) Meets Sundays at 6:00 p.m.; currently studying a “Faith Series,” by Ray Vander Laan, one on the promised land and the other on death and resurrection (childcare available).

Ballwin Group (Facilitators: Bjorn & Lore Thommesen) Meets Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.; currently studying “Crazy Love,” by Francis Chan, on God’s call to have a passionate love relationship with Him.

Chesterfield Group (Facilitators: Jon & Colleen Marble) Meets on Monday nights at 6:00 p.m. for potluck dinner and fellowship; currently studying the book of 1 Samuel (childcare available as needed).

Creve Coeur Group (Facilitator: Josh Hough) Meets every other Thursday night at 6:30 p.m; currently studying “Prodigal God” (childcare available).

Eureka Group (Facilitators: Mike & Jenni Biggs) Meets Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.; currently studying “Heaven,” by Randy Alcorn.

O’Fallon Group (Facilitators: Brian & Jen Johnson) Meets Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.; currently studying Christian living, or how to be a better spouse, parent, employee, and overall Christian (childcare available).

Young Adults Group (Contact Person: Jennifer Chesnutt) The young adult group meets every other Friday at 7:00 p.m. for prayer, food, fellowship, and fun. Location and facilitator rotates each week; contact Jennifer to get involved or find out more details.

How do I start a group in my home? Make arrangements with the 3G Team through Pastor Karl. Contact the church office to set up a time to discuss your plans.

The Children’s Ministry is made up of many volunteers, many programs, and lots of kids from nursery-age through 5th grade. All our activities take place in the Children’s Center.

Shepherd’s Pasture Nursery Ministry—A nursery for infants up to 2 years old is staffed during both services on Sunday and during Wednesday Nite Life programs.

Shepherd’s Park Preschool Ministry (2-5 Year Olds) Sunday morning activities are held during both the 9:00 and 10:30 services. These include an opportunity for worship, hearing and experiencing Bible stories, lesson-related crafts and snacks, and time to relax and play with other children.

Wednesday Nite Life Preschool Programs (September-May) Li’l Lambs is for children 2 years old to those who turn 4 years old after November 30. The children have story time, crafts, and other activities to enhance the Bible lesson. Parent volunteers assist the teacher in whatever area needed. Shepherd’s Lambs is for children who are 4 years old by November 30 through Kindergarten. We also welcome children who may be in first grade but will not be 6 years old until after November 30. Activities include learning God’s word through music, Bible stories, crafts, and other fun activities. The group performs periodically in the adult worship services.

Pursuit Elementary Ministry (Kindergarten-5th Grade) Sunday morning activities are held during both the 9:00 and 10:30 services. God Pursuit (Children’s Church) is a worship service designed with elementary kids in mind, filled with lively music, and a Bible lesson taught on the kids’ level. We also have communion and collect offering just like the adults each Sunday. Kindergarten-2nd grades worship at 9:00; 3rd-5th grades worship at 10:30. Bible Pursuit (Sunday School) is held at 9:00 for 3rd-5th grades and at 10:30 for Kindergarten-2nd grades.

Our teen area is called The Warehouse. The Warehouse is where we have relevant conversations about God moving in teenage lives. Everything we do here is designed to reach middle school and high school students where they are in life.

On Sunday mornings, we meet in The Warehouse for Collide Deep at 9:00 a.m. where we dive into God’s Word.

On Wednesday nights, we meet for Collide Live at 6:30 p.m. where we learn how to put Biblical principles into our lives.

During the 9:00 a.m. Sunday worship service, teens gather together in The Warehouse to dive deeper into God’s Word to learn how to grow in their relationship with Christ. Join other students your age in a conversation that is started straight from the Bible and led by an adult who will guide the conversation and pray one-on-one with you.

This is a great place to be on Sunday morning. We are going through a curriculum that will have us reading through the entire Bible over a 4-year time period. Join us each week as we learn about our great God through His Word.

During the school year, we pack The Warehouse with teens starting at 6:30 pm and we worship our God. This is where we learn Biblical principles to live by and learn to be fully devoted followers of Christ through teaching and relevant videos or dramas. Each Wednesday night COLLIDE LIVE includes hang time, small groups, and worship for middle school and high school students. We also have a couple of service projects planned during the semester to allow students the opportunity to share Christ’s love through an act of service in our community.

Our teens enjoy participating in SHINE, Gateway’s music and drama group for this age group through college. Practices are on Wednesday nights from 6:00-6:30 pm during the school year, just before COLLIDE LIVE. See Laura Fletcher for details.

Teens and sponsors love to interact with each other outside of the church. In addition to individuals meeting for accountability and prayer, we will go on various trips during the upcoming months in larger groups.

WINTER SPECIAL EVENTS This winter we will have a Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 5. Be watching for details as we approach the date.

SPRING PURITY RETREAT Remain, our Purity Retreat, will be held March 8-10 here at Gateway. This will be an unforgettable weekend, causing you to ponder what the Bible says about your relationship with the opposite sex.

SUMMER TRIPS The following trips are planned for the summer quarter:

Junior/Senior Trip: June 1-2. See Josh for more details as the dates approach.

Middle School students will attend High Hill Christian Camp the week of July 22-27. Plan to come to an incredible “week-of-all-weeks” to grow closer to God, develop new friendships, and have fun—all at the same time!! More details available in the spring.

High School students will go to Holland, Michigan, to participate in this year’s CIY MOVE conference, held June 25-30. Incoming 8th graders are welcome!

OTHER TRIPS As specifics are finalized for each of the following, they will be communicated to teens and parents:

Service Opportunities

Campus visits

Weekend conference at a Bible College

We currently meet twice a month on Sunday evenings, with a worship night the 2nd Sunday of the month, and a “get to know” night on the 4th Sunday. We hope you will come get acquainted with other peers and be encouraged. For more information, please send an email to [email protected].

Page 15: Winter 2011-12 - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/gatewaychristianchurch2...Dr. Gary hapman’s bestselling book, “The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts,” explains

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8

At Gateway, we need everybody’s help in order to serve like Christ–including yours. Many of us come to Gateway with a background of skills and interests (music, drama, construction, food, technical, computers, sports, etc.) that can be used to help others. Whether you are brand new to church, or a mature believer, there are volunteer opportunities where you can serve. Please keep in mind though, that because Gateway exists to “Live for Christ, Grow in Christ, and Serve like Christ,” it is essential that people seeking to volunteer must first be committed to that end. Some of the opportunities to serve have requirements due to the nature of the role and its direct influence on individuals in God’s church. We look forward to helping you discover how God has wired you to Serve Like Christ.

The church was always meant to serve the community in which it finds itself. For Gateway, this is greater St. Louis—North, South, and West County. Because we desire to see people in our city experience Christ’s love firsthand, we deliberately pursue key partnerships with ministries through which to share this love. There are many needs—physical, relational, emotional, financial, and spiritual—and it is our calling to meet those needs like Christ. Angel Tree Ministry (through Salvation Army) We invite Gateway families to adopt needy St. Louis children at Christmas time and bring gifts to church for them. Armed Forces Care We send care packages to any Gateway family member serving in the military in the U.S. or overseas around Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, in addition to sending birthday cards and notes to help them stay connected to their church family. Bread Basket Food Pantry We provide food, paper products, and toiletries for those in need, in our church family and our community, helping fill the shelves of greater St. Louis area food pantries. High Hill Christian Camp Work Day www.highhillcamp.org We support High Hill Camp through a yearly workday, doing major renovation projects, as well as clean-up and minor repairs, to prepare for summertime.
