AN ORIGINAL BALLET PERFORMED BY THESANGRE DE CRISTO BALLET
SATURDAY, MARCH 14 @ 7:30PMSUNDAY, MARCH 15 @ 2:00PM
Wow - what a year! Looking back at 2014 since my arrival in March, I am impressed by the presence the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center holds in the community of southwestern Colorado. The success of exhibitions like the Celebration of Latino and Chicano Art, SteamPunk, and currently Picasso, Matisse and Chagall until Jan. 18, 2015, has been very exciting. The local artistic output has also been quite compelling with Own Your Own, which included 90+ artists and 400+ works of art!
The Buell Children’s Museum continues to be a powerful draw with H2O Picasso, Winter Wonderland, and so many activities for ALL. Arts Center patrons have enjoyed engaging programs with Center Stage, Children’s Playhouse Theatre, Friday Arts Academy, School of Education, The Arts Associates’ Lecture Series, the Sangre de Cristo Ballet’s sold-out Nutcracker and so many classes.
Another treat for me is getting to know the Arts Centers’ wonderful collection including a great number of works donated by Frances E. King, the Gene Kloss collection given by John Armstrong and so many others who have enriched the holdings. That wonder was enhanced with the announcement
that the “Our Lady of Guadalupe” retablo has been chosen for the Roman Catholic missal worldwide. I am proud to be the Director of such a remarkable place.
The new year of 2015 looks just as bright. We are in the midst of the Representing the West exhibition opening in February, showcasing some of the best Western art from regional and national artists. We will proudly be hosting Colors of the Southwest: The Contemporary Southwest Art Collection of Jeanette & Charles White as the summer exhibit. The show contains some of the most noted artists of the genre, including Frank Howell, R. C. Gorman, John Nieto, and Kevin Red Star to name a few. The Buell Children’s Museum will also be on board the Conestoga wagon - if you will - with exhibits like The Way West - Along the Goodnight & Loving Trail and Colorful Colorado- Camp Create-a-lot!
There are so many life-inspiring resources at the Arts Center, I recommend trying your hand at something new this year. There are also world-class performances in store for you, with New York’s Gilbert and Sullivan Players’ I’ve Got a Little Twist, the satirical Forbidden Hollywood and Grammy Award-winning Chanticleer finishing up the Performing Arts’ season.
None of this would be possible without the Arts Center’s extraordinary board, members, staff, visitors, and volunteers. I am so pleased and thankful to work with each of you, in paving the way for taking our community from good to great. There are many new faces at the Arts Center and more who have kept the ship sailing for some time now. I’m looking forward to what 2015 has in store. I hope you are TOO!
HAPPY NEW YEAR,
Jim Richerson, Executive Director

In this, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s thirteenth year of hosting the Representing the West exhibition, artists were asked to submit work that answers the question, “What does the American West mean to you?” The Invitational showcases pieces of original artwork, including oil and watercolor paintings, pastel drawings, and bronze sculpture with western and traditional subject matter. Walter Piehl, Jr., the western artist known for his vibrant rodeo themed paintings, will jury the exhibition, hand-selecting each piece to display.

This installation artwork is a concerted project from Sand Creek High School art students. These original ideas will grab your attention with creative use of space and subjects. This exhibit is juried by Matt Barton, Co-Director of Visual Art at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs. Barton has a Master’s in Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University and his work has been exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY, the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, the Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, and more.
Ken and Tina Riesterer work together to create unique ceramic pieces inspired by nature: graceful curves, dancing figures, animals. Individually, their paintings of landscapes and people give form to the images they see in their hearts and heads.
Contemporary western artwork uses plexiglass to create multiple layers of experience, demonstrating the significance of observing life both sequentially and simultaneously.

Blockbusters like Star Wars, Titanic, Harry Potter, and Moulin Rouge receive the comic once-over. No film is safe when creator Gerard Alessandrini wields his pen! Thank you Pueblo!
Members of the Arts Associates have been busy volunteering, decorating, gifting, hosting, and looking forward to 2015.
We invite any Arts Center member to join us and have fun at the Center. We meet each third Monday from 9am - 11am in various galleries and meeting spaces within the Arts Center. During summer months, from June through July, we travel to galleries, artists’ studios and museums throughout the state to learn what is going on with our neighbors.
We have many opportunities for enjoyment, volunteering, and education. Please contact the Arts Center at (719) 295-7200 for more information. -Dorothy O’DowdPresident, Sangre de Cristo Arts Associates
