State of the WardBy Alderman Sposato
Dear Friend,
As we enter this Holiday Season and I complete my first six months
as the 36th Ward Alderman I want to take this opportunity to update
you on events that have taken place in our community. When I
decided to run for Alderman I promised if elected we would create a
new system of open and accessible government for the 36th Ward.
Over the course of the last six months we have started implementing
a new form of community government that has had a real effect on
the neighborhoods and people throughout our community.
On May 16th we opened our new 36th Ward Community Service
Office located at 6934 W Diversey. We have been running full steam
ever since. I want to give credit to my 36th Ward office staff and to
our 36th Ward Streets & Sanitation staff who have done a remarkable
job in hitting the ground running and ensuring that our office has been
accessible. We have been striving to provide top notch service to the
constituents of the ward. Providing accessibility to me and my office
staff is one of the steps I have taken to deliver on my promise of
opening up our ward government to the community.
A major part of my new ideas for representative government for the
36th ward was to create several advisory committees that would
provide me with community input on issues involving our Parks,
Schools, Libraries, Crime, and other community development issues.
Over the course of the last six months we have been signing up
residents that want to participate and the advisory committees are
now meeting once a month to discuss the issues they feel we should
be focusing on in our ward. This has been a tremendous asset to me
providing an insight into different areas of our community.
In addition to advisory committees I have made other steps to include
as many people as possible in our Ward Government. I launched
www.aldermansposato.coma new 36th ward website, created a
system of email blasts to update residents on what we are doing both
at 6934 W Diversey and down in City Hall, we have started
communicating through Facebook, and started a series of community
town hall meetings. The response from the community has been
remarkable. State of the Ward continues on page 3

Winning at Recycling, Again
By: Tom Drebenstedt
In 2010, we participated in
the Citys paper recycling
drive and won recognition.
This year, the Department of Environment
announced another challenge and once again, we
competed. Galewood Residents Organization
(GRO) worked with Shriners Hospitals for Children
who graciously lent space to park our container-
and for two weeks watched our neighbors fill it. InSeptember, the announcement came that we
placed ninth in the city, turning in 2,600 pounds of
waste paper. The top nine community organizations
collected 39,000 pounds, while the next fifteen
collected 13,000. Many thanks to all that helped
GRO with this years recycling challenge.
Garden Club Galewood MontclareBy: Tom Drebenstedt
Our September meeting was a well-attended workshop and group
discussion focused on tool care. Master Gardener Don Nekrosius led a very informative session, guiding and
entertaining us as we all cleaned and sharpened our favorite tool. The cloudy skies opened up, we ran to the garage
for shelter, and Don continued to share stories about old tools and urban farming. Send a request to us at
[email protected] and well forward you the days informative handout.
October and November had us putting two gardens to rest for the winter season ahead. Many hands always make a
task easier. The Park District provided rich mulch for our community garden at Rutherford Sayre and then the next
month, Joe Capobianco, creator of the award winning garden adjacent to Montclare Station, appreciated our helpinghands.
Its time to take a break and revel in the seasonal colors and textures. Dont forget to mulch your leaves and feed the
birds while you await our next event in early February. Join our conversation on Facebook, or call Tom at
773-909-0899 to receive club news. There are many Galewood projects to involve yourself in. Join our e-list for the
specific dates and topics; we love to see new faces and expand our circle of knowledge.
Galewood Residents Organization
(GRO) By: Kelly Higgins-Turner
Galewood Residents Organization is hosting a Holiday
Potluck December 10th at the Galewood Community
Church from 5pm 8pm. This is the second year we have
held this event, and we hope it is as successful as last
year. There will be music, crafts, and more. Please plan to
join us with a food dish - all are welcome. RSVP
[email protected] if you will attend.
To help with future activities, we would love to have more
input from the community. Galewood is a great place to
live, and your ideas will help make it even better.
Please plan to join us on the second Thursday of each
month at the Galewood Community Church, 1776
Narragansett at 7pm.

A quarterly community newsletter for the Chicago neighborhood of Galewood
State of the Ward continued from page 1When given the chance to have a voice in the direction of our community, 36th Ward residents haven't hesitated to step up and
get involved. Our town hall meetings have been averaging between 75-100 people but a few of our meetings have drawn
crowds that reached 200-300. I have heard from several members of our community that they like the meetings but feel that
there should be better follow up information provided. That is why in the coming weeks I will be adding an area to our website
that will contain my decisions on many of the issues discussed in these meetings. Communication and information is essential
to our partnership.
Changing the culture of government in the 36th ward has not been the only challenge we have been faced with over the last few
months. For many years the City has looked to one time fixes to address fiscal problems, only to see them come back worse a
few years later. We needed to change how this city was operating! This years budget negotiations were historic for a number
of reasons 1) the City has never been faced with such economic difficulties and 2) the new City Council and Mayor needed to
figure out how to work together to address these issues. Mayor Emanuels original budget proposal contained $6.3 million
dollars in cuts for the Library system, Health Care, Graffiti removal crews, and front line public safety operations at the 911 call
center. In response to issues raised by myself and other members of the Progressive Caucus Mayor Emanuel agreed to
restore $4.3 million in cuts he had proposed including $3.3 million that will prevent 100 planned layoffs and allow the libraries to
maintain their six day-a-week schedule during summer months and other holidays when school is out. While this budget was
far from ideal it addressed the dire fiscal situation and didnt kick the can down the road. Although we had to make some tough
decisions the choices we made this year will prevent even larger cuts in the future and help get our city back on track.
As we move forward into the winter months I would like to encourage you to take a minute each day to check on any elderly or
disabled neighbors. Last year we saw this city come together as one community to help each other through the blizzard and I
hope we can continue that spirit of cooperation this year.
I promise that as long as I serve as your Alderman I will continue to strive to provide you with a voice in our ward's direction. Do
not ever hesitate to contact me at (773) 836-0036 [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you! It is my
honor and privilege to serve you. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Sposato

Rutherford Sayre Park
Advisory Council Wins AwardBy: Tom Drebenstedt
On November 13, at historic Douglas Park, a Volunteer
Awards Reception was held and our Park Advisory
Council (PAC) was honored. The award was presented
by Friends of the Parks, an independent nonprofit
organization that assists community oversight to the Park
and Forest Preserve Districts.
Our PAC has succeeded in getting a new playgroundconstructed, beginning a mosaic to cover the walls of the
Metra tunnel, engaging the Garden Clubs stewardship of
the communitygarden, and continuing to captain Earth
Day activities. We are now surveying neighbors - have
you participated? - to enhance park programming as well
as surveying the physical needs of our historic field
house. Dont forget about the Nature Garden, south of the
tracks, we need some help with that.
Join the conversation at our park Facebook page or cometo our next PAC meeting on Wednesday, December 7, at
6:30 pm, in the field house.

Competitive Weightlifting Program at Rutherford-Sayre ParkBy: Maureen Connell
The competitive weightlifting program at Rutherford-Sayre Park has been revived in
the last couple of years, thanks in large part to the hard work of Kevin Holbrook.
Since 2009, Kevins been dedicating his time, energy and fundraising efforts tobringing the weightlifting program closer to what it was at its peak in the 1970s, 1980s, and the early 1990s.
Kevin Holbrook is pretty new to the world of weightlifting, but its in his blood, a part of his history. His dad, Tom
Holbrook, and his uncle, Rick Holbrook, were legendary weightlifters back in the 1960s and 1970s. Both men were
mentioned in Muscletown USA, a book chronicling the history of weightlifting in the United States. Rick was an
Olympian in 1972 and a Senior National Champion in 1971 and 1972. Kevin also noted that he would not exist were it
not for weightlifting; his father met his mother at the 1971 Mens World Weightlifting Championships in Lima, Peru.
Though his dad and uncle have both passed away and most of the other weightlifters from the Rutherford-Sayre Park
weightlifting programs heyday have moved on, a couple of the veterans are still around. Bob Bobbondiman and BenHolt have been weightlifting at Rutherford-Sayre Park for decades. At 61 years old, Bob recently won the Masters
National Tournament for his age group. Ben is the most senior lifter at age 65. When Kevin wanted to learn about and
participate in the parks program a couple of years ago, Bob and Ben took him under their collective w ing. Since then,
the program has flourished and there are currently 40 to 50 weightlifters participating in the program. Participants
compete for fun, not for money. Kevin described the group as a crew of like-minded individuals who enjoy
weightlifting. The program hosted a competition at Rutherford Sayre Park on Saturday, December 3rd.
Anyone interested in participating may contact Kevin Holbrook by e-mail [email protected].
Galewood- Mont Clare LibraryMany of our readers have asked about the status of the Galewood Mont Clare library. Unfortunately we do not have
any firm news of if (or when) it might find a permanent location. As many of you know the city budget has been
particularly hard on the library system this year. What can we do? 1. Continue to support the location at Rutherford
Sayre Park to show how much we as a community value having a branch library in our neighborhood. 2. Attend a
library board meeting to bring attention to our library. 3. Call Alderman Sposato to voice your concern.
Additional programming can be found at the West Belmont Branch Library located about 15 minutes from Galewood.

A Business in Your Neighborhood: SerrellisFiner FoodsBy: Maureen Connell
Serrellis Food Mart, an Italian specialty store, is a long standing Chicago tradition. Currently owned by Patricia
(Patti) Serrelli Hereau, Pattis father and grandfather started the business in 1934, making it almost 78 years old.
The original location was near the intersection of Huron and Western in Chicago. Serrellis then moved to the NorthAvenue/Pulaski area. They have been at their current location, 6454 W North Avenue, for 29 years. They moved to
this neighborhood because it was booming at the time. They felt that this area was a good place to be and it has
been.
Pattis favorite aspect of doing business in this neighborhood is the fact that people come from all over for their
products. In particular, Italian beef is their claim to fame. Former
neighborhood residents come from faraway locations including
Michigan and Indiana just for their beef. Since they realized there was
a market for it, Serrellis started shipping their beef six years ago. Their
website is http://www.serrelli-street.com/. Besides retail and online
service, Serrellis also sells their beef wholesale. In addition to beef, they also boast sausage, a fresh meat counter with a butcher at your
service, and Italian specialties at the deli counter.
My mouth is watering just thinking about all of the deliciousness
that they feature. I wonder if they ship to North New England Avenue
since my napping toddler is presently preventing a
spontaneous field trip

My Mothers KitchenBy: Carol Simmons
It has been my life-long dream to be a restaurant owner. After working for
McDonald's Corporation in Oak Brook, Illinois for 22 years, I decided if Ididn't do it now it might not happen and a dream would never be realized
and so My Mother's Kitchen opened October 11, 2011.
We are a family-owned business offering 'southern comfort food' (fried
chicken, meat loaf, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, fried catfish,
seafood gumbo, shrimp creole, etc.) and we have fallen in love with our
location and our customers.
I try to remember our customers' names and their favorite foods from our
menu which changes daily. Janice will call and say "I can be there in anhour, would you please make a peach cobbler?"; Thomas will leave his
phone number and say "call me when you put banana pudding on the
menu"; Mrs. Mister has a favorite table that we try to have available for her
whenever she comes; we always look for Cassie and the two ministers
(Williams and Williams) who visit weekly; and then there's Bob and Mike;
and Ollie and Rick and Nadine and so many more that we look forward to
seeing and hearing from via phone calls.
My Mother's Kitchen is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11:00-8:00pm;
Friday and Saturday, 11:00-9:00pm, and Sunday, 12:00-7:00pm. We areclosed to the public on Monday's but our dining room is available for
booking private parties. We also offer catering (catering menus coming
soon) and will do your cooking for you.
Please come visit My Mother's Kitchen and enjoy a "taste of the south"
and share your favorites with me and if time permits, I'll try to
accommodate you.
New to our Neighborhood! We have added a section to the Gazette to spotlight new businesses
opening in the Galewood and Mont Clare neighborhoods. If you know

Chicago Strong All Winter LongBy: John Hayley, BA, CSCS
Winter in Chicago can throw your fitness into a funk deeper than the snow drift in your gangway. Just because you cant take a
walk to Sayre Park or run the stadium at Concordia, does not mean your waist is destined to go from thin to deep dish. Rather
than shovel your fitness into the corner, follow this 3 day/week, 20 minute, in-home, no equipment circuit, to stay Chicago
strong all winter long. As always, make sure to consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
After a brief warm-up, set a timer for 20 minutes. Complete the following circuit as many times as possible, taking rest/water
whenever needed. Always be more concerned with your form than your speed. This is also a great way to judge your progress
over the winter. As a beginner, you might be only be able to complete 4 circuits. After a while you might be able to work up to
10 or more.
1) Core Strength. The Plank. 10 seconds
Lying prone on the floor with your forearms on the floor so your elbows are directly underneath your shoulders, lift up your
body by flexing your thighs and pointing your toes into the floor. Your shoulders, hips and thighs should be straight and
parallel to the floor. Hold yourself in this position for up to 2 minutes. Start with 5 or 10 second intervals and work up to 1
continuous minute.
2) Lower Body Strength. Squats. 20 repetitions
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and toes pointed straight ahead. Stick your butt out and bend your knees as if
you are going to sit in a chair. Work to get your thighs parallel to the floor, keep your heels down and make sure to not let
you knees track beyond your toes. Press through the heels and stand up.
3) Upper Body Strength. Pushups. 10 repetitions
If you lack the strength for a mans push-up, try a reverse push-up. Start at the top position of the pushup and lower
yourselfall the way down slowly and under control. Push back up with your knees on the floor, then extend your legs
and repeat.
4) Agility/Cardio. Stairs. 10 repetitions
A quick trip up and down the stairs in your home is a great way to add cardio and strength. Only have a couple stairs?
Simple, just use the first step. Right foot up, left foot up, right foot down, left foot down. That is 1 repetition. Continue
repetitions - increasing speed.
After you have completed the 20 minutes, use the following stretch, along with your other favorite stretches, to cool down.
5) Cool down. Downward facing dog. 5 repetitions
Start in a pushup position. Lift your hips/butt up, straighten your legs and try to push your heels into the floor. Place your
head between your arms and pull your shoulder blades down and back. 5 deep breaths = 1 repetition.
Congratulations, you are one step closer to keeping yourself Chicago strong all winter long!

I am ready; I have 20 years of experience in public service with an extensive
background in finance and have been successful in balancing budgets without layoffs
or service reductions. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Marketing/Economics along with a Masters Degree in Public
Service from DePaul University and received a Fellowship from Harvard University. I am also a small business
owner of WingStop with my family and have volunteered with the Local School Council and community organizations.
But most importantly I am running because I want to make sure there is a strong future for our children and the next
generation. I believe together we begin the process of moving Illinois in the right direction.

I am seeking election to the office of Democratic Committeeman because it is
an opportunity to be involved in politics and continue the activities, accomplishments, and open participation that was
promoted when I was the Executive Director of the Galewood -Montclare Community Organization. I will create an
open and progressive Democratic Party and bring the same community organization style and activities to the voters
on a ward-wide level.
My goal as Committeeman, will be to bring information to the voters about the candidates, what the elected offices
are, and how they function through: news- letters, a web site, town-hall meetings, and debates. My education in
political science and my experience as an attorney will enable me to effectively communicate this information to thevoters so that on Election Day, the voters will have the best possible information to make an informed decision.
I believe that political organizations should be about the people and not the politician. I believe so strongly in this idea
that I pledge to not seek a paid governmental office. The committeeman should serve as a voice of the people, a
source of information, and a platform to do good things for the community, not a tool for one person to keep a paid
office. By not seeking a paid office I will be an objective source of support for good Democratic candidates that
represent the peoples wishes and the voters voice to the Democratic Party.

I ran for Alderman because I wanted to create a new system of open and
accessible government for the 36th Ward. Since being elected we have
done just that through a series of town hall meetings, email updates,
Facebook announcements, and a new 36 th ward website. As committeemanI will continue these efforts by making the political process of the 36 th ward open and accessible.

Marino & Assoc., PC has been successfully serving this community for more than
14 years. Your vote for judge will allow me to have an even greater impact within our justice system. I grew up on the
Northwest side of Chicago, a plumbers daughter, and earned a Bachelor and Law Degree from DePaul University.
In over 22 years of legal practice, I have prosecuted and defended, in civil and criminal courts, for both the
