Was born on May 1, 1912, in New York City.

The son of John D. Rockefeller Jr., grandson of John D. Rockefeller.

Studied in a private school in Windsor, Connecticut.

Withdrew from Yale University during his 3rd year without taking a degree.

Completed an Officer Candidate School In 1942 was named commander of H Company,

305th Infantry Regiment, Seventy-seventh Division, Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

He was promoted to captain in 1942 and to major in 1943.

Participated in the Battle of Guam and the invasion of Okinawa

Left the army with the rank of lieutenant colonel, having received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

In early 1953 after visiting a businessman friend Frank Newell Winthrop Rockefeller bought a large amount of land atop Petit Jean Mountain and made a showplace home, which he named Winrock Farms.

Winthrop Rockefeller supported the Arkansas Arts Center. The Rockwin Fund provided support for different causes across the state.

During his nine years of work in Arkansas Industrial Development Commission Rockefeller brought more than 600 new industrial plants to Arkansas, this provided 90,000 new jobs.

Industrial employment in that period grew by 47.5 percent.

In 1966 Winthrop Rockefeller was elected as republican governor, remarkably it was an election in which black voters cast the deciding vote.

Rockefeller won with fifty-four percent of the vote.

Winthrop Rockefeller promised the arkansans an “Era of Excellence”.

In November 1968 Rockefeller was reelected with a huge black majority of voters.

On April 7, 1968, Rockefeller held a public ceremony of mourning for the death of Martin Luther King Jr.

He was the only Southern governor to do so, this later helped Little Rock escape some of the rioting that broke out after King’s assassination.

Ran for a third term as a governor, but was overrun by Dale Bumpers. After this Rockefeller withdrew from the politics.

After his death the wealth of Winthrop Rockefeller was divided between a charitable trust and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.

His son, Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, was first elected Arkansas lieutenant governor in 1996.
