Dear Friends,

For Bishop Conaty–Our Lady of Loretto High School, November and December mark the end of the first semester, the halfway point in the school year. It has been a very busy and productive first half of year for us. Please stay in touch as the second half is full of many school and alumnae activities we hope you can be a part of. In this edition of Echoes of Memories you will find information about these and other events. In February we will again host a Tea on

campus commemorating Sr. Mary Jean Meier, RSM, CGHS ’42. We will also be conducting our Valentine’s Raffle with a grand prize of a week-long vacation in Hawaii courtesy of the generosity of the William Hannon Foundation. In April we will host our Second Annual Alumnae Day.

As you receive this newsletter, the season of Advent will be upon us and we will begin preparing for the celebration of God’s greatest gift to us, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the promise of eternal life.

In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we often forget what we are really here for and where we are heading. As Gloria Hutchinson reminds us in A Joyful Jour-ney, Advent Day By Day: “Advent rouses us with a robust ‘Be prepared.’ We do not know the time of Christ’s coming, at the end of the world or the close of our earthly lives.” Are we ready? How are we preparing ourselves? What can we do to become better people?

At Bishop Conaty–Loretto, we strive to transform our students into becoming better young women. Through our religion classes, program of class retreats, Christian Service requirement and outreach to local and worldwide charities, we provide our students with opportunities to grow in Christ. This November, for example, the student body collected canned foods and hygiene and laundry supplies for Alexandria House. This is a local transitional residence that provides safe and supportive housing for women and children overcoming homelessness and educational and enrichment opportunities to its residents and neighbors.

The student body also assisted the National Honor Society to raise funds for FINCA, an international non-profit organization that provides small business loans to women in developing nations. With examples of community outreach such as these, we ask our students to become better people. We are very proud of the compassion and generosity of our young women. The entire Bishop Conaty–Our Lady of Loretto community thanks you, our devoted alumnae and friends, for your continued support and generosity.

May Christ’s love be in your hearts, Christ’s joy in your homes, Christ’s peace on our earth. May you know the blessings of Christmas today and always.

aha simple cooking with heartOn Wednesday, October 26, 2011, members of the Healthy Life-styles Club were treated to a healthy cooking demonstration pre-sented by the American Heart Association in cooperation with Walmart. The girls were schooled on the dangers of too much sugar and salt in their daily diets and then prepared black bean salsa served in tortillas at their tables. author on campusFollowing a tradition that began in 2009, the Bishop Conaty–Our Lady of Loretto student body is assigned a novel to read over the summer and the author is invited to the campus in the fall to spend the day. This year’s selection was Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith and her visit to the school was on Thursday, September 29. The day began with an assembly in the auditorium where Sherri spoke to the faculty and student body about her life and how she came to be an author with a Q & A at the end. The rest of the day she attended English classes, of course, taking time out at lunch to personally sign copies of her book.

alumnae newsSeveral of our alums have commented that we have too much current school news and not enough alumnae news in Echoes of Memories. Our office has heard many times from the graduates of Our Lady of Loretto High School because of the perceived disconnect. We welcome any and all news from alumnae and will gladly publish your story—but you have to write it and submit it to us. We include much of the current school news because we want you to know Bishop Conaty–Loretto is doing well and we want you to take pride in that.

Contributions so far range from $12 to $1000. If you made a contribution but do not see your name on this list, please contact the Alumnae Relations Office at extension 109 or 106 and we will get you in next time. Sadly, last year less than 5% of the 8000 alumnae we mailed made a contribution. What if the other 95% gave just that $12? We would exceed our goal! Please help us help those young women we support. This year, over 90% of our students require financial aid. Did you receive tuition assistance when you attended? Can you help someone now please?

developmentAs you know by now, we have launched our Annual Appeal with our 12 by 12 Campaign. So far, we are ahead of last year at this time and have, to date, received over $25,000 toward our goal of $90,000. We wish to thank and acknowledge the following alumnae who have made their contributions as of press time:
