For Elders’ fleet manager Jeff Howarth, one of the non-negotiables in the forklift tender process was the ability to meet the requirement of having one forklift at each of its outlets.

Toyota Material Handling Australia’s (TMHA’s) ability to meet this requirement, and provide the associated service and backup network, was one of the factors that tipped the balance in TMHA’s favour.

“It was a critical consideration for us, given that the nature of our business means we’re operating in some pretty remote locations,” Jeff says. “Being able to not only supply the forklifts, but most importantly provide service and backup, either directly or through reliable local agents right around the country, was very important to us.”

“Being situated largely outside urban areas also means the reliability of our equipment is vital,” Jeff says. “We need to be confident that our equipment is well built, robust and up to the task. We’ve been impressed with the Toyota forklifts and they’ve proven to be reliable and capable of handling any job we require.”

TMHA’s willingness to meet with Elders and recommend the best solution for their needs was also a deciding factor in its decision.

“Obviously, we’re not forklift experts,” Jeff says, “so Toyota’s on-site inspection made the selection process easier. Toyota took the time

to come out to assess our needs and make recommendations about the type of equipment we needed to ensure our order met our specific requirements.

“This was a real point of difference between Toyota and some of the other providers we considered, and it’s one that we really appreciated,” he says.

TMHA corporate account manager Peter Lown said Elders’ requirements provide a good example of the range of services that Toyota can provide.

“We’re always willing and able to meet with prospective customers and work out their particular needs. No one benefits if they end up with the wrong equipment, so it pays to take the time to ensure they get the right forklift from the outset.”

With the benefit of TMHA’s advice Elders settled on a range of Toyota’s 8-Series FG forklifts, with capacity from 1.8 to 3 tonnes. The forklifts are currently in operation at 50 of its branches throughout Australia.

Toyota’s popular and award-winning 8-Series forklifts contain a number of leading safety features, including Toyota’s System of Active Stability technology that helps prevent tip-overs and an Operator Presence Sensing system that stops the forklift from moving unless the operator is correctly seated at the controls.

Other features include a large, easily accessible workspace with a wide foot area ergonomically designed controls and excellent forward visibility. The powerful and fuel-efficient engine tuned to minimise noise levels in enclosed environments.

“The 8-Series is our most popular range of engine-powered forklifts and has all the safety, productivity, ergonomic and performance features Elders required in a sturdy and reliable package,” Peter Lown says.

Jeff explains that the forklifts are used primarily to load and unload trucks and customers’ vehicles. They handle a pretty broad range of goods, from pallets of fertiliser, to feed or fence posts,” he says. “They are comfortable for our staff, easy to operate and are well suited to our needs. They don’t miss a beat.”

The process of introducing the Toyota forklifts around the Elders network has been smooth since the tender was awarded nearly 18 months ago.

“We’ve had very few problems,” Jeff says. “The rollout of the Toyota forklifts has been well organised. The information and follow-up we receive from Toyota is thorough and complete. On the rare occasion that we need extra information our account manager responds quickly and makes sure we have what we need.”

After positive experiences with other Toyota products, the quality and reliability of the Toyota equipment came as no surprise for Elders.

“Our procurement manager had used Toyota forklifts in the past at another company, and he had good experiences there so we knew what to expect with the new forklifts,” Jeff says.

“We also run a couple of hundred Toyota Prados in our fleet that are used by our staff when visiting customers’ properties. As you’d expect many are in pretty remote locations so the toughness and reliability of the Prados makes them a good option for us.”

Elders provides a broad range of agricultural products and services through its 370 outlets primarily located in rural and regional areas right across the country. Operating largely outside metropolitan areas meant Elders had unique requirements when it came time to tender for a new forklift provider.

The iF Design Award is one of the world’s mostly highly regarded design competitions and has been presented annually since 1954 by the iF International Forum Design, based in Hanover, Germany.

Since taking out its fi rst iF Design Award in 2009 Toyota has received the award for six different products.

A total of 4,783 entries by 2,102 participants from 53 countries were received this year across the awards’ 16 categories.

A 53-member jury comprised of international experts from 20 nations met in late January in Hamburg, Germany, to assess the entries and determine the winners of each category.

Toyota’s 8-Series forklift range has previously received a Special Mention in the German Design Awards (the fi rst forklift to do so) and won Japan’s Good Design Award.

Toyota Material Handling Australia’s executive vice president and chief operating offi cer Steve Takacs said the iF Design Awards recognise the exceptional features and ergonomic design found in all Toyota Material Handling products.

“Winning international design awards like this is testament to the thought that goes into all our material handling equipment, ensuring we offer not only the most reliable and durable products, but also the most operator-friendly,” he said.

In 2014 Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) launched the new 8-Series 3.5 to 8-tonne forklift range, extending its industry-leading forklift safety, fuel-saving and ergonomic features to all its internal combustion forklifts up to 8-tonne capacity.

Highlights of the range include a new 65kW electronic fuel injection-equipped 3.7-litre LPG engine offering fuel savings of up to 20 per cent compared with the superseded model.

Key safety features include Toyota’s exclusive System of Active Stability, which helps reduce the likelihood of lateral roll-overs.

Other features of the Toyota 8-Series 3.5 to 8-tonne forklift range include a redesigned chassis with fully stamped steel plate construction and ergonomic improvements like increased fl oor space and a larger step.

Unveiled March 2015 in Europe, the latest

Toyota hybrids have had around 80 per cent

of their parts redesigned as the team also sets

its sights on a maiden victory in the Le Mans

24-hour classic.

Pre-season testing of more than 25,000km

has confirmed an overall increase in

performance with powertrain updates now

delivering in excess of 1,000ps (735kW) from

the TS040’s electric motors and 3.7-litre V8

petrol engine.

The championship-winning cars also benefit

from updated aerodynamics, a revised front

end including crash structure, additional

weight saving and modifications to the

super capacitor construction to increase

performance.

New suspension kinematics to reduce tyre

wear have been adopted in the face of stricter

limits on the number of sets of slicks available

for practice and for qualifying and racing.

Toyota world champion lifts performance World Endurance Champion Toyota Racing has improved the power and efficiency of its TS040 Hybrid race cars as it seeks to retain its driver and manufacturer titles in the 2015 series.

TMH Torque I 8

The team’s leading hybrid engineer Hisatake

Murata said most areas of the petrol-electric

powertrain had been improved as part of a

huge effort to upgrade the cars.

“We fully expect to see a performance

improvement from the hybrid system,

especially over race distances and at every

circuit,” he said.

The unveiling of the 2015 cars coincided

with the announcement of a change of team

leadership with president Yoshiaki Kinoshita to

return to Japan in April.

His replacement is Toshio Sato who has vast

experience of hybrid technology and spent

several years with the team as a senior engine

engineer during Toyota’s Formula 1 days.

Mr Kinoshita said the endurance racing

challenge this year would be greater than

ever with four manufacturers in the leading

category all presenting different technical

solutions - Toyota, Audi, Porsche and Nissan.

“We have worked very hard to improve our

TS040 Hybrid and so far the testing results

are encouraging, but there is a long way to

go,” he said.

Last year, Toyota became the first Japanese

company to win the world championship

with five wins from eight races while Anthony

Davidson and Sébastien Buemi also won the

drivers’ title.

They will be joined in the #1 car this year by

Kazui Nakajima while the cockpit of the #2 car

will be shared between Alex Wurz, Stéphane

Sarrazin and Mike Conway. Former Toyota

F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi becomes test and

reserve driver.

The 2015 season kicked off at Silverstone,

England, on April 12, followed by Spa-

Francorchamps, Belgium, on May 2, the

Le Mans 24 Hours in France on June 13 to

14 and the new round at the Nürburgring in

Germany (August 30).

The eight-race campaign concludes with races

in Austin, Texas (Sept 19), Fuji Speedway,

Japan (Oct 11), Shanghai, China (Nov 1) and

Bahrain (Nov 21).

The 8FBRE reach forklift models add to Toyota’s range of 8-Series counterbalance battery-electric and internal combustion engine forklifts. Lifting capacities range from 1.2 to 1.6 tonnes with a maximum lift height of 8.5 metres.

TMHA national sales and product manager Jim Lobow said the new 8FBRE reach trucks provide a versatile option for companies looking for a simple, practical reach forklift that gets the job done safely and effi ciently.

“Many of our customers carry out a range of tasks over the course of their working day. We see this new range of reach trucks being well suited to small to medium sized businesses who would typically use the forklift during a single shift operation,” Mr Lobow said.

“Some of the key features include the degree of control on offer and the fast and smooth operation. All fork movements are made via easy-to-use fi ngertip control levers, the pedal layout is similar to what you’d fi nd in a car, and the electronically controlled 180 degree

or 360 degree steering provides easy and precise manoeuvrability.”

Mr Lobow said another key advantage of the new 8FBRE reach forklift is the degree of adjustability and customisation available to operators.

“Ergonomically sound design is the basis for good operator performance,” he said.

“The seat and steering console are fully adjustable by the operator, and the height of the cab fl oor can also be adjusted to three different positions if required,” he said.

“Operators can also customise the settings for maximum speed and acceleration, automatic braking and steering sensitivity.”

As with all Toyota forklifts, the new 8FBRE includes a number of important safety features as standard, including PIN-code start-up, automatic parking brake, clear view mast and overhead guard, tilting forks (available as an option) emergency cut-off and electronic speed control.

“Another feature is the regenerative braking

technology that transfers brake energy back into the battery to provide extended run times between charging and help reduce operating costs,” Mr Lobow said.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) will shortly introduce a new range of narrow aisle battery-electric reach forklift trucks that provide safe, reliable and comfortable operation for a range of applications.

YEARS IN AUS TRALIA

CELEBRATING

30 1st Choice Group chooses Toyota Huskis A family run Gold Coast earthmoving company has expanded and upgraded its fl eet, commissioning two new Toyota Huski skid-steer loaders.

1st Choice Group based at Upper Coomera also has a new tipper truck built by Hino, another member of the Toyota group of companies.

The company commissioned its new Toyota Huski 5SDK-8 skid-steer loaders late last year, one as a replacement for an earlier model Toyota 4SDK-8 and the other as an additional unit.

Company principal Travis Northcott and wife Kassie have always used Toyota Huski skid-steer loaders since founding the company in 2006.

“Toyota is tops for reliability, operator-friendliness and serviceability,” Mr Northcott said. “I wouldn’t consider any other skid-steer loader.

“The serviceability is impressive; I know that from doing the service in-house. There is easy access to the key components and the fact that so little maintenance is required keeps the machines ‘in the dirt’ for longer.”

Mr Northcott said his Huski skid-steer loaders perform a wide range of general contracting and civil works across south-east Queensland.

“Being in the earthmoving industry is not just a job for our family-run business: it is what we do best and what we know best.

“In terms of civil works, last year we completed a 10-acre mushroom farm at Yalata, halfway to Brisbane. More recently we completed a new service station/convenience store on the Gold Coast,” he said.

General contracting work includes working with plumbers, electricians and landscapers.

“We bought our 700 Series Hino FS2848 truck four months ago to haul our tag trailer, which weighs 20 tonnes when loaded. I am looking for longevity, so I chose a truck from a proven brand with power and a big gearbox,” he said.

Mr Northcott said buying his Huski skid-steer

loaders through Toyota Material Handling

Australia’s Brisbane branch was also a

breeze.

“I called area sales manager Syd Williams to

place the order and within days he was here

with the two new Huskis,” he said.

Mr Williams said he wasn’t surprised that

Travis and the 1st Choice team had invested

in loaders and a truck from the Toyota Group

of companies.

“He loves Toyota, as most Queenslanders

do,” Mr Williams said.

The Toyota Huski 5SDK-8 is one of six Huski

skid-steer loader models offered nationally by

Toyota Material Handling.

It has a spacious cabin opening for smooth

entry and exit, along with an easy-to-read

instrument panel and low vibration and low

fatigue control levers, providing outstanding

operator comfort.

Hino launches 500 Series FE 1426 Auto

Hino Australia has boosted the versatility and appeal of its 500 Series medium duty truck range with the addition of new long-wheelbase variants of the FE 1426 Auto.

TMH Torque I 14

www.toyotamaterialhandling.com.au 1800 425 438

Combining an Allison automatic transmission with the Hino J07E-TN engine has created an FE that is accessible to a wider range of drivers while being capable of doing the work of a larger vehicle.

The 500 Series FE 1426 Auto’s 6.4-litre five-cylinder engine generates a class-leading 191kW and 794Nm from 1500rpm, for superior performance and carrying capacity.

The Allison 2500 series transmission uses five forward speeds and features a torque converter with lock-up clutch.

Hino chose the transmission because it meets its stringent quality, durability and reliability requirements while offering smooth, user-friendly drive characteristics and the ability to maintain optimum engine speeds for increased efficiency.

The 500 Series FE 1426 Auto has a GVM of 14 tonnes and is able to carry payloads previously reserved for larger vehicles in a more agile and economical package.

It is available in single cab configuration in short, medium, long and extra-long wheelbases ranging from 3750 to 5500mm.

The 500 Series FE 1426 Auto also comes with the safety and comfort features the 500 Series is known for, including the ISRI 6860 driver’s seat with integrated safety belt, ergonomically designed cabin, ABS brakes, SRS driver’s airbag and ECE-R29 crash safety compliance.

Hino Australia Chairman and CEO Steve Lotter said the launch of the 500 Series FE 1426 Auto demonstrates Hino’s commitment to offering greater choice in its products, and is an important part of the brand’s push for automatic transmission models.

“The market has been demanding more ‘two pedal’ options in light and medium duty truck lines, and Hino has responded with an increased number of automatic transmission choices,” Mr Lotter said.

“The 500 Series FE Auto brings a very well rounded package to the market and allows fleets access to a larger pool of drivers thanks to its automatic transmission.

“It also has the potential to cut down on gearbox maintenance that may be required with drivers who are less experienced with a manual transmission.

“The 500 Series FE Auto is what we like to call a ‘smart truck’ as it is capable of carrying payloads usually reserved for our FG and GH models, but in a lighter, more nimble and cost-effective package.

“We believe it is the right truck for this sector of the Australian truck market, and we expect it to do great things for Hino and our customers,” Mr Lotter said.

The 12 apprentices were drawn from around the country and were accompanied by mentors from their respective TMHA branches.

TMHA national technical advisor Gerry Larney said the company received the highest number of applicants in the 11 years

of the apprentice program.

“We received more than 1000 applications

from around the country for our 2015

apprentice intake,” Mr Larney said.

“This is the biggest by far since we began our

apprentice program back in 2005, and the

latest intake brings the number of apprentices

currently training around the country to 45.”

As part of the induction the apprentices

were given presentations on Toyota values,

company policies and expectations, safety

procedures and a history of Toyota.

At the conclusion of the presentations

the apprentices met with members of the

senior TMHA management team, including

president and CEO Aki Nimura and executive

vice president and COO Steve Takacs, before

being presented with their tools of trade.

Mr Larney said TMHA recognises the

importance of apprentices to the business.

“It’s a real investment in our future,” he said.

“We instigated the annual apprentice intake over a decade ago to ensure we have a strong skills base to support us as our business grows.”

Mr Takacs, himself a former forklift technician, said TMHA was at the forefront of forklift technician training in Australia, and pioneered specialist TAFE training for Australia’s forklift technicians.

“Our customers benefit by having a skilled

and knowledgeable team of technicians

ready to provide high-quality back-up for

entire range of Toyota material handling

equipment,” Mr Takacs said.

TMHA supports the training and development

of its forklift technicians by holding an annual

National Skills Contest aimed at keeping

Toyota forklift technicians at the cutting-edge

of industry standards.
