Cardboard Box City –2011 was another huge success. The weather cooperated for a very balmy night ...temperatures were in the mild 30-40 degree range and everyone had a fantastic time! There were approximately 250 in attendance and 180 stayed all night to raise

money for The Salvation Army and Interfaith Hospitality Network. Approximately $16,000 was raised. The God Squad youth from St. Charles and Eyota Catholic churches raised the most funds $2,325.96. Chris Beighley raised the most individual donations of $935.

KTTC’s Robin Wolfram did an amazing job as MC for the event! Thanks Robin!!! To view picture slideshow: www.cardboard-box-city.org

The dwellings this year were amazing and very unique! You can check them all out at our website: www.cardboard-box-city.org We want to thank our MAJOR sponsors for our event this year: Premier Bank (and their great volunteers who set up their ‘box’ and worked the event); and KTTC and Fox 47. We are so grateful for their support and continued coverage of our events. Sheltered Reality o once again put on an amazing concert for the participants. This group, year after year, provides excitement, participation and a very meaningful message to all who hear them...you CAN make a difference...one person at a time if you just take the chance! Thanks for another great concert!

IHN’s 5th annual Benefit Choir Concert was held at

Rochester Civic Center—Presentation Hall on Friday, November 18, 2011. There were

approximately 300 singers and 27 member orchestra, as well as the Classic Brass! What an

amazing event. A special solo by Joel Blair—”I

Won’t Let Go” was so very touching and told the story of the guest families that we serve. It was

fantastic music—the mass pieces were so incredible—you had to be there to appreciate it!

We raised $8750 for the IHN program! Thank You!

“IHN Person of the Year for 2011”

Warren Harmon was named “Person of the Year” for

his dedication and work as a host site volunteer, and all of the work he does on the Board creating a

professional image for IHN.

Andrew’s Story We came into the program 9 years ago… myself, my wife and our daughter who was 5. We came here from Chicago because we wanted to make a change and a new start. IHN gave us that start. We stayed in the IHN program for one month. Everybody we met was helpful, friendly, outgoing people. I would tell anyone who was coming into the IHN program that they can’t go wrong. The IHN volunteers treated us just like anyone else – like human beings. Being in the IHN shelter and going through that difficult time…was like climbing a mountain… you are coming from the valley and steady climbing and climbing – and it seems like you are never going to get to the top…the IHN volunteers and staff didn’t let go …and we kept climbing ...it was the most rewarding when we finally did get to the top. I started off at WalMart as a custodian – doing the floors – for 6 months and at the same time put in applications for Rochester School District and then landed the job there and my wife, Sharon is a crew manager at McDonald’s. We have been going up ever since. We went from homelessness to buying our own home 3 years ago. Our daughter is a 9th grader this year. We worked hard to climb that mountain and without the help of IHN volunteers and staff… and their constant encouragement. I just don’t know where we might be today.

Terri’s story I honestly cannot remember how I heard about Interfaith Hospitality. At the time my burden was so blinding. The landslide of blessings and support we have received since staying with them makes the network impossible to forget! When my daughter was 5 months old, I chose to leave an abusive relationship and we moved back to Rochester – a place that is familiar to me. I struggled to find a healthy home I could afford, we had moved seven times by the time my daughter was 4 years old. In May of 2010 I was told my rent I could barely make each month – would be

going up. Because of this, I couldn’t renew my lease. We packed all of our belongings into storage and we moved into our 91 dodge caravan, while I told my daughter – Don’t tell anyone we’re doing this. The fear of losing her for lack of providing a home was all I could think about. This is what led us to Interfaith. During our stay with interfaith, I found emotional support, financial guidance and support as a parent. All of the volunteers we met shared my pain and heartache of feeling unaccomplished and a terrible parent. While they suffered with me, they encouraged me not to give up and reminded me of all I have tried to do to be better. Every person was amazing and uplifting. Without them I am certain we would still be homeless and staying anywhere I could find. To the volunteer couple with the pig, and the countless other volunteers I can’t remember the names of – THANK YOU! Thank you for all the dinners, breakfasts, shoulders to cry on, ears to listen, and to the

churches who provided a warm place to sleep. You have helped me grow and renewed my faith in humanity and life!

When I look back at the year we have just finished I am filled with amazement and wonder...at all of the fantastic volunteers who work so tirelessly to keep our network successful with the main goal of “helping families in need”. I don’t think it is just “Minnesota nice” — it is because all of our ‘team’ really care and truly believe in our mission. It is so easy and a joy to come to work, knowing we have such a great team put together to help change the lives of families who need help. As we look forward to the coming year...I know it is going to be another fantastic adventure for all of us! Meeting new guests, helping, supporting, and watching them become successful and confident. Working on our fund raising events is always a joy! We will be doing the 2nd Annual Rochesterfest IHN Bed Race. I can only say—if it is half as much fun as the first one...you won’t want to miss this! And then, of course, we will be doing the Cardboard Box City and the IHN Benefit Concert in the fall. I am more acutely aware of friends, family, volunteers and guests—and how important all are in my life after the year my family has personally gone through. I appreciate so much the love, prayers and support that we have received from each of you. We learned one great thing...the network can survive without me!!! Our staff and board did a fantastic job while I was on leave and I so appreciate the time with my family. I feel so blessed to have this kind of solid support system and thank you so much for that love. My prayer for each of you is to have a wonderful new year. Never take advantage of family or friends—be sure to show them you care every day because we never know what tomorrow is going to bring. Blessings and peace for a wonderful 2012. — Joanne
