ABOUT THE ROUNDHOUSE

TABLE OF CONTENTS

GETTING TO THE ROUNDHOUSEWalking from Granville Street, head east fi ve blocks down Davie • Underground pay parking is avail-able (access off Drake) for $2/hour; $12 max/7am-6pm weekends and holidays and $3/6-11pm everyday. The underground parking closes at 11pm but shows that run later than 11pm will have access through the Roundhouse.

ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSIONIn September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood repre-sentatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff , undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions:The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to fi nd new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, trans-forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, part-nerships, and our own productions.

The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is jointly operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation and the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society.

ROUNDHOUSE SOCIETY

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEThe Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre is unique as a community centre. Not only are we situated in a beautiful piece of Vancouver's history, but we are also part of a city-wide initiative to promote arts and culture. This means we serve not only the local community, but the city as a whole. There are a number of great events and programs to enjoy this coming season. On December 21st, the Roundhouse will celebrate the winter solstice with the Solstice Lantern Festival, a multicultural array of lanterns, fire, singing, dancing, music, and storytelling. Then, on January 31, you can bring your kids to the Performance Centre to enjoy free movies.Harpist Elisa Thorn will showcase a broad spectrum of original music in February. From jazz to indie to avant-garde, Thorn uses the harp in unconventional, innovative ways in Kaleidoscope. This program is just one of many that demonstrates how the Roundhouse serves its mandate to support artists in their respective fields while providing all citizens of our community access to the arts. Our 2nd Annual Art Mart will be take place in July; artists can contact the Roundhouse to participate. And don’t forget to join us on March 26 for our annual Easter Egg Hunt.I also want to congratulate Kokoro Dance on their 30th anniversary. Kokoro is one of our longest standing arts partners, and the Roundhouse is proud to host the Vancouver International Dance Festival again in March.Thank you to everyone who participated in another successful Beerlesque fundraising event last October. The funds raised by Beerlesque support many valuable programs the Roundhouse is proud to offer. This season, we will kick off our “Name a Seat & Park Your Caboose” Campaign to replace the well-loved seats in the Performance Centre. The new seats will not only increase the audience capacity of the theatre, but will be a more comfortable place to park your caboose.Special thanks to our volunteers, too. Volunteers do everything from staffing our 400+ special events to teaching Tai Chi classes, blogging about our community engagement, running the Engine Pavilion, and everything in-between. Volunteering is fun way to participate and set an example of constructive contribution to your community. If you, or your friends, are interested in volunteering, or becoming a member of our Board of Directors, please give us a call.

Craig GilesPresident, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

VOLUNTEER AT THE ROUNDHOUSEVolunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our thriving community. Without the hours of volunteer service offered to the Roundhouse by our community members, we would not be able to do the wonderful work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees, and to various environmental and cultural events.Currently 207 volunteers give their time and energy to the Roundhouse, and these volunteers are as varied as the programs we offer. From special event to administrative volunteers, they all play an active role at the Roundhouse, and we truly could not do the work we do without their support.

JOIN US! ARE YOU:• Over the age of 14?• Comfortable engaging with a diverse group of people?• Interested in arts and culture?• Able to commit up to 6 months of volunteer service?• Able to work as part of a team?• Looking to be physically, socially, and mentally active?• Ready to have some fun?

WE HOPE TO MEET YOU SOONIf this describes you, then we want to hear from you. Visit www.roundhouse.ca and click on the Get Involved tab, then Volunteer Opportunities which outlines our volunteer openings in detail. KOKORO DANCE: 30TH ANNIVERSARY!Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi formed Kokoro Dance in 1986. In the past 30 years, they have choreographed and performed 190 dance works across Canada, Europe, the United States, and South America. Kokoro Dance has been voted ‘Best of Vancouver’ by the readers of The Georgia Straight every year that the readers’ poll has been taken. In 2000 Barbara and Jay initiated the Vancouver International Dance Festival that has since presented 231 dance artists and companies to more than 60,000 people.

In 2014, Vancouver City Council unanimously approved a recommendation to give Kokoro Dance office and studio space in the Woodward’s building. The premises are shared with the Vancouver International Dance Festival, Vancouver Moving Theatre, and Raven Spirit Dance. Kokoro Dance is renovating a dance studio in the Woodward’s Atrium and a production studio in the Woodward’s basement with the intention of making both accessible and affordable for the performing arts and DTES communities.

NEW COURSES

It's not often that all of the Roundhouse staff are able to gather in one place, but it happened last September 2015 for our in-service training. Just over 40 of us spent the evening in the Performance Centre reviewing topics such as workplace health and safety & updated policies and procedures. We had some fun with a team challenge rally, and finally, we capped the night with a full-building fire drill.
