A brief intro to wireless network technology

Instead of using CAT-5 cables to move data through a PROFINET

network, Wireless scalance uses radio waves, eliminating the need

for a physical connection to send and receive data.

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) has set

three standards in the area of wireless technology; 802.11a, 802.11b

and 802.11g (with a fourth 802.11n high speed standard pending). These standards relate primarily to speed (data transfer rates),

    frequency and range.

What is the need of wireless network in this project?

This project was to collect flow readings from 40 flowmeters

which is used by utility and energy management department to

calculate shiftwise consumption of the utility in each area.

These flowmeters are unevenly distributed in different areas of

the plant which are kilometers apart from each other.

To lay cables at each location and bring these readings to a central

station for monitoring was practically difficult.

What was the existing criteria to get the readings?

The existing criteria to get all the readings to the operator in

each shift ,was to assign two persons to go and travel

around the plant in each area and manually note down

the flow and totalised readings from each flowmeter.

They have to climb to those locations where access wasvery difficult.

After getting these readings the operator has to manually

input the data to an excel sheet and send report to their head

    for analysis.

The drawback in this method is, the operator is not getting

the readings of all the flowmeter at one particular time. And

so analysis referring this data will not be perfect.

How wireless technology has improved this situation?

All the 40 flowmeters, distributed in different areas can bemonitored at one single station.

Flow and totalised readings can be calculated more accurately

    and simultaneously for each flowmeters.

Shift reports are automatically generated in Microsoft excelformat and is easily accessible for analysis for any person on the

    JSW LAN network.

Operator will find more time in doing other critical jobs.

Labour of the two persons to reach at inaccessible locations is

    eliminated.

These flow and totalised readings can be used by the utility and

energy management department to more efficiently control the

    utilities of their plant.

Configuration Overview of Wireless Scalance network

A brief explanation of the configuration

All the 40 flowmeters were grouped into 7 different areas and isconnected to the AI module of the remote station (with IM 151-8

    PN/DP CPU).

Each remote station is connected to a wireless client scalance

module W746-1PRO through a wired PROFINET interface.

Each W746-1PRO client scalance module is associated with the

    nearest W788-2PRO Access Point scalance.

4 nos. of W788-2PRO Access Point scalance are associated with

each other in WDS configuration. This WDS configuration is the

backbone of the wireless network, through which data's arecollected from remote client stations and made available at the

    Main Access Point.

Flow and totalised readings are updated in SCADA monitoring

system which is directly connected to the Main Access Point.

    Advantages of Siemens wireless communication

Different levels of security (like Shared Key, WPA-2PSK(Wi-FiProtected Access)),can be implemented to protect the wireless

    network from unwanted access.

Configuration of the scalance through Web Based Management

is very easy and maintenance friendly. The range of the wireless network can be increased(to 200m,

500m, 1000m, 1500m) by the use of antennas having higher

    gain.

Omni directional type antennas doesnt require any line of sight.

Wireless scalance and the antenna is IP 65 graded, so it can be

easily installed outdoors without any additional panel.
