RUBBER THAT STAYS SOFT BELOW 7°C

Tyres designed for winter weather are made from special rubber compounds that stay soft and pliable to generate good traction. At 7°C, summer tyres and all-season tyres begin to lose flexibility. This reduces the contact surface and decreases the grip the tyre can offer. Even when there isn’t any snow on the roads, tyres designed for winter weather offer significantly better grip when the temperature dips below 7°C.

Winter tyres also have special tread patterns better suited for driving in the conditions found on winter roads. Special grooves allow snow, slush and water to evacuate from under the tyre, drastically improving grip. Small sipes allow the rubber to flex, improving grip on wet ice.

WHAT ABOUT ALL-SEASON TYRES?

All-season tyres are always a compromise, where neither the rubber compound nor the tread pattern can be optimised for ideal traction. It’s simple logic – tyres optimised for summer will not work that well in winter, and vice versa, which means that tyres designed for “all seasons” are not optimal for any season. And why would anyone want to compromise on safety? Only by following the recommendation of having two sets of wheels will it be possible to have the safest and best driving experience whatever the season.

SAFETY AND TESTINGEach individual wheel and rim is designed to have excellent ventilation and good heat conducting properties. This ensures that important on-board safety functions will not be compromised and that the braking system does not overheat.

During the development process, all Volvo rims are subjected to the same rigorous testing as the cars them selves. Testing is carried out at Volvo’s state-of-the-art test centre and is designed to meet global standards regarding safety, performance and durability – not just those of individual countries. Further testing includes extreme weather simulations to monitor corrosion and ensure maximum durability, as well as testing to improve handling and eliminate noise and vibrations.

Volvo Genuine wheels and rims are mounted and centred with high precision, which results in superior wheel balance. Wheel rims from competitors are often designed to suit several car brands and, therefore, cannot offer this level of precision or performance.

The mixture of specially selected metals used in Volvo Genuine rims ensures that the rim will not be easily damaged or crack if it comes in contact with the kerb. Each rim is pre-treated and painted using a 3-coat painting process, which provides increased corrosion protection and keeps them looking attractive far longer than non-Volvo products are capable of.

THE TOUGHEST OF TESTS IN THE HARSHEST CONDITIONS

Volvo Cars has performed comprehensive tests of winter tyres in Lapland every year since the 70’s. In the district of Jokkmokk, located at the Arctic Circle, winter is very cold and snowy – and long. It is the ideal place to test winter tyres during really harsh and demanding weather conditions.

TESTING WINTER TYRES ON NEW VOLVO CARS An ordinary test round starts out on a typical dark Arctic morning, with no daylight until a couple of hours before noon. The test patrol of experienced test drivers and technical staff use several different models of brand new Volvo cars. The test drives are conducted on a number of carefully prepared test tracks where the tests can be repeated in the same way again and again, to ensure that the different tyres are tested under exactly the same conditions.

After the Lapland tests, the tyres are tested also on snow-free ground, at the Hällered Proving Ground – Volvo Cars’ test track and proving ground in the south west of Sweden. The tests are performed on asphalt tracks and the main focus is stability tests, at different speeds and with/without load. Other properties that are tested are steering response, comfort, grip on wet surfaces and directional stability.

Based on all these tests, Volvo selects the best winter tyres for Volvo cars and combines them with Volvo Genuine aluminium rims to ensure that your customers always can get the best and safest winter tyres for their specific cars. During the test drives on the 12-kilometre test track,

the drivers test and rate various properties of the tyres – how track-sensitive they are, how they handle on snow and ice, in curves, on slippery surfaces and what they deliver in terms of comfort and low rolling noise.

There is also a handling test, which takes place on a specially prepared track on a lake’s ice. This test has several different moments of handling built in – driving through corners, breaking and quick side-manoeuvring. The track is narrow, about a kilometre long and made up of several sharp bends. Tyres are being changed many times on all the test vehicles, giving the drivers a clear experience of the difference between each tyre’s special qualities and characteristics.

“When it comes to testing tyres, the human experience is central. We can measure lateral accelerations, grip levels, brake distances, all those sorts of things – and they are also important. But that final assessment; how the car handles, how it feels to drive, if it behaves in a predictable manner – for that, an experienced test driver is totally outstanding.”


To illustrate the difference between winter tyres, all-season tyres and summer tyres, we conducted a little experiment in the frozen climes of Jokkmokk in Northern Sweden.

What we wanted to find out was this: if we take three identical Volvo cars, equip them respectively with winter, all-season and summer tyres and let them brake at a speed of 80 km/h – what would the differences in stopping distance actually turn out to be?

When preparing for documentation of the results in both photos and on film, the camera team came up with the idea of making the test site look like a gigantic curling rink, to spice it up a bit visually. The car nearest “the house” – the circular target marked on the ice – would be the winner.

THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVESAs we’ve described elsewhere in this brochure, summer tyres and all-season tyres begin to lose flexibility when temperatures drop below 7°C, which reduces their

ability to grip the road surface effectively. Winter tyres, on the other hand, are made from special rubber compounds that stay soft and pliable to help generate traction. Winter tyres also have special tread patterns designed for driving in winter conditions.

As you can see here, this makes a significant difference. The stopping distance of the Volvo equipped with all-season tyres was 33% longer than for the one with winter tyres. And the stopping distance for the car with summer tyres was as much as 127% longer!

PIRELLI is one of the leading manufacturers of high-end and performance tyres. Nokian tyres’ product development is consistently aiming for sustainable solutions for safety and the environment.

LOOK FOR THE MARKING OF A TRUE WINTER TYRE

Thanks to the EU legal marking related to performance it is easy to see if a tyre is a true winter tyre or not. The “Alpine” symbol can only be used if the tyre passes a minimum required performance on snow.

WHY ARE TYRES SO IMPORTANT?Simply put, the tyres are the contact points between the car and the road. This means that all the car’s driving qualities, the customer’s driving habits and the road

surface all interact in the four contact areas, each with the size of the palm of a hand. And since the tyres are the ultimate link between the car and the road, the car’s safety systems can be compromised if the tyres don’t do their job.

GENERAL TYRE INFORMATION

WHICH TYPES OF TYRE ARE THERE? Tyres vary because different vehicles have different requirements. The tyres on the market are normally divided into four categories. • Premium/Performance tyres. With good average

handling qualities. • Sport/High Performance tyres. With qualities for

more forced driving. • SUV tyres. Tyres that will meet the challenges on

unpaved ground. • Tyres with low rolling resistance. Reducing friction

to save fuel consumption.

QUALITIES DIFFER FROM TYRE TO TYRE The main differences between tyres can be observed by looking at their performance during driving. To make a tyre that is really good in one respect normally means compromising in another. For instance, a softer tyre often has better grip, but it will wear out faster. The properties that are most desirable in tyres are: • High-speed stability. • Steering response. • Grip on wet and dry road or (for winter tyres)

on snow and ice. • Short stopping distance. • Service life and economy. • Comfort in terms of feel and low noise level. • Environmental properties. • Appearance.

IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE RIGHT TYRE PRESSURE Tyres with the correct air pressure increase driving safety, save fuel and extend the service life of the tyres. Tyre pressure decreases over time, this is a natural phenomenon. Tyre pressure also varies depending on ambient temperature. Inadequate tyre pressure increases fuel consumption, shortens tyre lifespan and impairs the car’s driving characteristics.

Driving on tyres with tyre pressure that is too low could result in the tyres overheating and being damaged. Tyre pressure affects travelling comfort, road noise and driving characteristics.

The tyre pressure must sometimes be adjusted in order to maintain the recommended tyre pressure. Use the tyre pressure recommended for cold tyres in order to achieve optimal tyre performance and optimal wear. For a light load (max. 3 people) and a speed of up to 160 km/h (100 mph), the ECO pressures can be chosen for optimum fuel economy. However, the lower comfort pressures are recommended instead if optimum noise and travelling comfort are desired. To avoid incorrect tyre pressure, the pressure should be checked on cold tyres. “Cold tyres” means the tyres are the same temperature as the ambient temperature (approx. 3 hours after the car has been driven). After having driven approximately 1.6 km (1 mile), the tyres are considered as warm and the pressure has increased. If you have to drive further than this to inflate the tyres, first check and record the tyre pressure and inflate to a suitable tyre pressure when you arrive at the pump. When the outside temperature changes, the tyre pressure also changes. A decrease in temperature of 10 degrees causes the tyre pressure to decrease 0.1 bar (10 kPa).

The tyre pressure label on the driver’s side door pillar (between frame and rear door) shows which pressures the tyres should have at different loads and speed conditions.

SEASONAL STORAGE Tyres not in use but mounted on rims should be stored in a dark, dry and cool place. Keep them stacked, not standing, so they keep their roundness. Many Volvo dealers offer Wheel Hotel services. They handle tyre change, check condition and tyre pressure and will clean the tyres for you.

CLEANING YOUR RIMS Clean your wheels and tyres using a separate soapy sponge. If the grit is resistant, you may need to use a metal or chrome cleaning spray for your rims. A pressure washer is excellent for reaching all the nooks and corners, but you can also use a small brush or a toothbrush to work on tough spots and hard-to-reach areas.

SNOW CHAINS To maintain traction in the snowiest and iciest conditions, you might want to consider snow chains. Use Volvo Genuine snow chains designed for the correct car model, tyre and rim dimensions, to prevent damage, for example, to the wheel housing.

Volvo’s snow chain is specially developed for several tyre dimensions. This type of chain has the advantage of not being fitted on the inside of the tyre, not taking up the space required by larger wheels.

LOCKABLE WHEEL BOLTS A simple way of making sure that you hold on to your aluminium wheels is to get lockable wheel bolts. Your Volvo dealer offers lockable wheel bolts specially developed for Volvo Cars, which offers improved safety.

TYRE SERVICE LIFE Driving style and speed affects the product life of tyres by roughly 30 %. Seasonal differences account for 30 %, car type 20 % and the remaining 20 % depends on the type of road surface and the inherent durability of the tyre. In some cases, an aggressive driving style can account for 100 % of the wear on the tyre. Please note that the wear on winter tyres increase if they are used when it gets warm.
