TIPS IF YOU HAVE LOST YOUR PET

First, take a long deep breath and try not to panic. It may feel like the end of the world, but the good

news is that your pet most likely will be found. Microchips often play a vital part in reuniting pets with

their owners. The key is for you to make a plan and stay calm. Its a good idea to contact someone

you know for help during this time. Your friends and family can provide support and also help you

search a greater area for your pet.

Here is a link which provides useful details on what to do if you have lost your pet. Refer to the following link: Have you lost your pet

VETERINARIANS are warning dog owners to rip out a beautiful but poisonous backyard plant which has killed at least one Sydney dog and sickened a number of others. The purple flowering Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow plant, also known as brunfelsia bonodora, causes seizures when dogs eat their toxic berries and seed pods

If youve got a dog definitely get rid of the plant and in terms of having the dog

out and about just keep the dog on a leash. She said tell-tale signs of brunfelsia poisoning include vomiting, increased salivation, diarrhoea and muscle tremors that can last up to several days. The tropical American plant can grow 1m-2m and is popular in hedges and perfume gardens. Not just the dogs. Cats are at great risk from lilies - the flowers are popular as gifts, but when cats come across them, they can be deadly. The plants can cause lily intoxication - causing kidney (renal) failure in cats. So watch out when gifting or receiving them.

Below are some training videos on socialising your pet and

behavioural training produced by Dr Katrina Warren. Many

surrendered animals are there through no fault of their own but due

to the lack of training by their former owners. Animals learn best

when basic words such as Sit and Stay are used and training just

doesnt stop there. They need consistency and time. Remember its

the equivalent of people learning a foreign language to them and

your time and patience will be rewarded when the effort is put in.

Common mistakes owners make with microchip details are their currency, remember every time you change phone numbers and/or addresses you need to update these details as old details are the reason many animals end up in pounds or shelters. Owners can check microchip details at any vet clinic or shelter and contact information for the main microchip registries are listed 1. National Pet Register 1300 734 738 www.petregister.com.au 2. Heeler x Male 3 years Winston

Winston was surrendered to us because his owner could no longer

care for him. Hes a highly intelligent boy with an old soul so he has a

wise spirit. He has had some basic training & although he may be shy

with you at first, just give him some time & hell show you what a

devoted & loving companion he can be. He is housetrained & he

enjoys regular exercise & loads of positive interaction. If further

obedience training is what youd be interested in doing, then Winston

will do you very proud. He would suit an active adult family.

Staffy x (around English Staffy size) Female 2 years

    Terri

Terri was surrendered to us because her owners moved to

a rental with a no pets policy. She can be quite shy with

new people & in unfamiliar situations, although once she

those she loves, she is loyal, friendly, giving, super

affectionate & playful. She likes going for walks & she may

be fine with other dogs. She is housetrained & her medium

size makes her fairly easy to carry if need be. Terri would

suit a patient, very loving adult family or a family with older

    teens.

Ducky was surrendered to us because his owner

could no longer keep him. Hes an intelligent little

guy, filled with energy & curiosity. He loves to go for

walks & will look at the front door expectantly, in the

hope that youll grab a lead & take him out. He

learns new things very quickly & he tends to be at

his best when his environment is calm & his pack

leader is assertive but fair. He listens to correction &

generally aims to please, often looking at you for

approval. He seems fine with other, small, non-

intrusive dogs, although he tends to be intimidated

by larger dogs (especially males). He has some

little quirks which are totally manageable, given a

little training. He will sit & stay/wait when asked &

he will sleep inside through the night without a

peep. He loves to snuggle up on the couch with you

while you watch TV & if youre so inclined to give

him a massage, hes always up for it. Ducky would

suit an experienced, dog savvy, very loving adult

family. Ducky is a small dog & he resembles a

miniature Kelpie x (very handsome indeed).

Saffy is a bright bundle of enthusiastic energy.

Shes inquisitive about everything & she always

wants to know whats going on. She is highly

intelligent & a great lover of exercise. She would

absolutely straight back legs and blue tongues. It was noted that Chinese noblemen kept chows in the

utmost comfort, with servants to wait on their every need. They are also the closest breed to the

    original wolf!!

From what can be pieced together is would seem that the Chow was introduced into China by the

various barbaric tribes who lived at its northern borders. It is also known that Genghis Khan kept

chows and used them for food and clothing!!

To own a Chow, or rather, to be owned by one, can give endless pleasure and delight. These dogs

are completely different from the ordinary canine in appearance, build and character. They can live a

long, active life much longer than other breeds. If well fed and looked after, a Chow is still young

at 12 and can live on to 15 or 16 very happily.

The would be Chow purchaser, must be quite certain he wants this breed in his home. If you want a

dog that is to make his owner his god, then dont choose a Chow. They are proud and go their own

way in life, but when they do give their devotion to one individual, they give is whole-heartedly and

once only. If this bond is broken they never seem to give again.

The Chow is a wonderful watchdog, never barking unnecessarily. He is not, as a rule, friendly with

strangers and seems to resent being touched by those he doesnt know, although they will very

seldom resort to growling. He will just back away and if a house dog, leave the room when visitors

    are there.

Chows are not as humanized as other dogs and have many ways of the cat about them, but once a

Chow has been taken into a home, it is very seldom that his owner turns to another breed. Their

strange aloofness, and gentle loyal behaviour, win admirer after admirer.

The Chow is very easy to housetrain, right from puppyhood. Another factor to keep in mind is

grooming. only a 5 minute brushing each day and a good going over once a week will maintain his

    beautiful coat.

So, just remember, when choosing ANY DOG OR ANY PET, you must be prepared to care for it, love

it and nurture it . PETS ARE FOREVER!!!!!

    Did you know?

The history of the Chow Chow.

From an old Old Chinese tale: .

When the world was being created,

what dog was allowed to pick up all

the little pieces of blue sky which fell

on the earth when the stars were

    being set in their place?The

Chow, said Li Fu, and thats how the

chow got his blue tongue. In China

and the countries around it where

    these dogs originated, historians have

found references to them as far back

as the 11th century BC, the dogs

being described as heavily built, with

    harsh, bristly hair,

Happy Home Tails (adoptees from AAPS)

This is a new section of eNews created from feedback from AAPS supporters. I received fantastic

feedback from many adopters and lovely adoption stories. Enjoy this section as I hope it gives a

sense of success to a tough situation and provides motivation that one person cant change the world

for all animals but you can change the world for one animal at a time. Enjoy this new section.

    SYLVIE

This is Brocky; he came from AAPS in

    August 2012. He was previously

named Chocko but that didn't suit

him, we tried to keep it sounding

similar to not confuse him. He was a

6month old exuberant puppy with a

    beautiful temperament and not too

much baggage. He fitted in well to our

family and enjoyed life with Max our

    AAPS rescued golden retriever.

Brocky is a black lab German

shepherd cross, but the only lab bit is

his ears and full colour. His hobbies

are camping, water skiing (ok, just

going in the boat) caravanning ( yes,

he sleeps inside) sleeping on the

    lounge at home, chewing sticks,

destroying tennis balls, running in the

mud at the wetlands and hanging out

with Max. Thanks AAPS for giving us

our camouflage black dog that hides

on the black chair or couch and you

can only see his eyes. Lol.

    Cissy (dec) & Sylvie (cat)

Here is our story of love from AAPS. In 1997, my husband and I adopted Cissy from AAPS. She was the love of my life. When she died in August 2011, aged 16, I felt so much grief. Against my better judgement, just 3 days later we came to AAPS to look at the cats. We left with 1 yo Sylvie. She had been surrendered with her siblings. We were unsure how she would adapt to life as a single cat, but after a few weeks she made herself at home. Sylvie is funny, loving and perfect for our family. We are so lucky to have found her.

    BROWNIE & WHITEY

here or there. We had to fence the vegie patch off of course. Theres the odd thing that gets demolished in a day or two but they tend to focus on the lawn. In fact the three of them kept our small lawn down so well last year that we only mow twice per year! Over time theyve become much more relaxed and friendly, weve had to rabbit-proof part of the house too since they started coming in if the back door was left open. They potter around then rest under the kitchen table. They are just the most beautiful, funny and adorable things and we love all three. We very much appreciate the great care that Leigh took to find the right rabbits for Hazelnut on his bunny date as well as her support and advice when we were new to caring for rabbits.

    We adopted Brownie and

    Whitey to keep our

    Hazelnut Company in early

    2012 and theyve become

    much-loved family

    members. The three rabbits

    are very close and can

    often be found snuggled in

    one big pile during early

    afternoon. Ive been

    pleasantly surprised by how

    little damage theyve done

    to the garden. They spend

quite a lot of time out in the

    garden, especially when the

    weather is warm and were

    out there, but most plants

    just lose a mouthful

Hi. This is Max, he came to us from AAPS approx. 4 years ago aged 4 and has adapted well to our family. He is big brother to Brocky, seen photo bombing in the "staring at ants" photo whilst camping. And great uncle to young visiting retriever Byerly in main "lounging on the mat" photo. Max has an extremely docile temperament, loves attention and wins the hearts of all with his- sit on my bum and put two paws on your knee trick. He is a proud retriever and is never seen at the front door without some gift for the arriving family member or honoured guest, sometimes socks, shoes, teddy, dog pillow pet, or anything else not bolted down. Thanks AAPS for allowing us to have a happy life with Max as our companion.

Thank you AAPS for all that you do. Forever grateful, Lauren and Hayley.

I'm Georgie Priscilla Lake, I live with my family

inside my home just like they do so I stay warm

in Winter & cool in Summer, I'm 11 years

young & I was adopted from the AAPS,

    Keysborough 7 years ago. I'm a Maltese

Terrier. My Mummy also says I'm her sweet,

affectionate, loving, smoochy fur daughter; &

Daddy's of course. My Mummy & Daddy love

me very much & do anything to make sure I am

healthy & happy. I am so glad they adopted

me; I love them with all my heart. They always

look after me & make sure I stay healthy &

happy. My Mummy & Daddy bought me pink

everything & pink is still my favorite colour. I

love my soft warm bed but three's company...

right. Mummy & Daddy find my "dinner time

dance" very funny & laugh at

me as I clack my nails on the floor with excitement because I know what's coming... DINNER!! Mummy also

knows I love cheese & chicken & she just flicks me a bit when she is preparing those human meals for her; as a

special little treat because she knows how much I love them. Mummy & Daddy always put my harness on when

riding in the car so I am safe like they are. I couldn't have found a better forever home. Thank you AAPS for

providing animal adoption to kind, loving people like my Mummy & Daddy & many more of my sisters & brothers

that have found "forever" homes. Yours furrily, Georgie Priscilla Lake. Have a paw-fect day. PS. Thank you to

Mummy for writing my story so you can see that adoption is the best option

    My name is Lauren. My

    daughter and I adopted

    two beautiful kittens from

    AAPS in January this year.

    We previously had two

    cats (one of which was

    adopted as a kitten from

    AAPS. Unfortunately, we

    lost our two beautiful boys

    last year to diabetes and

    kidney disease at ages

    eleven and twelve.

    Although we could never

    replace our boys, our

We adopted little Kermit in October last year and the poor little fella had been neglected and badly mistreated by his previous owners. He was scared of anyone and everything covered in mange and emaciated and had severe separation anxiety. Luckily he was quickly moved to foster care where he began his recovery. We came across him on your website and quickly fell in love so adopted him immediately. Kermits first impression of us was unfortunately not mutual; it took a lot of love, a lot of treats and months of training to get his trust. We all found the first month really tough while he was adjusting to his new home but not too much longer and we had ourselves a new four-legged shadow. 8 months later he is a totally different dog (son). He goes everywhere with us and his

Confidence continues to grow every day. He loves the dog park, hates the postie and loves to visit his favourite doggy diamond bakery. He has even been starred in the latest Horseland catalogue. We couldnt have asked for a better fur baby and he will always be a huge part of our family. Thankyou AAPS we absolutely love him. We may even have to find him a brother or sister soon! ;) Thanks again!! Sarah, Lee & Kermie :)

Note: the photo of Kermit with the collar on was taken 3 weeks after he was handed into AAPS.

My dad and I went to AAPS on February 14th 2008 because it was some years since dad had a dog and he decided it was time (Not with his wife's permission though) Dad and I went in and saw lots of pooches all looking for their forever homes. None of them were connecting with him and as we were about to leave a nice staff member showed us a very big mastiff x called Gilbert. He was 4 years old and my dad fell in love with him instantly. Gilbert apparently used to be owned by a butcher who could no longer keep him, he was a drooler and this obviously put most people off, but my dads heart melted. My dad is 6 foot 3 and Gilbert was a very large Mastiff x so one could say size wise these two matched perfectly. Dad wanted him and knew he had to go speak to his wife. So we put Gilbert on hold and drove home discussing how sweet he was and how he looked like a good loyal dog. Dad spoke to his wife and she did not want any pets. This

    Gilbert

went on for a few days until my step mother finally gave in. Dad then went and got Gilbert the following week. These two were inseparable ever since that date. Gilbert knew dad was his owner and followed him everywhere. Gilbert used his slobber to his advantage, if you did not pat him; he would push his head against your body strategically in such a way his hanging drool always got you. Gilbert was very loyal to dad, and sadly last year Gilbert had to be put down after being diagnosed with spondylosis of the spine and a tumour in his neck. He also had a growth in his hip and he was in a lot of pain. Gilbert was approx. 10 years old and I know he had the best 5 years of his life with my dad. Dad and I to this day find it difficult to talk about him because we loved him so much and it was like losing a child. Making a decision to put him to sleep was hardest decision we ever had to make but because of rapid decline in his health, his age and his size, it was kindest thing to do for him. Gilbert went camping with us to Echuca, Grampians and other places and loved playing in the lakes. Gilbert also enjoyed camping because he got to sleep next to dad in the tent. Thank you AAPS for bring Gilbert into our lives (we kept his name, though nick names included Grinder and Fat boy) Gilbert was the apple of my dads eye and one of the best loyal sweetest harmless dogs I will have ever had to the privilege to know. Forever in our hearts Gilbert. RIP

    Kermit

    The Chronicles of Snags

We adopted Snagglepuss, a Russian Blue,

from the AAPS on 5 August 2000. He was not

in the main viewing area but hubby saw him

and wanted to meet him. I have an enduring

image of this handsome grey cat, with

stunning green eyes, wafting in front of and

behind my husband, rubbing him along the

way. He was The One. We also adopted a

    female ginger tabby. Snags was almost 2;

    Poppi was 4.

At home they were very unsure at

first but after a while they emerged, tentative

and unsure but wanting to explore. They

soon bonded and were playing an amazing

game paw fights around the toy box in the

lounge. It was so entertaining that we turned

the TV off preferring instead the antics of our

    new companions.

They soon bonded and over the years

we saw many games. They were just like

brother and sister. Snags loved to hunt and

enjoyed being the boss of a wide territory.

We had some scrub land nearby and he would

often be gone for 48 hours at a time.

According to hubby, he was the boss of a Cat

    Empire.

He was 9 when we moved from a house on a

block to a 2-storey house in a body corp.

estate. I think he missed his killing fields at

first but as cats do, he adapted. If he couldnt

hunt he was going to get as many pats and

make as many human companions as

possible. He claimed the unit across from us

and the one next door, occasionally inviting

himself in via their front door. Anything for

    attention!

He particularly liked the ducted heating and

took up his winter residence at the foot of our

bed, under a heat vent. On cold nights he

decided hed rather be in the bed and found a

spot underneath my left armpit. He would

drape his head over my arm and put his head

on my pillow. Sometimes he got so close that

his cold, wet nose touched mine. Of course it

was me who had to move. Not him!

There are so many more stories I could tell

about the Life and Times of Snagglepuss. Like

the time he was bitten by a tiger snake and

was on deaths door, or the time he came

home with a small hole in his ear. We never

did find out how it happened. The way he

meowed his head off when he came in, as if to

say, Im here, or the way his stunning green

eyes just bored through you until you did

what he wanted. He lived a rich, full life and

seemed to touch everyone who met him.

He passed away, suddenly, on Saturday 26

April 2014. In hindsight his kidneys were

failing and it seems the build-up of toxins was

too much for his heart. According to the

neighbours who found him, it looked like hed

simply laid down and breathed his last breath.

At least he didnt suffer. He was 15 and 7

    months.

Poppi is approaching 18 but is still in good

health. She misses Snags a bit but is also

enjoying the increased attention. When her

time comes, we look forward to adopting

another cat (maybe two) from the AAPS and

spending many future years of happiness with

    a new companion.

    Trevor

nail has a different story ". We love Trevor dearly and he has bought our family loads of joy, love and fun. We hope that Trev will be with us for many years to come. When it is his time to go we will lose a valued member of this family and will be sadly missed but for now we are enjoying the love and laughs he provides us daily. The Heffernan Family

We had the pleasure of meeting Trevor in January 2011.The note on the pen stated that he was 15+ years old. We wanted the beautiful boy to enjoy the rest of his days in a loving home environment so we applied to adopt him. The AAPS were a little hesitant to allow us to adopt him due to his age and the long list of medical issues he had been diagnosed with. Eventually on the 19th January 2011, we adopted him and took him home and named him Trevor. We had him examined by two Vets who confirmed that he had a strong heart but was quite old. We then took him to our dog groomer who had to shave him due to the neglect that he had faced in the past. Three and a half years on we are happy to inform everyone that Trevor is still with us and going strong. He has no front teeth (top or bottom) and his nails grow in all different directions. As the Vet told us last week after Trevor damaged a nail whilst on a walk each

This is my beautiful dog Zoe who I adopted from the AAPS in

December 2001 at 18months old, she had been dumped, and

as soon as I saw her I knew she was the dog for me. My

husband calls her my little magnet as she always is by my side.

We did obedience training with her and we always take her on

doggie holidays with us. She is now 14 years young and acts

like a puppy when she plays. We go for walkies every day and

she has more friends than I have. I love her to bits, she is spoilt

as is our cat, also a rescue and I can't thank you enough for all

you do for the animals in your care.

    With great admiration

    Gail Finch

    Zoe

years old have earned her the name of Loopy Lu-Lu. I think she missed out on being allowed to be a puppy and is making

    up for it now

Lu-Lu Sadly, we lost our rescued Rottweiler, Rambo

earlier this year. Margaret, my wife was distraught

and our daughter Amanda suggested that we get

another dog as soon as possible. Amanda and I

went to AAPS and found a very frightened pup,

who soon was happy to play with our other dog,

Ralph even sharing a bowl of water with him. We

took her home and she was soon playing madly

with Ralph (Ralph was another rescued dog)

although she was wary about humans, especially

men. As we have adopted several dogs in the past.

Her antics even though she has now turned two

    JESSIE

My kitten was 3 and a half months old when I adopted him from AAPS. He was in the shelter with 2 other kittens, all tabby cats with no names. I couldnt decide which kitten I wanted to adopt the most; I wanted all 3 of them. But the black tabby kitten caught my eye, as I had never seen a black tabby before. I took him home and after meowing in the car, he started exploring the house. It only took an hour in his new home before he was running from one end of the house to the other, exploring the house and enjoying being able to run around in a large space. I decided to name him Norbert (the baby dragon from first Harry Potter book/movie). It has now been a year since I adopted Norbert and he has definitely settled in well. Everyone in the house loves him and he is often the topic of conversation with all the unusual things he does. Norberts favourite things to do are running around outside in the rain, climbing trees, exploring the roof, sitting on peoples shoulders and stealing food from peoples dinner

plates when they are not looking. He loves the rain and often comes inside soaking wet after being out. He has a great sense of smell, the second someone takes meat out of the fridge to prepare, hes there watching and waiting. He climbs the bench and acts cute, making high-pitched meows in the hope that he will get some meat. You should hear the sound of his purrs when there is food around. He is like a motorbike with his purring, its really loud. He loves being around dinner time, he sits at the kitchen table with us and purrs, waiting for someone to finish with their food so he can eat the leftovers. He loves being cradled in peoples arms like a baby and just sits in your arms purring. He greets people by touching his nose to their nose. Norbert is now 1 1/2 years old but still behaves like a kitten. He loves to play and chase sticks around the backyard, climb on the clothes airer, knocking the clothes off. But of course, he acts innocent, like hes done nothing wrong! Norbert is very happy in his new home. He is a fantastic cat and loves attention, I am very happy that I adopted him.

This is Jessie we rescued her a few years ago from the Keysborough Animal shelter. When I went to see her she was cowering in the corner scared. I bent down and gave her a cuddle and comforted her. She has become our familys fur baby. She has been to doggy school and learnt manners, she has gotten over her fear of car rides so much so we cant open the back of the car to even get groceries out without her leaping straight in with her tail wagging so much she knocks the shopping out she still doesnt like cats but thats ok they dont like her either she likes to go for short walks as if you take her for long walks she lays down and rolls on her back as if to show us she has sore tooties lol. She is a fussy eater and doesnt like most store brought snacks. She loves being inside and following me around. She hates me making the bed because to her its always just right to sleep on... she has her own blankies on the floor which she sprawls across. She is the best thing to come into our lives in a long time

and she helped my son with autism get over his fear of dogs. I am so glad I made the call to see if she was still available Cheers and keep up the great work ... you guys rock Sue and Jessie
