Kayak For Sabercats Resulting in B. Snaly

Maranatha students Jon Gress and Jacob Boucher joined friend Garrett Feik to kayak the 320-mile Rock River from Horicon Marsh, WI, to Quad Cities, IL, to raise money for a Sabercat mascot costume.

Originally, the men planned to complete their task in 17 days, but were able to finish in 15, setting the record for the first group to have ever kayaked the entire river in consecutive days. The story garnered press from numerous local newspapers and TV stations and helped raise over $1,500 toward the Sabercat costume.

As a result of the money earned during Kayak for Sabercats, as well as other donations, Maranatha was proud to introduce “B. Snarly” on Friday, October 3, during a competitive volleyball game against Northland International University. On that night, an enthusiastic crowd celebrated the newest member of the athletics family, B. Snarly. The official mascot of the Sabercats was formally introduced with the Maranatha lineups prior to the game and took to the crowd, high-fiving the Crazies and taking “selfies” throughout the match. Thank you to all of those who donated and had a part in bringing B. Snarly into the Maranatha family.

Introducing the Maranatha SabercatsAbout the Sabercat

What we know about the Saber-toothed cat has been determined from the fossil record. Hundreds of thousands of Sabercat bones have been excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits in California and fossil beds have been discovered throughout North and South America as well as in Europe.

Since 1901, scientists have studied the bones and learned much about the Saber-toothed cat. Smilidon fatalis literally means “deadly knife tooth.” Fearsome and ferocious, Saber-toothed cats were bear-like in stature, with powerful limbs, large neck muscles, and up to nine-inch canines. A hunter of mammoths and other large beasts, the Saber-toothed cat was among the “most impressive carnivores ever to have lived.” Similar to lions, they would work together to preserve and protect the pack.

The Bible says in Genesis 1:24 that land animals like the Saber-toothed cat were created on the sixth day. And according to Genesis 6:19-21, we know every cat “kind” boarded the Ark. Creation scientists at Answers in Genesis suggest the Saber-toothed cat “probably migrated to America via land bridges around the early part of the Ice Age (approx. 2,200 BC) and became extinct by the end of the Ice Age (approx. 1,600 BC).”

We consider our MBU Sabercats fierce opponents and courageous athletes. But the Sabercats also embody cooperation, teamwork, and strong family ties—all characteristics inherent in the MBU brand.

Coach Keith SalscheiderSalscheider has steadily improved his team’s offensive output in his two seasons at the helm. The team experienced a 12-point increase in points per game since his inaugural season, averaging 74 points per game last season, and jumped eight wins in that same time span. Salscheider led his team to a 12-15 finish last season, and an NCCAA Midwest Region Semifinal matchup against Grace Bible College, a team that consistently plays for National Championships.  Salscheider was an assistant coach for Edgewood College in 2011-12 before coming to Maranatha in the summer of 2012. He played professional basketball in Australia, Denmark, and the U.S. from 2003-09. Salscheider played college basketball at Liberty University, St. Cloud State University (Minn.) and

Christian Heritage College (Calif.), now San Diego Christian College. His professional basketball career included four years in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He averaged 17 points and shot 45 percent from 3-point range for the Great Falls (Mont.) Explorers in 2007-08. Salscheider is also an instructor in the Business Department’s Sport Management major. He and wife Colleen were married in 2011.

2013-14 Men’s Basketball ReviewIn only their second year under head coach Keith Salscheider and their last season as the Crusaders, the 2013-14 men’s basketball team ended with their best record since the 2003 season, finishing 12-15 overall and 8-6 in the NCCAA. Averaging 74.4 points per game on 43% shooting from the field throughout the season, the Crusader’s high powered offense led the way in earning the #2 overall seed in this year’s NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.  Leading the charge for this potent offense was AD3I Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Independent freshman guard, Brady Moses. Moses led the AD3I in scoring

for the season as the guard averaged just over 19 PPG on 45% shooting from both the field and three-point line. This freshman sensation was not the only Crusader to garner season recognition, however, as teammates Brett Cashner, David Wenthold, and Zach Terpstra all received AD3I Honorable Mentions. Cashner was the team’s starting center and finished with multiple top-10 rankings in the AD3I, including third in total rebounds (6.9), fourth in offensive rebounds (62), and fifth in field goal percentage (55%). Wenthold, a freshman three-point specialist from Geneseo, IL, averaged 8.3 PPG and shot 43% from beyond the arc. Terpstra finished out the season strong for the Crusaders, as the freshman forward posted 7.1 PPG on 50% shooting with 4.5 rebounds per game.  After a shaky first semester that saw the youthful Crusaders go 2-7 overall, the

team rallied together to earn a 10-8 overall record (9-2 NCCAA) throughout the course of the second semester. Season highlights include defeating Northland International University both home and away, as well as finishing the regular season at 4-1 in the NCCAA Midwest Region to earn the #2 overall seed for the conference tournament. The Crusaders would conclude their season at that tournament, eventually falling to the #3 ranked Grace Tigers. Looking ahead to this year, the team said goodbye to one senior, forward Kyle Kutz (Cambridge, WI). Kutz was a four-year player for the Crusaders, and averaged 4.2 PPG on 46% shooting. The forward had

a season high 13 point, 4 rebound and 2 steals against Faith Baptist Bible College.  Coach Salscheider is excited about the growth his young team displayed throughout the course of the 2013-14 season, and has high hopes for the future development and success that awaits Maranatha basketball in the coming years.

Tanner MosesEntering his fourth season, Tanner Moses is an example of consistency for the Sabercats, with career numbers of 35.1 FG%, 6.75 PPG, 2.5 APG, and nearly 80.0 FT%. Moses started all but four games last season, and averaged the second highest minutes per game, at 27.7. Moses has been awarded the most-valuable defensive player team award two out of three seasons and will look to continue his defensive specialties this year.

Brady MosesBrady Moses is coming off of a tremendous 2013-14 season, averaging a team-high

19 points per game on 45% shooting from both the field and three point line. This incredible output garnered NCCAA 1st Team All-Region and Freshman of the Year

recognition, as well as 1st Team All-Conference and Rookie of the Year awards in the AD3I. Moses will look to continue his success with his team this season.

David WentholdWenthold was the team’s three-point specialist last year, netting an average of two three-point field goals a game on nearly 45% shooting. He received Honorable Mention recognition in the postseason AD3I awards, and was also given the Coach’s Team Award for the 2013-14 season.

Clayton MorrisonClayton Morrison will begin the year as the starting

point guard for the Sabercats, coming off a season last year in which he notched a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio throughout 24 games. The 6-1 guard also contributed

nearly 5 points per game on 30% shooting, and often led the fast-break off his own rebound. He averaged 4.5 rebounds per game.

Akins added to the Maranatha Hall of FameCoach Akins’ accomplishments at Maranatha are very diverse and always sprinkled with humor. As a student in the early years

at Maranatha, Rich was a class officer and participated in Fine Arts events. He played on the football team from 1972 – 1975. During his junior and senior years, the team won two championships. Coach Akins taught at Maranatha Baptist Academy for fifteen years, served as the school administrator for six years, and was head football coach for thirty years. During his time as head football coach, his teams tied or won 10 Indian Trails Conference championships. Dr. Akins impacted the lives of many collegiate athletes during his six years as Maranatha’s athletics director. His involvement in Fine Arts events and as a public speaker span the whole time he served at Maranatha. Though Coach would crack a joke or down-play the impact he has had on a countless number of lives, those individuals bear testimony to the impact he has had. He continues to serve the Lord as the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Jefferson.

Coach Akins was honored on August 29, 2014 with induction into the Maranatha Athletics Hall of Fame. His plaque reads: “In recognition of his accomplishments on the football field as a Maranatha Crusader (1972-1975) and off the field as a Christian educator, coach, athletic director, and pastor; and for his dedication to our Maranatha Crusader and Sabercat athletes and athletic competition. As an intercollegiate athlete in the formative years of athletics at Maranatha, Dr. Akins exemplified the spirit, enthusiasm, and work ethic that Maranatha Baptist University desires to instill in all its athletes.  As a coach, athletic director, and teacher in Christian education, Dr. Akins has influenced the lives of countless young people, instilling these same qualities in others as he continues to minister in the local church for the cause of Jesus Christ. Dr. Akins’ legacy and testimony, both on and off the field of competition, shall ever remain as a testament to the Lord Jesus Christ and to Maranatha Baptist University Athletics.”

Head Coach Clayton MorrisonMorrison has a chance for a three-peat, after capturing consecutive NCCAA DII National Championships in 2013 and 2014. Morrison’s 22nd season will come with a young but talented squad. He has built a program that competes annually for NCCAA national championships. The Sabercats took third place in the NCCAA DII National Tournament in 2008 and 2010, and advanced to the championship game in 2007, as well as four years in a row, from 2011-2014.  Coach Morrison’s résumé includes regional coach of the year on numerous occasions as well as national coach of the year. In 1999 Coach Morrison’s team won the NCCAA National Championship and

finished second in the Lake Michigan Conference.  Morrison is a 1989 graduate of Maranatha and received his master’s in physical education and coaching from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Aside from coaching the women’s basketball team, he is also the defensive coordinator for the football team and assistant softball coach.

2013-14 Women’s Basketball ReviewIn his twenty first year at the helm for the Maranatha women’s basketball team and his last season as a Crusader, Coach Clayton Morrison began the 2013-14 season with only four players returning to the roster having graduated four very accomplished seniors. The Crusaders struggled throughout the opening stretch of the year, going 7-12 from November through January. The team would find their stride for the remaining ten games of the season as the driven squad finished 8-2 throughout February and March to win their second straight national title. Highlights include defeating Northland International University at home as well as sweeping through both the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament and NCCAA DII National Tournament to win back-to-back National Championships. Averaging 58 points per game on 38% percent shooting from the field, the

Crusaders were paced by a strong, balanced attack, which witnessed five players tally averages of nine points or more. Maranatha would complete their second straight national championship season with an even record of 14-14, 10-10 in NCCAA play. They edged out a winning home record of 6-5, while averaging well over 100 spectators at home events. The Crusaders were able to overcome their weaknesses thanks to strong defense, which gained an average of eight steals a game while notching five defensive blocks.

Leading the campaign was senior Laci Peterson. Peterson, who received a landslide of awards including AD3I 1st Team All-Conference, NCCAA 2nd Team All-American, NCCAA All-Tournament Team, and Team MVP, finished the year with marks of 14.8 PPG, 44% FG%, 10.3 RPG, 3.0 APG, and 5.4 BLK. Other influential contributors include senior Erin Steuerwald (10.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 2.3 STL) and senior Allison Schulz (9.8 PPG, 34.1 3PT%, 5.5 RPG). Steuerwald claimed 2nd Team All-Conference for the AD3I, as well as the team’s Coach’s Award, while Schulz was given an AD3I Honorable Mention. Despite the loss of these three seniors next year, Coach Morrison is excited about the opportunity to defend their national title during the 2014-15 season.

Stacie RossRoss returns for her second year as a player for the Maranatha basketball women’s team. The senior participated in the 2012-13 championship season as a transfer sophomore, playing in 30 games and averaging 5.6 points with 4.3 rebounds per game. Now one of the leaders on the squad, Ross will play a key role in guiding this year’s young team to the same past success in NCCAA postseason play.

Stacy ReinkeReinke is coming off the 2013-14 season, averaging more than 9.5 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Reinke has helped lead Maranatha to NCCAA DII National Championships in both of her first two seasons on the team, and looks to build upon that success for this upcoming year. This stretch player can hold her own at both guard and forward, and will use her experience and shooting to lead the Sabercats this season.
