The Youth Services System Inc. Winter Freeze Shelter served 197 different individuals this season, a 23 percent increase over last year.

Inviting our homeless neighbors to sleep in our admin-istrative building during the winter was a matter of life and death when we started this ministry nine years ago, and the need has only grown. It took faith and a lot of hard work to make it happen, and it simply wouldn’t have been possible — and could not continue — without the support of our Ohio Valley neighbors.

Since we opened in 2009, 1,300 people have spent a cold winter’s night at 87 15th St. A need for shelter is the only prerequisite to be one of our guests. You provided your neighbors in dire circumstances with a warm bed, a hot meal, a kind word, a useful resource, a helping hand.

On behalf of them and all of us at Youth Services System, I thank you.

Blessed be the first responders, po-lice, fire, EMTs. Their professionalism and their caring were so welcome.

Blessed be the foundations, organi-zations, faith-based communities and scores of individual donors. Without their faithful generosity, the needs of the poor and homeless would have gone unmet.

Blessed be the soup makers, the meal makers, the dessert makers. Their loving efforts filled the bellies and warmed the hearts and souls of so many.

Blessed be the YSS team and volunteers. They kept vigil, formed friendships, offered hope.

Blessed be Project HOPE. Its doctors, nurses and medical team salved wounds, eased pain, saved lives.

Blessed be the launderers and bed makers, especially Wheeling Linen who provided dignifying hospitality.

Blessed be the children who gave and shared joyfully in this ministry. They are living the learned example of compassionate parents, teachers and pastors.

Blessed be you, the generous and compassionate people of the Ohio Valley, for your seemingly endless donations of vital items.
