What’s Been Happening at the Burbank Park District 3

If you have not heard by now, then you must have been out of the United States! The Burbank Park District will be breaking ground this September on a state-of-the-art, 37,000 s.f. Fitness/Community Center. This facility will have a full gymnasium, elevated walking track, 5,000 s.f. Fitness Center, men’s & women’s locker rooms, both equipped with steam room, KidsZone, Dedicated spin room, personal training studio, lounge/lobby area, 2 multipurpose studios, massage room and much more. It will be the crown jewel of Burbank. How is Burbank Park District doing this! With dignitaries such as Township Supervisor Louis Viverito, Mayor Harry Klein, and Committeeman Michael Looney 100% on board, it helps! It also helps that the Park District is very financially sound, so we were able to expand our original budget with the approval of (5) pro-active Board of Commissioners (Carol Opitz, Ed Krupa, Monika Leffers, Ted Arnold, Mary Faley). When can I learn more?We will continue to update our website: www.burbankparkdistrict.org as well

as our Winter/Spring Brochure. How can I sign up, this sounds awesome? We will have promotional pricing in our Winter/Spring Brochure! There cannot be anything else going on, right? As a matter of fact, the Park District just received word from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, that our OSLAD Fitzgerald Park Grant has been approved. Yes, another great park renovation starting up the spring of 2013.Oh my God, let me catch my breath, Burbank Park District is just awesome!!We cannot do this alone! We have great support from the community and a great staff. Thanks for your continued support and I hope you enjoy the new building and park. Bill Olsen Executive Director

Dogs……They may be your beloved pet, but when they leave “souvenirs” in the park, they become a nuisance to the com munity and violate the park district code.

All animals are prohibited in the parks. Violations are subject to a $500 fine. Remember, the next time your family visits the park, you don’t want to take home that kind of “souvenir”.

Non-Resident Mailing ListIf you live outside of Burbank and wish to receive our brochure, contact our offices at 708-599-2070 to be put on our mailing list. Brochures will be mailed out in late August, December and April.

Early Warning Lightning Detection SystemsThe Park District has installed Early Warning Lightning Detection Systems at Michael Looney, Narragansett, Rice, Harr, Stevenson, MacArthur and Newcastle Parks. If lightning strikes the ground within a 5 mile radius, a horn will sound and a strobe light will flash. If this happens, you should seek shelter in a safe place. After 30 minutes of no ground lightning strikes, an all clear intermittent horn will sound and the strobe light will turn off.

On-Line RegistrationHave no time to get to the Park District? Then visit www.burbankparkdistrict.org to register for your favorite class.

Important Insurance InformationThe Burbank Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants - the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Please review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have the proper coverage.

Special RecreationThrough a cooperative agreement with the Oak Lawn Park District, the Burbank Park District is able to offer children and adults who have a disability, handicap or special need the opportunity to participate in the special recreation program. For more information, call the Oak Lawn Recreation Office at 708-857-2200 or pick up brochure at Newcastle Office.

Program VisitsProgram visits are discouraged. With your child’s best interest in mind, parents are invited to the first and last class. (No siblings please.) Our instructors have found the quality of instruction is affected by parents and sibling distraction during class time. We feel it is most beneficial for children to have recreational time with their peers. Our instructors always welcome the opportunity to discuss the participants progress with parents. Thank you

Public Alert!!!In cooperation with the Burbank Police Department, the Park District has put up 11 surveillance cameras directly linked to Burbank’s Police Department. These 11 cameras throughout the parks are being monitored 24/7 to ensure public and property safety.

Frequently Asked Questions: Why Does A Class Get Cancelled? The Burbank Park District has long been known for offering some diverse programs. Classes and special events meet the varied interests, ages and skill levels of all our residents and those in nearby communities. However, classes sometimes have to be cancelled. There are many reasons why. The first and foremost reason is that a particular time offering does not reach its minimum enrollment requirement. Secondly, a new program of interest that was requested by a few patrons is set up, but does not catch on immediately. Also, an instructor may become ill or suddenly unavailable, or a facility may have an unavoidable schedule conflict. These factors we cannot control, especially if the facility is not owned by the park district. The important thing to remember is that no matter what the reason for the class cancellation, the park district staff will make every effort to accommodate you or a family member into a similar program. If we cannot do this, we will happily refund your money. So take a chance — try something new. Be adventurous. You have nothing to lose and only fun, friendship and new experiences to gain. The Benefits are Endless!

Did You Know…Illinois public park & recreation agencies currently manage:

• 2,240 outdoor basketball courts• 255 outdoor swimming pools• 504 fishing areas• 2,643 outdoor tennis courts• 800 outdoor volleyball courts• 117 golf courses• 401 nature areas• 358 outdoor ice rinks• 1,912 picnic areas• 13 petting zoos• 3,075 playgrounds• 149 sled hills• 1,386 soccer fields• 77 beach facilities• 2,429 baseball fields• 82 driving ranges

Vandalism AlertThe Burbank Park District Board of Commissioners asks that all residents help the Park District in keeping our parks, playgrounds and facilities vandal free. If you see suspicious activity, please dial “911” and report it. Anyone found destroying park district property will be prosecuted.
