Applications of the Elmar WirelineShear and Seal Valve

In certain unexpected situations operators or wireline servicecompanies require the ability to cut the wireline cable and seal thewell as soon and securely as possible. Traditionally this might be carried out using either one of the tree valves or a wireline valve (BOP) dressed with a set of shear/seal rams, either of which would beconsidered a non-active secondary barrier. There are drawbacks to both methods:

• The tree valve might not be designed to cut cable and if that is the case even if it does cut the cable it might not seal aft erwards, leading to an even more complex situation. Many operators also require that if a tree valve is to be used as a cutting device it should be equipped with the ability to operate remotely.

• The wireline BOP will cut the cable only if it has been specifically dressed with shear/seal rams. If so, the time taken to make the cut will be a function of the BOP size and the control module used, but is typically 30-60 seconds unless a high volume control module is being used. In addition, many operators will require that the cutting device (in this case, wireline BOP is positioned directly above the production wellhead which in the case of an off shore platform will be below a deck. Considerable rig time will be used to remove hatches to allow the wireline BOP to be lowered onto the wellhead. Further drawbacks include the fact that it is not possible to manually shear the cable and generate a seal in an emergency situation, and if no pressure diff erential exists across the rams an eff ective seal relies upon the continuous application of hydraulic pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions onthe Wireline Shear and Seal ValveQ: Why do I need a WSSV? I have a wireline valve (BOP) which I can dress with shear/seal rams.A: Many operators now call for a dedicated cutter valve, and want it to close fast. The BOP option is also far larger and with a seal which is not as reliable.

Q: I heard it is patented. What aspect is patented? A: The mechanism which prevents damage to the sealing surface whilst the wire is being cut, and therefore allows us to provide such a reliable and repeatable seal with minimal redress requirements.

Q: Where do we put it in the PCE string?A: As close to the wellhead as possible, to reduce the number of active seals should it be activated. It is full bore, meaning that the wireline toolstring can pass through it.

Q: How do I operate it?A: It’s just an hydraulic supply. You can use a control module if you have one already, with our accumulator module connected to it if you wish or, you can purchase the small dedicated WSSV control module. It can be operatedmanually but given that this is a safety device we recommend that manual closing is only considered as a backup.

Q: How long does it take to cut and close?A: It is far quicker than closing BOP rams due to the smaller hydraulicvolume. It depends upon the size of WSSV but it’s around 5-10 seconds.

Q: Does it just cut one wire? What if my tools were blown up the hole and I have a mess of cable pushed into the WSSV?A: The ball will cut multiple strands of cable. We tested with 6 strands of 0.125 slickline. It will cut all common wireline cables in use in our industry today.

Q: Have you actually made many of these or is it just a prototype?A: Yes, these have been requested by operators in all regions of the world and we have sold many of them. We are now launching the MKII version to enhance the WSSV.

Q: What’s the diff erence with the MKII version?A: It is more simple to operate and requires less maintenance between jobs.
