PARKS

Saxon Park is Nor-man’s newest Community Park—the first one to be developed since Griffin Park was built in the 1980’s. The City has actually owned the land since 1997—when it was given as a gift to the Parks and Recreation Department by the Saxon family (owners of Saxon Publishing, which had its headquarters on the land next to the park). Their only requests when giving it to the City was that the land be developed as a park; and that the park be named after their patriarch—John Saxon, Jr. These were very easy to agree to in return for a 67 acre site located in one of the fastest-growing parts of town. More specifically, the park is the land on the south side of State Highway 9, at the 36th Avenue SE intersection. The park entry will be on 36th Ave-nue, about ¼-mile south of the highway. The land was not developed immediately after the land was given, which allowed many different versions of park plans to be proposed for the site. At one time or another, ideas ranged from building a junior golf facility to clearing the land for sports fields to building a nature center and walking trails in the park, which has a variety of terrain and natural areas in it. There is an arm of Blue Creek that passes through the park close to Highway 9; and there are some areas that are open prairie land, or used to be prai-rie—but have been filled with cedar trees over the years. The Parks and Recreation department finally used the 2009 Parks System Master Plan to help guide the design for this land. It was determined that large parts of the park (espe-cially along the creek) would be left in a natural state—but we would work with local runners and school coaches to design Norman’s first Cross-Country running course at Saxon Park. The final trail layout was designed by the OU Track & Field Cross-Country coaches in 2010. Once the layout was

done, a path was cleared through the trees and along the open areas for a looped trail that included a 50-yard wide competitive starting area and a large 2-Kilometer outer trail, along with a secondary 1-Kilometer route connected to the outer trail. There are also shorter trail spurs—each with direction and distance markers planned to help run-ners or walkers stay on course and not get lost in this large park. Other areas of the park will be used for playgrounds, picnicking, walking on paved trails with fitness stations and even a lake, in later phases. With the help of two $200,000 grant projects received from the State of Oklahoma’s Recreational Trails Program, ground was broken in 2011 for the first phase of the park development. The crushed granite cross-country trail, entry road and parking area are complete; and the trail distance markers and trail head warm up area will be con-structed this fall and winter. A contract will also be awarded soon to build the 1/3-mile concrete walking trail and fitness stations, while the park maintenance crews work to clear many of the invasive red cedar trees that have choked-out much of the native trees and plants in the park over the decades that it sat undeveloped. More parts of the park will be built over the coming years to complete all the things shown in the Master Plan. Once construction is complete at Highway 9 and 36th Avenue this winter, it will be a MUCH easier trip to get to the park—but it will be well worth the trip!

RECREATION

By: Jessie Blackwell - Norman Parks and Recreation

The familiar sound of ‘Good Ole Rocky Top Tennessee’ rings through the halls of Whittier Recreation Center every Tuesday and Thursday as The Okie Stompers per-fect their fancy footwork. Their movements may resem-ble tap dancing, square dancing and even Irish dancing, however, the way the heel and the toe hit the ground and the sound of the tap made by the oxford shoes provides a sound that amplifies the music accompanied by the dance. This is clogging. The Okie Stompers Clogging Company began as Sooner Clogging Company over 30 years ago in Norman. Now, three groups of enthusiastic individuals are led by Linda Jones, who has been teaching The Okie Stompers since 2000. Beginner’s classes are offered to new cloggers and there are clog dancing groups for 6-12 year olds as well as teenagers and young adults. “Our group usually does about 15 performances a year, everywhere from the State Fair stage in Oklahoma City to volunteer performances at local nursing homes and veteran’s centers,” says Ms. Jones. Other performances that Jones is most proud of include Oklahoma City’s Festival of the Arts, the San Antonio Riv-erwalk, and opening for ‘Country Tonite’ in Branson, MO. The group also attends numerous competitions every year with medals won for each performance. The best ex-perience the group has had was being invited to perform

in Honolulu, HI. “Honolulu was the most intense performance to coordi-nate,” she says. While in Hawaii, The Okie Stompers were invited to the Polynesian Cultural Center and were the first group to ever dance at the USS Battleship Missouri Memorial. The mesmerizing movements of the clog dancing not only provide a fun experience, but also serve as a great way to stay fit. “Clogging is great exercise, very cardio oriented,” Ms. Jones says. “It is good for your heart, legs and lungs—but also good for your brain to remember the steps and the music.”“Few activities stimulate as wide a variety of brain sys-tems as dancing does,” says Daniel Amen, M.D., author of Magnificent Mind at Any Age. “Dancing requires every-thing from coordination and organization to planning and judgment.”The Okie Stompers are always open to new members who are interested in a new, fun way to stay healthy. An 8-week class will start at Whittier Recreation Center in January 2015. Please contact Linda Jones at (405) 360-8018 to join in or for more information. It is exercise you look forward to and clogging always beats jogging.
