Connection2017 Partnership Property Management’s Award Edition

Corn hole, putt-putt golf, pumpkin carving, service projects, éclair

eating contest, and chair massage. With so many choices – almost everyone participated in some way and some participated in everything! The games were very competitive and team spirits were high. We all had a lot of fun and thanks to the generosity of our owners, who gave $10,000 to charities!

Special thanks to our team captains: Chris Gooding, Donna Wall, Emily DeMasters, Ginger Morris, Laura Kilmartin, Phil Howard, Tammy Douglas and Travis Walters. Their names were randomly drawn, not something they volunteered to do, and the job was tough! Orange Crush, captained by Emily DeMasters, came in first – winning a $5,000 donation for Habitat for Humanity. The Incredibles, captained by Tammy Douglas, came in second, securing a $2,000 donation to Avery’s Angels

Gastroschisis Foundation. The other teams played for Greensboro Urban Ministries, Children’s Home Society, Special Olympics, Mental Health Association of Greensboro, Alzheimers Association, and Breast Cancer Research. Each of these teams received a $500 donation.

Thanks to everyone that participated… a fun-time was had by all for a great cause!

So, Why Do We Work Here?

I recently challenged a group of corporate managers to think about why they were working at Partnership Property Management. Have you ever thought about

your reason for working with, and managing, apartments…particularly affordable housing?

Several of us attended a National meeting sponsored by The Council for Affordable and Rural Housing on June 12 through June 14, 2016. At this meeting, Partnership Property Management had the honor of watching two of our Site Managers receive National Site Manager of the Year Awards for their outstanding achievements and work on behalf of their residents and Partnership Property Management:

Don Bowen, Site Manager at Ivy Terrace Apartments in Bishopville, South Carolina Jackie Lee, Site Manager at Westminster East Apartments in Westminister, South Carolina, and Springbrook Apartments in Seneca, South Carolina.

Wow, a National award, I have never won one, have you? Jackie and Don are two wonderful, caring individuals, who go the extra mile for their residents.

Also at this same meeting, we watched 5 young students receive Scholarships from CARH to further their education. Two of these winners live in Partnership Property Management managed affordable housing. To qualify for the scholarships, these students had to currently live in affordable housing. Here are a few statements taken directly from the essays written by the winners, regarding affordable housing and what it means to them, their lives, and families:

Student 1 – “My mother, after getting accepted to an affordable housing apartment community, once again had pride in herself and being able to provide for us and give us a nice home. She was able to hang on to her dignity while working her way out of our financial crisis.”

Student 2 – “Due to having a stable living environment in affordable housing, I have been able to heal and redirect my life inward, to create a fulfilling empowering growth. My home remains stable and grounded. No matter what, I have a safe, clean home. My apartment is my refuge, my temple. Affordable housing was able to offer me a sigh of relief in a world where everything, including healthy food, utilities, and necessities are so expensive. There are families who are working to create stability for themselves, and with more affordable housing, more people will be able to thrive, heal, care, and contribute. Every moment makes a difference. Every person is here for a reason. Having affordable housing changes everything.”

Student 3 – “My father never helped us out, but I have a strong mother who has no fear in the world. With the help of affordable housing, she had been able to provide us with a comfortable and safe living arrangement. Our apartment community has provided us with a sense of community that makes us feel safe, secure, thrive, and grow. Life is not always easy, but tough times do not always last forever. For my mother and me, affordable housing has not been a hand out, but a hand up.”

Student 4 – “Affordable housing has given me the opportunity to provide a stable, loving home for my daughter. I am able to be present in her life…eating meals together, reading books, and playing games….rather than having to work a second or third job that would take me away from her just to pay the rent. Affordable housing has given me the opportunity to return to school, prepare for a professional career, and also enable me to be a positive role model for my daughter. She sees Mommy studying at night. Affordable housing is a

vital component that promotes diversity and upward mobility, and positively impacts the community as a whole.”

Student 5 – “Affordable housing has given my mom the financial assistance she needed to be able to be there for me, to raise me knowing right from wrong, and to guide me through my adolescence into adulthood. Affordable housing is not just an option, but a necessity for many families across our nation. I see no reason why every mother who is going it alone, or a broke graduate working entry level jobs, or veterans living with war-induced disabilities, should not have four walls to call their own without literally working themselves to death. I hope someday everyone gets the opportunities and blessings I have had bestowed upon me.”

So, why do we work so hard in our jobs, and care so much about what we do? Why do we work here? Yes, our paychecks do come in handy. But that deep satisfaction, that feeling of accomplishment, that passion that bubbles out, where does that come

from? Maybe our scholarship winners have helped us understand what it’s all about. We are helping to make a positive difference in the lives of many families. Maybe that’s why we care about our jobs, and continue to endure the many regulations and stressful situations from day to day.

Hang in there, it might just be worth it and make a difference in your life, and the lives of others.

Arbor Glen, Lenoir, NC

Regal Oaks Apartments, an existing 24 unit senior site in Hendersonville, NC, joined the Partnership Property Management

portfolio on January 1, 2017. Arbor Glen Apartments is a newly constructed 50 unit senior site in Lenoir, NC. It finished leasing up in time for the holidays! Beal Street Square, an 80 unit family site in Rocky Mount, NC, will begin its lease-up in early Spring. We also will have 10 rehabs in progress this year. These properties were built between 1976 and 1997. We are very excited about the updates that will be made at each of these apartment communities.
