Ready to become an expert on Canadian winter?
Canadians love winter. Sure, its cold and snowy, but our winter offers limitless opportunities for outdoor
fun you just cant get in summer.
From exotic pursuits like dogsledding, kite-skiing and nocturnal snowtubing to more traditional winter
activities like downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and frozen pond skating, winter is a
fantastic time to visit Canada, especially for lovers of the great outdoors. Canada also boasts some of
the world's finest winter festivals, such asWinterlude in Ottawa, ON, Caribou
Carnival inYellowknife,NWT, Festival du VoyageurinManitoba, and theworlds biggest winter
carnivalin Qubec City, QCall excellent reasons to go outside and play. Afterward, your clients can
cosy up to a roaring, wood-burning fire with a glass of maple whiskey, mulled wine or hot cocoa in an
all-season or winter resort.
For a rejuvenating winter break, your clients can indulge in the pampering pleasures at one of our
world-class spas. These include: the hot/cold Nordic and thermal waterfalls at eco-friendly La SourceBains Nordiques, Quebec's first geothermal-heated spa in Rawdon; the soothing, mineral-rich waters
ofBC'sRadium Hot Springs; and the outdoor fieldstone grotto for hot hydrotherapy at Ste. Anne's
Spain Grafton, ON. Many of Canada's best spas offer winter getaway packages.
Winter is also an excellent time to visit Canadian cities like Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB,Montral,
QC andToronto, ON for fine dining, culture and shopping before or after heading out on a winter
wonderland adventure.
Canadian Winter EssentialsWhat's the weather like in Canada in winter?
Most of the country is cold and crisp from November through March, with the exception of the BC coast,
where winters are moderate. Average January temperatures in places like Winnipeg, MB, Whitehorse, YT
and Saskatoon, SK, can drop to -22 C (8 F); Montral and Qubec City, QC, hover around -15 C (5
F); while mild Pacific coastal cities like Victoria and Vancouver, BC, are a balmy 10 C (50 F). Nearly
everywhere has plenty to offer both outdoor adventurers and urban explorers.
Sales tip: How to dress for Canadian winters
Packing for a winter trip to Canada doesnt mean buying a fur coat or a whole new wardrobe. The trick
to staying warm and dry just about anywhere in the country during winter is in layering. Have your
clients pack multiple, thin inner layers to hold in body heat. Fleece and wool are the warmest. Theyshould also bring a warm hat, scarf, insulated gloves and mittens; we can lose up to half of our body

Toronto, Ottawa and Montral. Some resorts even loan gear to their guests, making it that much easier
to pack light.
British Columbia
Mountains reign supreme in British Columbia. In winter, they're loaded with snow. There are terrific
skiing and snowboarding mountains throughout the province as well as a myriad of
backcountry skiing opportunities in national and provincial parks. Probably the most famous is Whistler
Blackcomb, one of the top-rated ski resorts in North America. And the world's best heli-skiing is found in
the Bugaboos in BC'sKootenay Rockies.
Snowmobiling hot spotsinclude Mackenzie in Northern BC and Sicamous in the Thompson Okanagan.
Top-notch cross-country ski terrain is found throughout the province.Dogsledding andsnowshoeing are
two growing winter sports.
For a milder taste of Canadian winter, head to Vancouver or Victoria (on Vancouver Island), where the
flowers are often blooming by mid-February, thecherry blossoms by March and the golf courses are in
swing year-round.
Alberta
Skiing and riding in Alberta's Rockies are second to none in world-class resorts likeLake
Louise, Sunshine Village, Marmot Basin,Norquay and Nakiska. Out here mountain resorts open early
usually by Novemberand provide thrills on the hills well into May.
But theres so much more to do in the winter. Because good snow conditions prevail throughout the
season, youll have plenty of time in plenty of places for cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Try your hand at ice fishing, dogsledding or ice sailing. Treat yourself to
a long soak in a natural hotsprings. Take the family on an ice walk through a frozen canyon. Spend anafternoon tobogganing or skating; at night, take a moonlit sleigh ride.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba
Outdoor sports enthusiasts will love winter on the Prairies under clear skies on a blanket of sparkling
white drifts. Cross-country skiers can head to Prince Albert National Park andCypress Hills Interprovincial
Park inSaskatchewan, andSpruce Woods andTurtle Mountain provincial parks in Manitoba for well-
groomed trail networks where you can kick and glide or skate your way through forests, sheltered from
the wind. Overnight in rustic backcountry cabins or luxuriate in lodges and nearby bed and breakfasts.
The Prairies are also a snowmobiler's paradise (SK andMB); explore thousands of miles of groomed and
signed trails, and travel through a variety of landscapes that you could never see from the car. Other
winter activities on the Prairies include snowshoeing on designated trails in most provincial parks and
trail horseback riding at places like Reesor Ranch in Saskatchewan's Cypress Hills.
For a truly memorable winter experience, take in the Canadian Challengesled dog race, which runs from
Prince Albert to La Ronge, SK, in February or the Hudson Bay Quest, which runs from Churchill, MB to
Nunalla in March.
Also in February, join the festivities during Manitoba's Festival du Voyageur, a 10-day province wide
celebration of sights, sounds, snow and spirit. Or head toChurchill, MB, in November for polar bear
encounters. If you're traveling in March, take in theFire & Ice Adventure, where you can join in Inuit
traditions and even build your own igloo or the Northern Nights and Winter Lights package, a trip that

Ontario
The countrys most populated province wears winter well. The blanket of white provides a perfect palette
for everything from cross-country skiing to dogsledding to a simple stroll in the city. The aprs-activity
events will depend on your location: drink a maple martini inToronto, light a fire in your backcountry
cabin, or shop for handknit sweaters in Canadas capital city, Ottawa. No matter what, youll find avibrancy thatll warm your heart.
For those who love snow, Ontarios resorts and lodges are delightful in winter. Hit the lifts with skis or a
board, then zoom downhill or cross-country, showing off your signature moves at Blue
Mountain,Calabogie Peaks, Stokely Creekor Talisman. Some trails are even lit after dusk, so you can
keep skiing when the sun goes down. There are even hills groomed for tubingtheyre extreme, so hold
on tight.
Rather sip than slide? TheNiagara Icewine Festival takes place during the second half of January, Some
winery tours even feature wine bars made out of ice. You can also sample wine and food pairings and
take in a market event in St. Catharinesfeaturing live entertainment and visual arts.
Quebec
Say oui! (or if you prefer, wheeeeeee!) to winter in Quebec. La belle province embraces winter with a
wide range activities. You can ski and snowboard at popular resorts like Mont Tremblant,Mont-Sainte-
Anne near Qubec Cityand magnificent Le Massif. Ski in the evening in the Saint-Sauveur valley where
you will find the worlds largest night skiing facilities. Hop on a snowmobile and skim over frozen lakes
into the heart of the boreal forest along a 20,000-mi (33,000-km) network of trails. Snowshoe or cross-
country ski through pristine forests in Gatineau Parks over 125 mi (200 km) of groomed trails and La
Mauricie National Parks over 50-mi (80-km) of trails. Sleep onsite, in cabins accessible only on skis.
To really commune with nature, learn to be a musher and drive a dogsled. Outings of several hours or
guided excursions of one to seven days are available in most regions. Spend nights in a tipi, rustic chalet
or something more upscale. And be sure to book a few moments of well-earned pampering at one of
Quebecs many spas, likeScandinave Spa Mont-Tremblant, where you can indulge in massages, Nordic
baths and personalized treatments in idyllic surroundings. If youre a true cold-weather buff, spend a
night at theIce Hotelnear Qubec City its dazzling architecture rises anew each year.
Youll also quickly warm up to winter in Quebecs cities. Take in a hockey game or stay toasty warm as
you shop inMontrals Underground City. Or head to Qubec Citys famous Winter Carnival in
February. The largest of its kind in the world, Carnival features a night parade, fireworks, canoe racing
on the icy St. Lawrence River and snow sculpture competitions.
New BrunswickWhether it's a luxury resort or rustic lodge, New Brunswick is a great place for across-countryskiing orsnowmobiling adventure. Northwestern New Brunswick generally receives between 10 to 13 ft(3 to 4 meters) of snow annually, which helps explain why theNorthern Snowmobile Odyssey's over 625mi (1,000 km) of trails are a sledder's dream.
New Brunswick also has great cross-country trails and downhill slopes to conquer, including the eight
alpine ski runs and 14 mi (22 km) of groomed trails around scenic Prichard Lake in Sugarloaf Provincial
Park. Hockey fan? Experience the game the way it was meant to be played each February at Plaster
Rock's World Pond Hockey Championship.
After a long day of winter fun, soak up the pleasures of pampering at delightful spas like
Bathursts L'Auberge de la Valle, which draws on the Acadian and Mikmaq First Nations secrets ofhealing with natural ingredients from the sea and forests. After a refreshing rest, youll be perfectly
prepped for a delicious evening meal prepared onsite.

Nova Scotia
Into winter waves? This province has got 'em. Take a surfing lesson, then head for hills like Martock,
Wentworth, Ben Eoinor Cape Smokey and snap on skis. Throw in a day ofdogsledding, snowshoeing,
eagle-watching or sleigh riding and youve done winter up right. Get romantic with weekend getaways to
seaside inns and B&Bs. Mid-winter food and wine festivals like February's province-wide IcewineFestival are the perfect complement to a romantic getaway. Or head indoors in Halifax, where the best
shopping in the Maritimes offers up plenty of boutiques and eclectic shops.
Prince Edward Island
Come winter, PEI's red soil gives way to a carpet of white. The busy summer crowds have gone home,
but the real fun is just beginning. Visit a smelt shack, one of the tiny buildings dotting the bays and
inlets, to be initiated into the ancient art of smelt spearing by local fishermenthey'll fascinate you with
their tall tales. Love oysters? You can fish for them in winter, tooright through the ice on Salutation
Cove. How about a snowshoe trekin the woods near Malpeque Bay with a winter survival guide? Or a
horse-drawn sleigh ride through the hills of central PEI? If you're across-country skier, PEI has one ofthe finest Nordic centres in the Maritimes. You can even try your hand at curling on your own private
sheet of ice.
Northwest Territories
Winters a blastup here, one of the most pristine areas in the world, where pure snow and immense
wilderness reach as far as the eye can see. The other worldly hues of nature's greatest spectacle,
the Northern Lights, are at their most brilliant and frequent here, regularly firing up the night sky with a
surreal explosion of color. There are also plenty of daytime activities:
try dogsleddingand snowmobilingacross awesome landscapes, or a snow slide or toboggan run. In the
snow-draped boreal forest, snowshoe along a gentle trail and listen to the silence. Watch for bands of
caribou or fat ptarmigan in the willows. Later on, roast marshmallows and sip cocoa around a roaring
fire while you wait for the aurora borealis to unfold.
Yukon
This is a landof incredible wilderness escapes. You'll be fascinated by the rugged and pristine landscape,
First Nations culture and northern pioneer character. Whether it's at luxury resort, or a rustic lodge, the
Yukon is a great place for a winter adventure.Snowmobiling, ice fishing, backcountry and Nordic
skiing anddogsledding experiences are all waiting for you. You'll also want to photograph the
mesmerizing black granite peaks, idyllic alpine lakes and subarctic tundra landscapes of Tombstone
Territorial Park, or watch the swans and fish for Arctic grayling in McClintock Bayin April and May.
Nunavut
Canada's newest territory is a great place for memorableskiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing
or dogsledding adventures. Springwhen the days are growing longer, the temperatures warming and
the ice beginning to flowis perhaps the ideal time to go for a winter vacation.
No other activity defines the Arctic as well as traveling by dog team, over frozen lakes and streams,
through narrow canyons, past enormous glaciers and down frozen river systems through places few
people have ventured. Or mushing to the floe edge(where the frozen ocean meets the open ocean) to
savour magnificent mountain scenery, glaciers, ancient Thule sites and the chance to see a variety of
Arctic wildlife.

While in Nunavut, view traveling exhibits of Inuit art and artefacts, and shop for Inuit art. Passionate
about wildlife? You'll never forget seeing narwhals up closeatoothed whale that lives year-round in the
Arctic and is distinguished by its unicorn horn, once worth more than its weight in gold. You can also
be adventurous with your palate: dine on Arctic char, turbot, caribou, bannock bread and muktuk (whale
skin).
Sales tip: Wine into winter
Icewine is a rare gift from a magical Canadian winter.
Picked at the coldest moment of a winter's night, each
frozen grape creates just one smooth rich, luxurious drop of
wine. Canada is the world's leader in exporting icewine,
which requires 10 times more grapes than needed for dry
wine. Canadians love icewine so much that we dedicate
whole festivals to it. If your clients appreciate fine wine,
complete with equally fine pairings, suggest they attend one
or more of Canada's Icewine festivals, which in January
include the Niagara Icewine Festivalin southern Ontario,
the Sun Peaks Resort Winter Wine Festival near
Kamloops,BC, and in February include the Nova ScotiaWinter Icewine Festival. Better yet, create a winter
oenophile's odyssey, with stops at all three festivals.
Major Airports
While there are a number of regional airports throughout Canada, the major ones your clients

Calgary, AB (YYC)
Winnipeg, MB (YWG)Toronto, ON (YYZ)

staff dressed in traditional costumes, while a history of the maple grove and guided tours demonstrate
how the sap is tapped, collected into a horse-drawn barrel and gradually transformed into maple syrup.
Enjoy a traditional "sugar shack" meal complemented by warm maple taffy poured over fresh snow whileenjoying storytelling and music by local artists.

Try your hand at ice fishing in Saskatchewan
By late December, ice on most Saskatchewan lakes is usually thick enough to support vehicles and
fishing equipment. Walleye are plentiful, while northern pike, perch, whitefish, trout and burbot are also
common. Thawing is rare before mid-March. The three-month season gives winter anglers ample time
and opportunity to get out on the ice.Ice fishing requires relatively little equipment. A good ice auger is
a must, along with ice-fishing line, tackle, bait and warm clothing. Portable fishing shacks or tents
provide shelter on the coldest days, but many ice fishers prefer to be out in the sunshine under an
endless blue sky.
