II. GENERAL INFORMATION The Visiplex System 5100 is a paging system capable of addressing up to 10,000 pagers. It consists of a video display terminal (VDT) connected to the System 5100 base unit. The base unit contains an encoder which converts paging data into a form suitable for transmission, and then sends the data to the system's transmitter. The page is broadcast over the system's antenna. The broadcast messages are then received by the appropriate pagers. In addition to the encoder, the base unit also provides the interface for handling four phone lines, eight RS-232 ports, and 24 sets of contacts for receiving hard-wired alarms. System capability can be increased to eight phone lines, two transmitters (one for voice messages, one for digital messages),256 serial ports, up to 96 alarm contacts. If wider metropolitan coverage as provided by Radio Common Carriers (RCC) is required, the System 5100 is able to divert messages to the external RCC system via a dial-up or dedicated line. This access is completely transparent to the user, and is determined by the programming of the system. The pagers themselves run on an AA battery (or AAA, depending on the pager model). Each pager is assigned a number by the system administrator. Valid numbers for pagers are 0000 through 9999.

III. USING THE SYSTEM 5100 A. System Capabilities:

The System 5100 is capable of handling up to 1,000 pager records. Messages can be entered into the System 5100 in a number of ways: operator-assisted via the VDT, via telephone on a PBX system or any outside telephone, through a serial port interface connected to the system, or through a local area network (LAN) interface. The System 5100 can send digital or voice messages, and can therefore be used with visual, tone only, and voice pagers. The message log files are retrievable and can be displayed on the screen or printed out. The system can back up all log files and other data files to floppy disk for long-term backup. The system can list all log files stored on the hard disk. It can also display or print the contents of each pager record, and it can search the pager records by pager name, pager address, group call, or department.

For more information regarding system hardware and software features and capabilities, refer to the Operator’s Manual.

B. General Screen Information:

The System 5100's menus require you to type in the number of the selection you wish to make. Screens which require data entry are made up of a series of fields enclosed by boxes. The prompt for each field appears in the lower left corner of each screen. The status (active or non-active) of all phone lines connected to the System 5100 is shown at all times across the top of each screen. To move the cursor: Use the <UP>, <DOWN>, <LEFT>, or <RIGHT> arrow keys to move the cursor. To move between data fields: Once you have typed information into a data field, accept it into the system by pressing the <ENTER> (sometimes labeled <RETURN>) key. If the information is acceptable, the cursor automatically advances to the next field, otherwise a message appears prompting you to re-enter the information. The cursor will automatically jump over unnecessary fields for your convenience. Also, completely filling a field causes the cursor to automatically advance to the next field. To return to the previous data field, press the <UP> arrow key. To cancel the current operation (and return to the previous screen), press the <ESC> key.

A. Edit Pager Details:

The View/Edit Pager Details menu appears below, followed by a brief explanation of each item on the menu. This menu allows you to view the setup details for a pager already in the system, change the details for existing pagers and add new pagers, if desired.

VISIPLEX, INC. Pager Number is a unique four-digit number from 0000 to 9999. The prompt in the lower left corner of the menu asks for the pager number. When you type in the four-digit number, the system checks to see if the pager exists. If no record of the pager number entered exists in the system, the prompt changes to Options: (N)ew Record, (C)ancel. Enter N for new pager if you wish to add a pager to the system. Enter C if you do not wish to add a pager. If the four-digit pager number entered exists in the system already, the system prompt changes to Select (U)pdate Record or (D)elete Record. The details for the pager will be displayed on-screen. To change any item displayed, enter U for update record. You may now change any data shown. If you wish to delete the pager record from the system, type D. Call Count keeps track of all calls to the specified pager. Name allows you to type in the name (up to 30 characters long) of the person to whom the pager is assigned. Wide/In-House defines whether or not this pager has wide-area paging capability or can only be paged in-house.

Administration Manual Page 7 of 21

Page 13: Wireless Paging System ADMINISTRATION MANUAL

Pager Address is the 7-digit capecode on the pager itself. This is one of the most important fields. It must be filled in exactly to correctly associate this pager record with the specific actual pager. Function allows you to set the type of beeping tone the pager will emit. Enter 0, 1, 2 or 3. (Some voice pagers require the proper function to be activated. Consult the pager manual or contact Visiplex for further information.) Pager Type defines the type of pager. Alphanumeric pagers can display letters and numbers, Numeric pagers can display numbers only, and Tone pagers make a sound but have no visual display. Voice pagers can receive an audible message. Type in the letter appropriate for the type of pager you are setting up. Active Y/N allows you to either activate or deactivate a pager. A deactivated pager's record will remain in the system. To delete a pager's record from the system, return the cursor to the Pager Number field and select D for Delete Record. Group/Indiv. allows you to reach several pagers by paging just one number. Placing a G here makes this record a group record. In reality, this is a phantom record and does not represent a specific pager. Pager Address is not applicable and is therefore set to zero, making the group records easily distinguishable from actual pager numbers. This allows easy identification of group records. A normal pager would have the letter I in this field, which enables it to be paged either individually or as a member of any group. One pager can belong to several groups. Group ID allows you to enter the group(s) to which you want the pager to belong. A single pager can belong to up to 10 groups. Code Format is either Pocsag (international format), Golay (Motorola format), 2-tone or 5/6-tone. Call Divert allows you to divert all pages sent to this pager to another pager in the system. This is useful if someone is going on vacation and wants their pages forwarded to someone else. Note that all calls will be diverted. To divert calls, enter the 4-digit pager number of the pager to which you wish the calls to be diverted. To avoid diverting calls, leave this space empty (four zeroes, or 0000).

Administration Manual Page 8 of 21

Page 14: Wireless Paging System ADMINISTRATION MANUAL

Selecting Y for the Time Stamp option will cause all message log files for this pager, show the time each page was sent. Select N if a time stamp is not desired. IXO Pager ID is used only with wide-area pagers. If this space is left empty, the pager will be accessible by in-house paging only. If you are setting up a wide-area pager, type in the pager's wide-area access number (4 through 7 digits). This access number is assigned by the wide-area paging company and is located on the back of wide-area pagers. Phone Number - Enter the complete wide-area telephone number that must be used to access the pager. For example, if your phone system requires that you dial 9 to gain access to an outside line, you would enter 9-XXX-YYY-YYYY, where XXX is the area code and YYY-YYYY is the 7-digit phone number. Department allows you to enter up to a 16-character department name you wish to associate with the pager. The department name is for record keeping purposes only. If you do not fill a field, press <ENTER> to advance to the next field. Once a field is filled, the cursor automatically jumps to the next field. Once you have entered all desired information, press the <ESC> key. The system will ask whether or not you wish to update the pager record with the new information you have just entered. Enter Y to update or N to cancel.

F. Pre-Programmed Canned Messages:

This menu option allows you to set up pre-programmed (or canned) messages which can be accessed from a touch-tone phone and sent to a pager in the system. The system 5100 can store up to 1000 canned messages, each of which can contain up to 60 characters in length. Each canned message is assigned a number. Entering the number on a touch-tone phone causes the System 5100 to send the complete message to the pager. Several canned messages can be concatenated together to create a combined message. The system is equipped with at least 24 contact closure inputs which can be connected to building security systems, heating and cooling equipment or other equipment which may require monitoring. If a contact closure is received, the system automatically sends out canned messages to the appropriate pagers. The message also appears on the main console. Additional hardware interrupts can be added to the System 5100 if desired. Enter a three digit message number you want to Add. The cursor moves to the MESSAGE field to allow you to enter the text you want to search in the ASCII string of the RS232 serial input. This is also the text that will be broadcast to the pager. Enter any text up to 60 characters long. The cursor than moves to the PAGER field to allow you to assign up to 5 different pagers to this particular alarm message. You can enter any pager from the pager data base into any of the 5 PAGER fields for OnCall schedule once you have entered all the pagers you desire to participate in the OnCall the cursor moves to the schedule array. Once in the schedule array assigning pagers to a particular shift is accomplished by simply inserting the number that corresponds with the pager you wish to assign into the ½ hour slot on the screen. When you finished assigning pagers to the various shifts simply press the enter <CR> key and the system will return to the previous screen. In the example above PAGER 2 (pager 101 in the database) is assigned to the 12 ½ hour time slots between 00:00 and 06:00 on Monday morning. PAGER 1(pager 100 in the database) is assigned to the 12 ½ hour time slots between 06:00 and 12:00 on Monday morning. In this example if an alarm that includes the text “SPRINLER SYSTEM TO MANUAL” comes through the serial port between the hours of 00:00 and 06:00 on Monday morning the system will page pager number 101. The system will automatically page pager 100 if the same alarm occurs between 06:30 and 12:00. To delete a message and its related OnCall schedule select option 3 the screen shown below will appear.
