2016 AES Mid-Career Achievement Award Winner: Dr. Amy E. Herr

This year, AES has the pleasure of awarding the AES Mid-Career Award to Dr. Amy E. Herr. Amy has made significant contributions to electrophoretic research in multiple areas since she began as a mechanical engi-neering graduate student at Stanford. After completing her PhD, Amy accepted a research scientist position at Sandia National Laboratory in Livermore, California. In 2007, she moved to academia, joining the Depart-ment of Bioengineering at the University of California at Berkeley, where she now works as the

Lester John and Lynne Dewar Lloyd Distinguished Professor.

Amy’s research accomplishments have primarily centered around three areas. First, she has combined microfluidics with two-dimensional electrophoresis and mass spectrometry to achieve rapid and quantitative assessment of protein expression. This required extensive investigation of scale-dependent phenomena, such as her 2003 Analytical Chemistry publication entitled “On-Chip Coupling of Isoelectric Focusing and Free Solution Electrophoresis for Multi-Dimensional Separations.” Second, she has developed new technology for validating promising protein biomarkers in an automated way. Finally, Amy has devel-oped electrophoretic microfluidic platforms for rapid, analytical-grade quantitation of small sample volumes. Her landmark PNAS paper entitled “Microfluidic Immunoassays as Rapid Saliva-Based Clinical Diagnostics” has been cited over 300 times

since 2007.

Amy has helped organize several conferences including the AES annual meeting and Gordon Research Conference on the Physics of Microfluidics. She has served as a mentor and role model for many young investigators who are following in her footsteps. Amy’s boundless energy and enthusiasm is infectious. We look forward to seeing Amy speak at SciX this fall in Minneapolis. By Ed Goluch, Chemical Engineering Dept, Northeastern University

Dr. Labeed is an Associate Professor at the University of Surrey in the Centre for

Biomedical Engineering. Her research focuses on the application of dielectropho-

resis to diverse subject areas including stem cells, drug discovery, cancer diagno-

sis and circadian biology where she has developed an international portfolio of

collaborations. Dr. Labeed earned her first degree in Biochemistry from Univer-

sity of London, followed by a Masters in Clinical Biochemistry with Molecular

Biology and a Ph.D., both from the University of Surrey, and has also worked in

industry at Pfizer‘s Parke-Davis Research Centre in Cambridge. She has co-edited

a book for the Royal Society of Chemistry on microengineered detection methods.
