Feature Firm: Southam Design Incorporated MESSAGE FROM THE ARIDO-EOC PRESIDENT... Welcome to the Winter/Spring Edition of the EOC Newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity, first and foremost, to thank Christine Edge for revitalizing the EOC newsletter; raising its quality and expanding its breadth in every issue. Thank you Christine, from all of us. This message marks my last submission for the newsletter as President. I can’t believe the year has passed so swiftly. It seems such a short while ago that the board was meeting to strategize and decide on what initiatives should be delivered for the upcoming year. We didn’t get it all done but we certainly had a busy and fun year trying. Of note, our House & Garden Tour, Student IIDEX Bus Trip and Holiday Party were all resounding successes! As this ARIDO year wraps up and many of us are scrambling to ensure our end-of-cycle points are recorded through the ARIDO website, your board is busily planning a very exciting AGM event for April 28 th , 2011. Watch your email inbox for news of EOC’s first ever AGM Showroom Crawl. I am personally hoping many of you will support the generosity of our industry partners as they open their showroom doors for an afternoon open house culminating in a special AGM gathering. It’s a new concept and we are looking to you to make it a resounding success. In the coming year I will be coordinating EOC’s CEU offerings. If you have any ideas on what you’d like to see, please don’t be shy, email me and let me know. Best wishes to Gayle Kennedy, your incoming president, for a wonderful year ahead. Finally, a big thank you to all the EOC board for their wonderful ideas, keen dedication, great humour and enduring patience as we navigated through the year. These are YOUR volunteers and they are doing a great job. Don’t forget – mark your calendar (in pen) for April 28 th and see you at the AGM!!! ARIDO-EOC HOUSE AND GARDEN TOUR

ARIDO-EOC's President, Richard Newbury and Event Coordinator, Caitlyn Nott were on hand to present a cheque to Bruce House representatives Martha Scott and Jay Koornstra. Bruce House is a community-based organization providing housing, compassionate care and support in Ottawa for people living with HIV and AIDS, based on the belief that everyone has the right to live and die with dignity. The donation comes as a result of the funds raised from the first ever ARIDO-EOC House and Garden Tour held in September 2010. Thank you to all those who participated, volunteered and took the tour – with you help we were able to donate $1000 to Bruce House!

SUMMER 2010

HOLIDAY PARTY 2010 RECAP!

ARIDO-EOC, ORSA and IFMA outdid themselves this year with the uniquely-themed holiday party "Birds of a Feather". At the gorgeous, newly renovated Museum of Nature, Architects, designers, facility managers and sales representatives alike preened their plumage and shook their tail feathers for a fun-filled evening. The night was filled with great food by Tulips and Maples, fantastic music by Johnny Vegas and friendly competition for best costume and accessory. A wonderful turnout of people as well as donations for the silent auction that raised funds for charities and schools chosen by the event hosts: ORSA – Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University; IFMA – Candlelighters and ARIDO will donate their share towards bursaries to be awarded to the Interior Design programs at Algonquin College and La Cité Collegiale! All in all it was a very successful and exciting night to be a part of. ARIDO-EOC would like to thank all the companies and individuals that donated items and sponsored the event as well as the volunteers from each organization that assisted in making the beautiful event spread its wings and come to life!

WINTER 2011

SHOWROOM CRAWL!!! As you all know, EOC is a maverick when it comes to Annual General Meetings! This year’s AGM is no exception. This April we are encouraging our members to take part in an expanded AGM day where sponsoring showrooms around the city will be open and expecting YOU to visit. Choose a couple or all of them and see what’s new. Reacquaint yourself with the showrooms. Visit a couple of your favorite reps. Maybe just get out of the office and get product-inspired. Whatever your motivation, this is EOC’s chance to give a little time back to these great local companies who continue to support our chapter throughout the year. The more showrooms you visit, the more times your name will be entered into a special draw at the actual AGM. This year’s EOC-AGM, hosted and sponsored by Astro Design Centre, will be a place to come at the end of your “crawl” to refuel with food and drink while touring their exciting and luxurious showroom. What: EOC-AGM Where: All over the city When: Thursday, April 28th, 2011 - Noon to 5pm self-guided showroom tours - 5pm AGM at Astro Design Centre (6:15 Meeting) Why: Because we’re EOC and we do things differently around here!!! Check your email in-box for an invite to register, access a site map and obtain AGM details for this expanded format EOC-AGM and help to make this crawl a sensation.

Southam Design Incorporated Feature Firm

Southam Design Inc was founded by Penny Southam in 1992 in Ottawa. Over the years SDI has won over 25 design awards for various projects. Founder Penny is no stranger to the design community and has been a contributing writer for the Ottawa Citizen, Style at Home and Canadian Architecture and Design Magazine. Furthermore, Penny has on numerous occasions presented at public trade shows on many topics including the benefits of hiring a registered designer. You also may have seen HGTV’s Design U where Owner/Founder Penny is a ‘design professor’ and now on W Network’s TV show All For Nothing. SDI founder brought Scavolini to Ottawa 2 years ago and is now co-owner of Studio S-Scavolini, a funky, sleek full service kitchen/bathroom showroom catering to the public and the design/architectural community. SDI’s main focus of design is residential from full service custom home design to all things interior. SDI will take on 1 to 2 key commercial projects a year to round out the scope. One of the most exciting projects SDI embarked on was Amica at Westoboro Park, located on Richmond Road which is the 2nd of three, high-end boutique retirement homes that Southam designed for Amica Mature Lifstyles Group. Amica at Westboro Park is a six storey building with approximately 20,000 sq.ft. per floor. SDI was responsible for the interior design services of all public spaces within the building, from initial conception to completion including programming and pre-design stage, re-working adjacencies and key public spaces such as the dining rooms, spa and fitness among others. SDI worked closely with all consultants including the engineers and Wendy Brawley of Barry Hobin’s architectural team. The goal was to create an elegant, refined, warm atmosphere - inviting and comfortable for the residents. Departing from the expected retirement home look that one would anticipate, SDI was inspired by a more contemporary vision by creating more minimalist design elements through the use of clean lines, geometry proportion and a combination of asymmetrical and symmetrical balance. A grouping of rift cut, expresso oak and zebrano are used throughout the millwork design in varying proportions in the public spaces of the building creating strong focal points. The detailing in the ceilings delineates the areas below and creates the illusion of height through the use of cove lighting. A combination of ‘screen’ designs in the dining room allow for an open concept layout and beautiful views of the Keg Manor gardens in the summer, while creating a more private atmosphere. The Harmonious colour palette in the furniture and custom carpet design adds to the soothing, refined atmosphere. Amica at Westboro Park was a collaborative effort made possible by a cohesive team from within SDI, the architects, engineers and of course the many manufacturer’s reps. A project to be very proud of!
