I grew up in northern Ontario and I remember one year that we had four snow days in one month. Amazing! It was exciting to have the day off school and to play in the newly fallen snow. Little did I know then that play was so important. See the article Stay & Play: The Power of Play in this issue of the magazine to find out how play builds literacy, empathy, motor skills, and more. More than 50 years after it was published, The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, continues to captivate young readers and celebrate play. It also reminds adult readers of the pleasures of walking in fresh snow, making snow angels, and packing a really good snowball. Borrow it in print or as an e-book and welcome winter one more time.

Woolly Wonders is a new program at Idea Exchange, Clemens Mill that gives knitters and crocheters a space to create something special for someone in need. Knitters and crocheters are invited to join fellow crafters for a chance to practice their skills, meet members of the community, and share their passion. All items created during this program will be donated to people who may need a little extra warmth this winter season.

A selection of books will be available for inspiration, as well as some easy patterns for beginners to follow. If you are new to the world of knitting, a scarf is a perfect place to start. More experienced knitters may want to consider making hats, mittens, or socks. Attendees are asked to bring materials such as yarn, crochet hooks, and knitting needles.

Contributors will have the opportunity to display their creations on the Giving Tree at Idea Exchange, Clemens Mill. These items will then be donated to various charities in our community in the days leading up to Christmas and throughout the winter to share the warmth.

PLAY! We know it builds literacy, creativity, curiosity, empathy, and other life skills. In following Idea Exchange’s vision to “create an environment of curiosity and discovery through the exploration of the arts and new technologies,” our spaces need to reflect our dedication to play and discovery-based learning. We know that early learning is developed through play, but it is not only children that benefit from hands-on learning experiences; adults also learn through exploration. This is why you’ll find tables with puzzles, board games, adult colouring sheets, building toys, and technology when you visit an Idea Exchange location. More importantly, you’ll find people playing and learning together.

Idea Exchange believes in the power of play and interactive learning. We may not always be the experts; we are also the curious, the tinkerer,

the novice, and the explorer. We are also here to learn, to play, and to discover. Our goal is to support lifelong learning for our members and for ourselves.

As I write this article, five children and two adults are playing a rousing game of Headbanz together. This sort of intergenerational play in our space creates an active environment, alive and full of potential. A place that sparks creativity, innovation, and develops a life-long love of learning for all ages.

This winter, we invite you to our special Stay & Play programs in December and January (see page 22 for details). With new hands-on activity stations set up each day in the Children’s areas, there will always be something new to discover and explore. No registration required – drop-in and PLAY with us!

Storytelling is about connections. It transcends generations, stirs our emotions, and promotes togetherness. Through the stories we share, we reveal our passions, shoulder our sadness, celebrate overcoming hardship, and discover a pathway to joy. Most importantly, in more turbulent times, they offer a route to common ground and mutual acceptance.

Narrative 4 is a global organization that works across four continents in twelve countries, using a well-honed process called the story exchange to spread empathy and connect people with others. Idea Exchange is excited to be hosting one of the first Narrative 4 workshops in Canada, facilitated by Dr. Ingrid Brand and Dianna Palmerin. During the workshop, participants are paired together to share a story that defines them. Participants then walk in each other’s shoes by retelling their partner’s story. Sometimes playful, sometimes emotional, this is an afternoon of connection you won’t forget.

“We are living through exciting times in which opportunities to connect with others seems difficult to find,” said Dianna Palmerin. “I believe we need to be very intentional not to succumb to these discourses while offering an alternative way of being built around kindness and empathy." Dr. Ingrid Brand added, “Narrative 4 workshops provide tangible steps to build more authentic relationships and deepen diversity and inclusion.”

Let’s increase empathy, build connections, and shatter stereotypes in our community together. This February, Idea Exchange invites seniors and teens to register for our Narrative 4 workshop and broaden their horizons.

In September we concluded Common Waters, a

community project which featured 16 artists and

more than 22 events focused on the theme of

water. Activations within this project ranged from

workshops that examined mud and microbes in the

Grand River to poolside performances, walks, talks,

poetry readings, book-making, and the creation

of a community research and sharing station. It

concluded with a Harvesting Celebration guided

by Andrew Judge, Don Russell, Bill Woodworth,

and Christine Lefebvre at rare Charitable Research

Reserve. Three sacred fires were lit to honour

the ancestors of the land, the blue corn, and

the arrival of autumn. The photo on the cover of

this magazine is from the third sacred fire where

we gathered in the conceptual longhouse for a

feast underneath the rise of the full moon. As we

celebrated the abundance of the autumn harvest,

we also honoured the incredible bounty that this

project brought to us and to this community.

The full moon signifies changing cycles, turning seasons, and provides a poignant departure from this resonant project into our next programs.

Within the winter cycle, we are presenting a

remarkable exhibition that comprises 25 years of

artistic output by first-generation Cree Métis new

media artist, Jason Baerg. The exhibition will

continue an exploration of themes of Indigenous

resilience as well as spiritual and world views.

In the new year, we are launching an inaugural

program, Young Interpreters, which will focus

on providing youth with the opportunity to learn

about our exhibitions and to create something

in response. The first workshop will focus on

Baerg’s exhibition and the use of 2D and 3D art

making to express important personal ideas and

concerns. Also, in our efforts to expand access to

the themes of exhibitions, we will be launching

an interactive Interpretation Station that will

have activities and helpful tips for understanding

exhibitions, no matter the level of personal

knowledge of our visitors.

When we gathered at the third sacred fire at

the end of Common Waters, Bill Woodworth

emphasized how important community is to the

Indigenous way of life – how it has helped them

to survive and now to thrive again. Caring for

each other, working together, respecting nature,

sharing knowledge – these are the same qualities

that we will continue to hold and grow within the

core of our programming.

This exhibition is presented across two locations: Queen’s Square Gallery and Preston Gallery.

The journey through twenty-five years of drawing and painting have found innovative pathways through the conceptual and formal approaches of Cree Métis visual artist Jason Baerg. Grounded commitments to these mediums have been transformed over time into an expanding field of digital and material experimentations.

As first-generation new media artist, Jason Baerg forged unique ways to utilize emergent 2D, 3D, interactive, immersive and fabrication technologies. The dynamic Tawâskweyâw ᑕᐋᐧᐢᑫᐧᔮᐤ / A Path or Gap Among the Trees exhibition presented in two parts at Cambridge Art Galleries, charts key contributions Baerg has made in the first 25 years of his artistic practice, which includes: interactive immersive generative media projection pieces and laser cut painting installations; both of which are some of the first produced and presented anywhere in the world.

Jason Baerg, A Path or Gap Among The Trees, Queen’s Square Gallery Installation

Jason Baerg is an Indigenous curator, educator, and visual artist. Curatorial contributions include developing and implementing the national Métis arts program for the Vancouver Olympics. Baerg graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts from Rutgers University. Dedicated to community development, he founded and incorporated the Métis Artist Collective and has served as volunteer Chair for such organizations as the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective and the National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition.

You may have noticed a new feature in the non-fiction section at the Queen’s Square location. A selection of art and exhibition catalogues from Canadian galleries, including some from Cambridge Art Galleries, are now available to be checked out by members.
