ARTH 175: Introduction to Art History: Prehistory—Middle Ages (3) Global Perspective and Historical Perspective and Humanities and Arts Dr. Burmeister, Dr. Sweeney, Ms. Burke | Various days/times Survey of art and architecture in the major civilizations of Egypt, the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, Medieval Europe, India, China, Japan, and Africa. ARTH 176: Introduction to Art History: Renaissance—Present (3) Global Perspective and Historical Perspective and Humanities and Arts Dr. Stock, Ms. Burke | Various days/times Survey of art and architecture in Western Civilizations, from the Renaissance to the present. ARTH 342: Medieval European Art and Architecture (3) Global Perspective and Historical Perspective and Humanities and Arts Dr. Sweeney | MW 3:30—4:45 Study of medieval art and architecture of Europe from the Early Christian through the Gothic periods. ARTH 348: Modernism (3) Historical Perspective and Humanities and Arts Dr. Stock | TR 3:30—4:45 Study of the art and architecture of Europe and America from 1850 through 1960. ARTH 352: Arts of the Americas (3) Global Perspective and Humanities and Arts Dr. Burmeister | TR 2:00—3:15 A survey of the visual arts of the Americas, with an emphasis on placing the arts within their social and cultural contexts. ARTH 357: Egyptian Art (3) Global Perspective and Historical Perspective and Humanities and Arts Ms. Burke | MW 2:00—3:15 An examination of 3000+ years of art and architecture in ancient Egypt from the Neolithic to the Late Period. The approach will be roughly chronological. A good amount of time will be spent examining singular monuments or objects in historical context. Through lecture and directed readings, students will also discover ancient myths and religious beliefs, and explore the political and cultural constructs of the ancient Egyptian civilization. ARTH 401: Art History Senior Presentation (0) Dr. Burmeister | TBA Final capstone presentation of student proficiency in B.A. in Art History. B.A. in Art History students must enroll in and successfully complete ARTH 401 prior to graduation.

ARTH 421: Visual Culture of Medieval Pilgrimage (3) Global Perspective and Humanities and Arts [PENDING] Dr. Sweeney | T 3:30—6:15 This seminar investigates the origins and growth of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. We’ll explore the factors that motivated pilgrims to undertake such lengthy journeys, survey the variety of Romanesque monuments and sculptures pilgrims encountered along the way, and analyze the legendary stories about saints and miracles that circulated on the trail. Prerequisite: ARTH 175 or ARTH 342 or permission of instructor or MDST 300. ARTH 454: Contemporary Art and Criticism (3) Humanities and Arts and Intensive Writing Dr. Stock | MW 11:00—12:15 An intensive writing course on the art, art theory and criticism in Europe and America from 1960 to the present. Notes: Intensive Writing Course. Prerequisites: ARTH 175, 176, CRTW 201.
