End of the Year Message

The year is quickly coming to end and it has been an

exciting year for Hadassah both nationally and for our chapter as well. The most unique event was the gath-ering in Jerusalem of more than two thousand women to celebrate Hadassah’s one hundredth birthday and the dedication and opening of the Sarah Wetson Da-vidson Tower at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem with all the attendant festivities.

Henrietta Szold would be so proud. Here in Santa Fe we give many, many

thanks to all the women who have served so ably on the Hadassah Board this year. Special kudos and gratitude go to our out-going co- presidents, Carol Toobin and Valerie Frost for their extraordinary service. Under their leadership we have more than met out our quotas, bought a brick in our chapter’s name on the walking path into the hospital and provided great programs for our membership.

Your continued generosity and support

of “Chai” and “ Friends” and the purchase of trees, certificates and cards help ensure our chapter’s financial health. Happily, our membership has continued to grow and we are eagerly welcoming the active participa-tion of new members.

Stay tuned for a wealth of interesting programs in the coming year and plan to attend our annual luncheon meeting and election and installation of officers on De-cember 9th.

To all, a happy Hanukkah and a healthy and prosperous 2013.—The Santa Fe Chapter Board of Directors

Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival Sunday, December 16, 3:30 pmIsraeli Academy Award-Winning Film, The Flat At age 98, director Arnon Goldfinger’s grandmother passed away, leaving him the task of clearing out the Tel Aviv flat that she and her husband shared for decades since immigrating from Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Sifting through a dense mountain of photos, letters, files, and objects, Goldfinger begins to uncover clues that seem to point to a greater mystery, and soon a complicated and shocking family history unfolds before his camera. The Flat is Goldfinger’s story. Exclusive Skype interview with Director Arnon Goldfinger.

Sunday, February 3, 3:30 pmYiddish Cinema Classic, TevyeCalled one of the 10 best Jewish films by Los Angeles Times critic, Kenneth Turan, Tevye is the first non-English film selected by the Library of Congress for the National Film Archive. Based on the same Sholem Aleichem stories as Fiddler on the Roof,

this is Tevye is unlike any other. Made in 1939, the film is a darker view than the popular musical. It’s a Tevye seen through a much different lens, one that transmits a powerful message. Following the film, Dr. Avi Patt, Professor of Modern Jewish Studies, will discuss the relationship between the movie, the play and Sholem Aleichem’s stories as part of a Skype interview.

Sunday, March 3, 4:00 pm Award Winning Israeli Film, Precious LifeThe Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival brings the 2010 winner of the Israeli Academy Award for Best Documentary, Precious Life, to Santa Fe next spring. The film is the story of a three year old Palestinian from Gaza with a rare immune disorder whose only chance to live is in the hands of an Israeli doctor. It is a story that provides a nuanced portrait of the subtle and not so subtle ways that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict affects ordinary lives in an extraordinary situation.

All screenings will be at the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA). For tickets and more information, go to www.santafejff.org

F all, our favorite time of year! On Sunday, September 9th, we had a membership tea at the home

of Carol Toobin. We did what ladies do--we visited with each other, as we sipped our tea and ate delicious desserts. Co-Presidents Valerie and Carol welcomed everyone. Then we turned the program over to our fabulous membership chairman, Sandy Levine. Sandy introduced our new members who were in attendance and each of them told us a little bit about themselves. We had 26 new life members, 4 new annual members, 1 new associate member and 6 new child members join our Santa Fe Chapter of Hadassah in the last twelve months. Sandy and Marsha (Reindorf-co-chair), thanks for all your hard work.

We had a wonderful turnout at our Sunday, October 21st meeting to hear Rabbi Jack Shlachter talk about Jewish leaders in the theory area at Los Alamos Lab during the mid 1940’s. Rabbi Jack, also a physicist at the Lab, told anecdotal stories of these men, providing a personal side of each of these brilliant scientists. It was an informative and delightful talk. Thank you to Marcia Torobin, chairman of the day, who arranged the program and introduced Rabbi Jack. Marcia, together with Valerie and Carol, provided the food for the reception that followed. Thanks also to Carol Pava, Reggie Klein, and Barb LaMont for your help.

Our last program of the year will be on Sunday, December 9th. (See page 2 for details.)

HADAssAH CeNTeNNiAl 2012

Miki Schulman was overcome with emotion as she entered the gleaming new

19-story Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital University Center-Ein Kerem, with its five-floor underground hospital and interactive Hadassah Heritage Center.

“It is absolutely amazing. It took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes,” she tells ISRAEL21c.

The hospital board member was visiting along with some 2,000 of the 330,000 members of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, to mark the global charitable organization’s 100th anniversary.

Schulman’s main focus in planning the mid-October Centennial Convention was to show delegates many of the medical and humanitarian projects that helped win Hadassah a 2005 Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

“This is a celebration of Hadassah’s first 100 years and the launch of its next 100 years,” says Schulman, “so it was important to the leadership to make sure that our members and delegates all had at least a taste of each of the areas in which we are involved.”

The track record is impressive: More than half the hospital-based research in Israel is conducted through the Hadassah Medical Organization. And through its School of Public Health and other outreach initiatives, Hadassah trains medical personnel and students from the Palestinian Authority, Egypt and Jordan, and from about 90 other countries.

The ethnic diversity of staff and patients at the Ein Kerem campus and at the sister Hadassah University Hospital at Mount Scopus is a point of pride for the organization, which is Jerusalem’s largest non-governmental employer.

The international public may be unaware that Arab and Jewish doctors and nurses work side by side, and that Arab and Jewish patients have access to the same services, often sharing the same hospital room, but it’s no big secret. “All you have to do is walk in and see for yourself,” Schulman says.

include volunteer HIV/AIDS education and treatment in Ethiopia and Kazakhastan; eye surgery for needy African patients; adult male circumcision for HIV prevention in Africa; and public health education in Katmandu.

Hadassah medical personnel have participated in Israeli rescue operations around the world since 1960. Among the disaster scenes where they’ve brought critical care expertise are Armenia, Turkey, Greece, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Nairobi and Tanzania. Recently, the government of Panama hired Hadassah as a consultant to build a state-of-the-art emergency trauma unit there.

“Whenever there’s a need for very specialized medical attention, we are always there because we are experts in so many areas, particularly disaster relief,” says Schulman. “We can set up field hospitals in four hours and

treat scores of patients quickly and efficiently, and we’re familiar with the types of disease that disasters create.”

The impact of the Hadassah network was recognized with an Israel Postal Authority stamp and first-day cover unveiled during the Centennial Convention by Israeli President Shimon Peres and Hadassah National President Marcie Natan.

Another ceremony paid tribute to Hadassah’s continued long-time support of Youth Aliyah (immigration to Israel) and its partnership with the Jewish National Fund in operating Hadassah Neurim, one of Hadassah’s three youth villages for at-risk youth.

Medical innovationsOver the years, the Hadasit technology transfer company has commercialized scores of novel therapeutics, diagnostics and medical devices generated by Hadassah physicians

and scientists. Just three examples: an at-home cardiac defibrillator, deep brain stimulation to treat Parkinson’s disease, and a non-invasive diagnostic tool for gastric reflux.

Based on technologies developed by researchers at Hadassah Medical Organization, Hadasit helped establish startups including Exalenz (for diagnosing gastrointestinal and liver diseases), Medifreeze (the cryopreservation company that operates Hadassah’s stem-cell cord blood bank), Gamida Cell(gene therapy products), GVT (delivery systems for gene therapy) and TheraVir (anti-cancer viruses).

Hadassah is a leader in stem-cell therapy technologies and international stem-cell policy advocacy. The organization won a 2006 award from the Genetics Policy Institute for its 2005 initiative designed to educate elected US officials about the importance of embryonic stem-cell research.

This year, Hadassah released positive results from the first clinical trial of NurOwn stem-cell therapy for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The next phase is now going on under the supervision of the renowned Israeli stem-cell therapy pioneer Prof. Dimitrios Karussis.

Hadassah was the site of Israel’s first double bypass surgery (1964), first successful bone marrow transplant (1977), first “test tube” baby (1983), first successful heart transplant (1986), first successful liver transplant (1991) and first successful lung transplant (1992) — and the first computer-guided hip replacement in the world (2004). In 1986, Hadassah opened the first ambulatory surgery center in Israel followed by Israel’s first trauma unit in 1991.Article printed from ISRAEL21c http://israel21c.org

HADAssAH’s ANNiVeRsARy

And so they did.And here we are: Daughters and granddaughters

and great granddaughters of those strong, committed, visionary, feet-on-the-ground women. What made them different? Why did the organization they started continue and thrive, when others of the time are long forgotten?

Because they were practical Zionists. They dreamed of what could be in Palestine—and then they took off their gloves, rolled up their sleeves, opened their pocketbooks, and made it happen. They did send nurses to a bleak and barren Jerusalem…and laid the groundwork for Israel’s

healthcare system. They made the deserts bloom. They rescued and nurtured and educated children who would grow up to shape a new nation.

They dreamed of what could be for American Jews. They taught women to be leaders, and advocates for issues that matter to Israel and to American families. They championed the budding Zionist youth movement—their promise that Hadassah’s partnership with Israel would last forever.

They could not know that the future would bring Depression, Holocaust, and wars. With intelligence, energy

and grace, they met every call to action with action. Today we stand with a prosperous, proud Israel. Like

those pioneering women a century ago, we are practical Zionists. Today, because of you—Hadassah hospitals treat one million patients a year, and our medical research and trauma care are world renown. Today, because of you—Israel’s earth is green, and youth become productive citizens and leaders, adding their strength to the land we love.

We move together into our future with confidence and with a love for the Jewish people, a steadfast commitment to Israel, and a mission to ensure Jewish continuity.

Happy Centennial, Hadassah!100 years of Hadassah - http://www.hadassah.org/site/c.keJNIWOvElH/b.6055235/k.7B0/100_Years_of_Hadassah.htm

100 years of Hadassah“ If we are Zionists…what is the good of meeting and talking and drinking tea? let us do

something real and practical—let us organize the Jewish women of america and send nurses and doctors to Palestine.”

—Henrietta Szold, on February 24, 1912, the day Hadassah was founded, to 38 women gathered at Temple Emanuel, New York City
