One of the holidays I remember most was the one in which my father became a single parent to two teenage girls. We had just moved into a small apartment two days prior to Christmas and he had no financial means for gifts. He was able to supply a holiday meal and although we didn’t have family close by he invited others to share it with us. This was a tradition he carried on well into our early adulthood. He’d often invite people who didn’t have family, were in need of good company and a meal during the holiday season. I can say that this wasn’t always comfortable for my sister and I, as two teenage girls, but it was a tradition we grew to love and appreciate. During the holidays, you – like my father – inspire my and countless others giving spirit. In fact, in this issue we’re featuring a woman who was so inspired by the meals you helped us provide to her that she wanted to give back too. Thank you for not only helping us provide holiday meals but for providing hope and inspiration to the people we feed. Have a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year!

thanks to your support we’re rescuing and distributing a record amount of food to those in need in 2015.

We are...The sole distributor of nationally and regionally donated food to nearly 180 charitable feeding programs including our region’s soup kitchens, food shelves and shelters and approximately 44,000 people in need. As a non-profit food bank our primary role is to provide food to the front-line charitable agencies that offer meals to the hungry. However, we do provide food directly to 3,300 people per month as part of our own direct service programming.

Our Mission...Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s mission is to feed Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin’s hungry by rescuing and distributing food and engaging our region in the fight

against hunger.

“This year I’ll be 60 the day before Thanksgiving,” wrote a woman to our food bank upon donating a dollar during last year’s holiday season. “Even though I can’t make my money last until the end of the month I can pay for 5 meals. Five of us are gonna eat turkey!”

She was a participant of our food shelf and someone who had just received a turkey during our early November distribution. From the small bits of information we received in her letter we learned that she wouldn’t be sharing her birthday, Thanksgiving or other holiday meals with her family but that she was excited to share what little she had to ensure others would.

This fall at our food shelf and Mobile Pantry Programs, we were able to provide nearly 800 regional households with food for their holiday meals. Turkeys, potatoes and fresh vegetables are just a few of the items you helped us supply.

Your gifts not only ensure holiday meals for our program participants but they provide such hope and an overwhelming sense of gratitude that they are inspired to give too. Throughout the year we hear of children you help us feed as part of our BackPack Program wanting to share their food with other kids on the bus. We have families who receive food from

our food shelf and then ask how they can volunteer. And seniors, like this wonderful woman, who offer financial support in hopes of impacting others.

Your support ensures our feeding of over 44,000 people each year throughout NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin. Although the holidays are an especially important time, your gifts have impact all year long providing as many as 4.3 million meals to our grateful Northland residents in need.

Whether it’s $1, $5, $25 or $100, all donations matter and all donations have impact.

“Thank you from all of us,” she said. “I would probably end up going hungry if it weren’t for food shelves and soup kitchens. Now I’ll have leftovers and soup for the next several meals.”
