2018 COOKIES WITH SANTAPERRY ALUMNI NEWSOnce A Pirate Always A Pirate!

On Sunday, December 2nd, the Perry High School Alumni Association hosted its first annual Cookies with Santa fundraiser. Santa and the alumni elves hosted approximately 175 children and their families at Manchester West for a festive afternoon. Activities included a picture with Santa, ornament decorating, making reindeer food, face painting, writing a letter to the North Pole, cookie decorating, holiday guessing games, picture coloring and of course, holiday cheer. A special thanks to Brian Verdi Photography and his

team. Brian was a very special elf—a guest of honor and he brought a few helpers who took great pictures! All pictures were emailed to our guests. We received great feedback from the community. In 2019 we plan to host the event again in early December. We hope you and your family can join the fun!

PERRY ALUMNI NEWSOnce A Pirate Always A Pirate!

2018 ALL CLASS REUNION BEST EVER!We know we’ve said this before, but it just keeps growing and getting better with each year! The 2018 dinner was another record breaker, with over 230 attending, spanning 7 decades. Three classes joined in to celebrate their most special 10-year milestone reunions; the Classes of 1958, 1968 and 1978. The Class of ‘68 had a remarkable turnout with over half of their classmates reuniting, some who had not seen each other since their graduation more than 50 years ago. This year we were blessed to have several PHS teens volunteer to help out in the kitchen. Their assistance was greatly appreciated.

This event is a wonderful way to enjoy a dinner where classmates can partake in a delicious catered dinner and spend an evening visiting with their classmates. Classes may request that an area be reserved specifically for their tables to ensure that they’re placed with their friends. There’s also an opportunity to tour the room sometime during the evening to connect with some of those upperclassmen, underclassmen, and old (no pun intended) neighbors and friends. Special “Look Who’s Here” documents are placed on each table and name tags are provided to help everyone in recognizing each other.

Plans are underway for the Class of ‘69 to join us for their golden 50th on September 21st as part of their weekend events. If you’d like assistance in planning your reunion, or need information, please call one of our Reunion Committee co-chairs; Linda Krivanek Clark at 440.417.2636, or Charon Collins LeBail at 440.479.3364.

The Class of 1958 reminiscing after 60 years. Good friends and a wonderful memorabilia display.

Some members of the Class of 1968 joined in the Perry Homecoming parade with a float of their own, kicking off a full weekend of festivities.

PHS volunteers and future Class of 2023 alums; Kaitlyn Newsome (daughter of Greg Newsome, ’94) and Isabelle and Grace McKoon (daughters of Sue Ritley McKoon, ‘96) made the evening especially pleasurable!

    ALUMNI IN THE MILITARY

his airframe selections with all special operations aircraft first. Knowing the background for the job, in combination with seeing the Osprey first hand helped his decision making. Chief Mapel wanted his son to attend college and get his bachelor’s degree then join the Air Force as a commissioned officer, because he regretted not following that same course himself. Chief went on to get his bachelor’s and master’s degrees while remaining enlisted. He has zero complaints about his career and would do it all over again but always wanted more for his kids. Starting his career as an electro-environmental maintainer for five years, Chief Mapel cross-trained to be a flight engineer on the MH-53. After 12 years he changed airframes, moving over to the CV-22 Osprey. Eight years later he would make Chief, forcing a cross-train to the AC-130W, as a special mission aviator. “One of the main reasons I joined and chose to do special operations was to try to make a difference in the world, so one day my kids didn’t have to,” said Chief Mapel. “Hopefully I was able to make a little bit of difference. The elder Mapel was no stranger to military influences growing up, his father was an U.S. Army infantrymen and his older brother was an U.S. Army Airborne Ranger. He also had several uncles that served in the Army and Marine Corps. “Their service definitely impacted my decision to join and carry forward the heritage, pride in our military and pride in our country,” said Mapel. With his own history in the special mission aviator world, Chief knows exactly what is in store for his son upon graduation. His apprehension is eased somewhat because he knows what is in store for Airman Mapel.

The family of Mark Mapel, Class of 1988, and his son David, who attended Perry Schools for a brief period in 2003 while his father was deployed, both give their family so much to be proud about as they serve our country in the United States Air Force at the same time! These American Heroes protect our freedom serving in Special Ops and on the same airframe CV-22 Osprey. We are pleased to share the following article by Staff Sgt. J.D. Strong II, 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs was published July 31, 2018:

Carrying on tradition: Father and son, now brothers in arms.U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Mark Mapel, 1st Special Operations Group chief enlisted manager standards and evaluations, poses with his son Airman 1st Class David Mapel, 58th Training Squadron CV-22 Osprey special mission aviator student, at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., July 25. Airman Mapel, is following in the footsteps of his father, Chief Mapel, as a CV-22 Osprey special mission aviator. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. J.D. Strong II) KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- “From this day to the ending of the world, but we in it shall be remembered—we few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother” - King in William Shakespeare’s Henry V. Airman 1st Class David Mapel, is following in the footsteps of his father, Chief Master Sergeant Mark Mapel, as a CV-22 Osprey special mission aviator. The senior Mapel is currently the 1st Special Operations Group chief enlisted manager standards and evaluations. Special missions aviators cover everything from pre-flight inspections of aircraft systems to the placement and delivery of all cargo on board. They have multiple integral roles, monitoring all functions for the aircraft while providing weapon defense-including the former duties of flight engineers, loadmasters and gunners. Airman Mapel, he went to college and found that it wasn’t for him but he told himself if he ever got tired of college he would join the Air Force. Once he enlisted, the son of a career special operations Airman knew exactly what he wanted to do. “Being with the family I saw the job, the community, everyone in it and how close everyone was in the squadron, that’s why I wanted to go for special operations,” said Airman Mapel. While at the Air Force Center of Excellence he placed

    BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT AWARD!

John Platko, Class of 1986, established X Press Printing Services in a one-room Mentor office in 1996. For the first two years, he brokered printing while using his graphics and business background to provide marketing and advertising design & layout to local businesses. He realized a growing need to manufacture the work he was designing and knowing that he could not do it alone, partnered with Don Advey in 1998. Once a printing vendor, Don became and remains a partner and friend to this day. X Press Printing Services, Inc. was officially incorporated and they moved from Mentor to Painesville where they purchased equipment from an existing business and started producing their own printed matter in-house.

A few years later a move to Willoughby was necessary when they made their second business acquisition, outgrowing their Painesville location. In 2007, and four more business acquisitions later, X Press Printing Services permanently settled in their own 15,000 square foot facility a couple miles away at 4405 Glenbrook Road, Willoughby.

X Press Printing Services was formed out of need for consistent service in our industry. Growth came from being fair, friendly, resourceful and fiscally responsible. Additional growth was fueled by business acquisitions which total nine to date and include companies that provided printing, mailing, promotional products, signage and silk screening services. “When opportunity knocks, open the door …then open your heart and ears” is the X Press mantra. The acquisitions were always a situation where someone was in financial trouble, wanted to retire or simply wanted to get out of their business. “We were able to help people by addressing their needs and in return, our business benefitted. “

    X PRESS PRINTING SERVICES, INC.

John states, “Our success has been a wonderful gift from God. It was never easy, but always thankfully appreciated. After chasing the dream, I realized that I had been living it all along.

Today, X Press Printing Services is giving back. Our company is dedicated to helping others and being an example to other businesses in the community. We are still considered a small business but I believe even a small business can make a big difference. With the

blessings bestowed upon us, we support many non-profit organizations throughout northern Ohio

including Hannah’s Home (a Christian home for young women in crisis pregnancy), Helping Hands Clown Ministry (which delivers hot meals to homeless persons in Cleveland), Help Me Color a Rainbow (which provides crayons and coloring books to children in the hospital), the

Young Men’s Christian Association, United Way of Lake County, NAMI and many other

organizations who help others. Whether it’s supporting our Perry Harvest Festival, Perry Township Concert Series, sponsoring a Perry youth sports team or donating backpacks to the Perry PSL program, it’s good to give back at home too. We want to share God’s gifts with our neighbors.

X Press Printing Services was built, first by Grace, then by providing great service with the cooperative work of our team of highly experienced personnel. Six of our eight employees have been with us for over ten years and the other two are working their way to that mark… and after twenty years, Don Advey is still my business partner and great friend. Together, we love our team, we love our customers

& we love our community…but most of all we love and thank our God, Jesus Christ for loving us first.”

“I trust the community he is involved in and will be working with; in special operations we build families and take care of each other,” Chief Mapel said. “His community will take care of him and he will take care of his community, so I have no worries or fears.” With his son following in his footsteps and close to graduating, Chief Mapel’s feelings for his son have heightened even more. “I am very proud of him…It’s easy to say it’s the proudest thing [he’s] done to date,” said Chief Mapel. “I’m seriously trying to consider if there is anything else [he’s] done that’s more worthy than serving [his] country as special operations in the United States Air Force and honestly in my opinion, I don’t think there is.”

NOTE: Chief Mapel’s Retirement Ceremony was held in January 2019 after 30 years of dedication. David is still at Kirtland AFB finishing up his training and once completed will be stationed at Cannon AFB, NM.
