The Waratah ClubBy Dot Wylie (pictured with

volunteer Joe)

Every Monday morning I go to Waratah Club It is a Seniors Club

for all agesWe play all sorts of games

And a bus takes us there and back home

Sally is the head of staffAnd is mainly in the office

She prints our colourful programs And her cooking

is in demandLorraine is second in

charge And helps in the Scrabble team

She cooks nice scones with jam and cream And if we don’t behave

ourselvesShe ‘belts us all up on the bus’

Tony is our driver and a very brainy chap He does the Crossword and the 9 Letterword

And if we don’t guess the answers He might think

that we are boredSome of us play Scrabble or

Rummy O Some days we drive down by the sea And have cake

and coffee or a cup of tea Another time we have fish and

chipsAnd stop for an ice-cream in a

coneA volunteer we just call him Joe Helps serve our dinner

and sweets He goes outside to get ‘fresh air’

But he really smokes a fag while out there

Vikki and Jude man the office And spend all day pressing buttons Making calls and solving problems You could say they are busy

bodiesThen there is Gabby a

volunteer She waits till all the mess is clear

Then washes all the cutlery and plates Because a dish wash machine she hates

We really are a nutty mob but have lots of fun I am probably the ‘Cheeky

one’But they all seem to like my jokes And now I am

done!

Affinity Club EventsNedlands Affinity Club activities are open to all seniors and are held at Nedlands Community Centre and Dalkeith Hall, 97 Waratah Avenue, unless otherwise stated.

Affinity Wellness DayWednesday 17 June June marked the date of our inaugural Wellness Day here at Nedlands Community Care and held in the Dalkeith Hall. A total of 40 people gathered to take part in the day and there were no restrictions as to who could come along, just a keen interest to participate and gain a better understanding as to what ‘Wellness’ could mean.

In general, wellness means a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit to help ensure an overall feeling of well-being.

The program offered a smorgasbord of different activities to take part in, relating to gaining a sense of Wellness. Activities included Introduction to Tai chi, Tai chill and the lesser known Shibashi which incorporates deeply relaxing movements which can help you feel energised. Also included in the program was a demonstration of Argentine Tango and presentations by Earth Carers and Hearing Health. Possibly the most engaging and enjoyable of the day’s activities was the presentation of LaughterYoga which most

of the attendees participated in.

The day generated a lot of discussion and input from participants with ideas and thoughts for future events shared over the tea and coffee served with the fabulous catering for morning and afternoon tea and lunch.

A Snapshot of Out and About - Past Events

Jarrahdale Café on the Dam was a popular outing and is often requested. With new volunteers facilitating this trip, our Out ‘n’ Abouters were treated to a scenic drive around the dam before heading inside for lunch.

The views of the Serpentine Dam and National Park were breathtaking from the Café which boasts a gift shop and a wonderful display of historic photographs of the area.

Thanks to Marion for her feedback from the outing.

Recent request from Out ‘n’ Abouters has been for outings to visit shopping centers out of their usual shopping areas.

Hence our recent visit in June to the Galleria Shopping Centre in Morley. Other recent visits to Garden City and Carousel were seen as a welcome addition to our current range of outings and we will visit other centres in the lead up to Christmas.

Mystery Scenic Tours happen once a month and one of our wonderful volunteers is Tim, who tells a bit about the July outing. Our Mystery Tour destination was Woodman Point Reserve. After collecting the troops we set off along Alfred Road towards Swanbourne Beach then along the coast to Fremantle. It was a perfect warm and sunny winter’s day. The ocean was calm and Rottnest stood out on the horizon. It was tempting to stop and dip one’s toes in the water.Onward through Fremantle past the Old Gaol and Markets, we travelled south along Hampton Road.We were awestruck by the development occurring along the way. The Old Power Station was a reminder of

times past.As we got nearer, we were relieved to see that development had overtaken the skin tannery and there was no olfactory assault! (I remember the pong from my childhood

journeys along this route to Rockingham.)On our right was the new Port Coogee development – a new housing estate and marina. Onward and soon we arrived at the regional park, where we had a bite to eat. After a short tour of the area we headed home.

WA Museum – Press Photo Exhibitionand‘Lost Diggers’. Out ‘n’ Abouters braved the July school holiday crowd at the museum, to marvel at the (at times confronting) pictures published around the world in the Press Photo Exhibit. Subjects were varied, from recent wartime atrocities to photos of daily life.

The Lost Diggers Exhibit, gloomy setting and wonderful old photos, along with letters to family, gave us an insight into the hard lives of the soldiers.

Out ‘n’ About visited the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in the QE11 Medical Centre, named in honour of the late Harry Perkins, whose vision played a major role in the creation of the Institute.

A tour of the building allowed us a glimpse at some of the areas of medical research conducted at the Centre. Two huge MRI scans are on display, with LCD monitors moving across the scans and

stopping on sections of the body to describe related research. Everyone was most

impressed at the technology. Lunch at the Café Anatomy was varied, tasty and well priced

and the coffee was great.

Health TipsStaying healthy in winterWinter is often a welcome change in Western Australia after our long, hot summers. But as we live in a temperate climate we do experience quite significant drops in temperatures, heavy rainfall and storms.Colds and flu are particularly common in winter with more than 200 viruses which can cause the common cold.Take steps to protect yourself fromcolds and flu this season. To do this you need to:•get immunised and protectyourself from flu.

•cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

•throw tissues in the bin after you use them.•wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.

•use alcohol based hand sanitisers.•avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread this way.

•try to avoid close contact withpeople who have a flu-like illness.

If you have a flu-like symptomsyou should:•stay home•limit contact with other people to keep from infecting them.

No treatment will cure your cold, or make it go away more quickly, but if you get plenty of rest and stay hydrated you can expect to recover quicker.
