“18 STATEMENTS” IN OUR YEARBOOK

To My Classmates, Class of 1967 of Bishop McDevitt High School

In preparing for our 50th

Class Reunion, we can go to our senior yearbook, Pridwen 1967, to look for

what it said about our class; to see if there is something there that spoke to us from 1967. What is found

turns out to be quite interesting and profound.

The purpose of a high school yearbook is to highlight all the students, all the faculty, all the special

activities during the year, and special accomplishments of students, classes, and organizations.

Pridwen 1967 does that. As we page through Pridwen 1967, we can discover something else that can be

understood to be quite unique and quite profound.

In our search to discover something spoken by the Class of 1967, we found 18 statements distributed

throughout the book. In a review of those statements, we discover that the 18 statements seem to

converge around one main theme of Pridwen 1967 – PEACE – PEACE on Earth and Peace in Individual

Hearts. Here is how we can arrive at that conclusion.

OPENING, CLOSING, AND DEDICATION TO PEACE

On the inside of the front cover is this opening statement for PEACE on Earth:

PEACE ON EARTH, which men of every era have eagerly yearned for, ......... Inside Front Cover

can be firmly established only if the order laid down by God be dutifully observed.

On the inside of the back cover is this closing statement that is a Prayer for PEACE in the hearts of

men and women:

May He banish from the hearts of men whatever might endanger PEACE, .......Inside Back Cover

May He transform them into witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love.

Thus, we have Pridwen 1967 opening with PEACE and closing with PEACE.

Then, on Page 2, we find our dedication of Pridwen 1967 to PEACE by this statement:

Dedicated to Peace – among nations, among races, in the heart. .......................................... Page 2

From that, we see the beginnings of a framework for what is to being said by the Class of 1967.

CENTRAL STATEMENTS ABOUT EVERY HUMAN BEING AND GOD

As we further study the 18 statements, we find 4 that can be considered to be central to the theme of

PEACE.

Human beings have the right and duty to live in communion with one another. ................... Page 4

Every man has the right to life, to bodily integrity. ................................................................ Page 6

Peace I leave with you; My Peace I give to you. ................................................................... Page 7

THE WISDOM OF PRIDWEN 1967

We will delve into the meaning of these 4 statements later in this writing. What we should see now is

“the order of the statements”. We open Pridwen 1967 with a statement about PEACE on Earth that

is followed by our dedication to PEACE for Pridwen 1967, which is then followed by 4 central

statements about PEACE. Thus, we are being setup for what comes next – Curricullum.

CURRICULUM – THE FOUNDATION FOR THE BISHOP McDEVITT STUDENT

After the opening statement, dedication, and central statements, the order of Pridwen 1967 now

brings us to 10 statements about the curriculums of study that were available to students and what

they could mean to the students. After assessing the 10 statements, one for each area of study, we can

conclude that the areas of study are the foundation for the Bishop McDevitt Student upon which to

learn, and thus, create a platform from which to launch their endeavors to pursue PEACE on Earth

and Peace in Individual Hearts. Though the studies in Secretarial Sciences and Home Economics

may seem out moded by today’s standards, what their statements say is still relevant to today and the

future.

Thus, in the Curriculum section of Pridwen 1967, we have 10 topics of study, each with it’s own

statement of wisdom that can contribute to the pursuit of PEACE on Earth and Peace in Individual

Hearts.

WHAT’S OUR PURPOSE IN THIS ENDEAVOR?

At this time, our 50th Class Reunion, we can explore the significance of what was stated in our

yearbook. The 18 statements hold the wisdom we want to extract.

So, let’s explore further what WE said in Pridwen 1967. We will start by giving a view of all

18 statements as seen in Pridwen 1967 including a list of all 18 statements followed by a tabulation of

the scanned pages of Pridwen where the statements appear. Adjacent to each scanned pic is the

statement found on that page. You are invited to parouse all 18 statements and ponder them. You are

invited to consider what was being said by us in those statements and what were our concerns,

wishes, goals, and desires.

“18 STATEMENTS” IN OUR YEARBOOK

Why were 18 statements placed to standout in our yearbook, Pridwen 1967? Were they goals and ideals that we lived then and wanted to continue to live into

the future? Did we want to solve some of the problems faced in the world? Let’s

take at look at what we said as Bishop McDevitt High School’s Class of 1967.

A. THE THEME OF PEACE IN PRIDWEN 1967

When we open the front cover, we find a statement about PEACE ON EARTH (1) prominently

displayed. Then on page __, we find a dedication to PEACE (2). On page __, we find the words of

Jesus (3) , speaking about the PEACE He left and gave us. Finally, on the inside of the back cover,

we find another statement about PEACE (4); actually a prayer about PEACE. Those 4 statementds

are as follows:

(1) PEACE ON EARTH, which men of every era have eagerly yearned for, can be firmly

established only if the order laid down by God be dutifully observed.

(2) Dedicated to Peace – among nations, among race, in the heart.

(3) PEACE I leave with you; My PEACE I give to you. (John, Chapter 14, Verse 27)

(4) May He banish from the hearts of men whatever might endanger PEACE,

May He transform them into witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love.

Obviously, PEACE was to be a main theme of what our yearbook projected. Thus, we dedicated our

yearbook to PEACE. Notice, contained within 3 of the statements about PEACE is a recognition of

our Father God and His Son, Jesus. Here is what we find in those statements:

(1) PEACE ON EARTH. Opening the yearbook, on the inside cover, we have our opening statement

which recognizes that PEACE can only be attained through the order that is laid down by God

and dutifully observed by the people; not just attained, but “firmly established”. Notice, we

made it a conditional (IF) statement. IF people follow (“dutifully observe”) His order, THEN

PEACE can be attained and firmly established. Conversely, IF people do not follow His order,

people will not have PEACE. God often presents us with conditional promises. He requires

something of us prior to the fulfillment of His promise.

(2) DEDICATED TO PEACE. among nations, among race, in the heart.

(3) PEACE I LEAVE WITH YOU. We quote the words of Jesus given in the Book of John,

John 14:27 - PEACE I leave with you; My PEACE I give to you. We can look into the context of

Version Dated September 3, 2016

“18 STATEMENTS” IN OUR YEARBOOK Page 13 of 18

THE WISDOM OF PRIDWEN 1967

what Jesus said if we read verses 25 to 28. These passages are titled, “The Gift of His Peace”.

Thus, the words of Jesus are: 25

“I have told you this while I am with you. 26

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the

Father will send in my name—He will teach you everything and remind you of all that

I told you. 27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do

I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. 28

You heard me tell you,

‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that

I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.”

Is it not interesting that the PEACE Jesus offers is “not as the world gives”. He tells us to not

let our hearts be troubled or afraid. Thus, He puts some responsibility on us with the words

“Do not let”, indicating that we need to make an effort to stay out of feeling troubled or

afraid.

If Jesus offers PEACE “not as the world gives”, then what kind of PEACE are we requesting

in Pridwen 1967 to have in this world? Maybe it’s not only the usual request that is often

made for “world PEACE”, but also and most importantly, the request for “personal PEACE”

in each believing heart in the midst of world circumstances, whether those circumstances are

peaceful or not. Still, we open our yearbook with a hope and request for PEACE ON EARTH.

(4) PRAYER FOR PEACE AND TRANSFORMATION. On the inside of the back cover

we find our prayer for the protection of PEACE from men with unrighteous hearts.

We also find our prayer for the transformation of those unrighteous hearts into hearts that

will seek and witness to “truth, justice, and brotherly love”.

May He banish from the hearts of men whatever might endanger PEACE,

May He transform them into witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love.

Those are prayers that admit to the possibility that our God can transform the unrighteous

hearts of men into righteous hearts that will testify to “truth, justice, and brotherly love”.

They recognize that PEACE is attainable in the individual heart, and thus in communion with

others.

WOW!! After delving into the meaning of only 4 of the quotes that set the theme of

Pridwen 1967, we find an amazing call for PEACE in the world and in individual hearts.

The words we stated and broadcast in 1967, 50 years ago, express a deep desire and call for

PEACE. In this writing, we only touch the surface meaning of that desire and call. As we

look at our world today, in 2017, 50 years later, 5 decades following our high school

graduation, we can see how we STILL desparately need to fulfill our desire and call for

PEACE stated in 1967. The work continues for the fulfillment of God’s promise of PEACE

in our individual hearts. Given what we have seen over the centuries, what we have seen

during our lifetime, and what we see now, it does not seem probable that we will ever attain

world peace, until Jesus returns to make things right. But, surely, individuals can attain an

everlasting PEACE that can affect the whole world

B. HUMAN BEINGS WITH RIGHTS IN A MODERN WORLD

With the overall theme of PEACE in our yearbook, Pridwen 1967, the stage has been set for us to go

further towards attaining PEACE. Following the opening 3 statements on PEACE, we find 3

consecutive statements indicating how and why we should seek PEACE.

(1) On page 3, we find a statement about “Communion with one another”.

(2) On page 4, we find a statement about the individual’s “right to life and bodily integrity”.

(3) On page 6, we find a statement about our modern world has a “Social Life that is varied,

complex, and dynamic”. We will briefly look at each statement.

(1) COMMUNION WITH ONE ANOTHER. We have “the right and duty to live in communion

with one another”. Let’s delve into the communion that is a right and duty.

Communion means ·

The sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially when the

exchange is on a mental or spiritual level.

The service of Christian worship at which bread and wine are consecrated and shared.

synonyms: the Eucharist, Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper.

Communion with one another is extremely important. We cannot do anything without unity

with one another. Being separated while trying to accomplish a purpose is division. A group

cannot survive and grow properly if there is division. Thus, communion with one another, unity

with one another, is a most important condition which leads to PEACE within any group.

Thus, “we have the right and duty to live in communion with one another”. Right allows access.

Duty requies action.

(2) RIGHT TO LIFE AND BODILY INTEGRITY. Life and bodily integrity are seen as rights of

each human being. Let’s look at a definitions.

The “right to life” is a moral principle based on the belief that a human being has

the right to live and, in particular, should not be killed by another human being.

The “right to bodily integrity” — one of the most fundamental of what we consider

human rights — is the right to live without being physically harmed or harassed by

others. No one can touch, hit, harm our bodies, or conduct medical testing on us

without our consent.

If one goes against another’s right to bodily integrity, and offends another person, whether

physically or emotionally, then the offender goes against the victim’s right to a level of personal

PEACE. The ultimate offense against one’s bodily integrity is to take someone’s life. That is the

ultimate offence to one’s personal pursuit of PEACE on this earth. Still, the ULTIMATE PEACE

can be attaned after one’s loss of life on this earth through one’s true faith in and connection with

their Father God and His Son Jesus, through His Holy Spirit.

(3) SOCIAL LIFE AND PEACE.. When we look at the modern world today, we can see how

difficult it is to attain PEACE in this world. The statement that “Social Life in the modern world

is varied, complex, and dynamic” is a hint that PEACE is very difficult to attain in our modern

world that is “very varied, very complex, and very dynamic”. Thus, we see that the challenge to

gain world PEACE is a daunting one. Though it is daunghting, we should not shy away from the

Version Dated September 3, 2016

“18 STATEMENTS” IN OUR YEARBOOK Page 15 of 18

THE WISDOM OF PRIDWEN 1967

pursuit of PEACE, but increase ourselves in various ways to meet the challenge to attain PEACE

in the world, in our communities, and within ourselves with Our God.

In Pridwen 1967, the Class of 1967 believes that the education received at Bishop McDevitt High

School was sufficiently varied, complex, and dynamic to give each Bishop McDevitt student a

foundation to meet the challenge of pursuing and attaning PEACE. Therefore, we move to the

next set of 11 statements found under the section titled “Curriculum”.

C. EDUCATION PROVIDED FOR THE STUDENT TO STRIVE FOR PEACE

In a section of Pridwen 1967 called “Curriculum”, we find a statement for each area of education that

individual Bishop McDevitt students had the opportunity to study and build a foundation upon which

to launch their pursuit of PEACE. Those areas are:

1 Art

2 Secretarial Sciences

3 Home Economics

4 Languages

5 Mathematics

6 Music

7 Physical Education

8 Science

9 English

10 Religion of Christ

11 Social Studies

CURRICULUM. We want to take a look at each one of the statements in the areas of curriculum to

discover how they related to the overall theme of our yearbook, PEACE. We will do so at a later

date. As a refresher, here they are:

1. Art ............................ Further development of God-given talent.

2. Secretarial Sciences The key to understanding the commercial world.

3. Home Economics .... Valuable training for the woman of tomorrow.

4. Languages ............... The gateway to communication in words and ideas.

****************** SECTION C TO BE FURTHER DEVELOPED ******************

D. REACQUAINT AND SORT THIS OUT

Fifty years ago, at the young ages of 17 and 18, did we have a grasp of what was stated in

Pridwen 1967? Did we understand our call and our responsibility to rise to our filfillment of

impacting our world with a message of PEACE? Did we have any idea what it would be like in 2017,

given the “seemingly innocent” days of our youth, our generation? Did we? Whether we fully

understood or not. there must have been some guiding hand for us in the writing of the 18 statements

that were profound then and are even more profound now.

So, what now? With our “interest in the past and concern for the future”, which we stated under

Social Studies, are we working in the present to be an influence for PEACE in our world? Are we

doing that individually and corporately? We should be. We must be doing such work. The diverse

world demands that we do such work. Our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren demand

that we do such work. Our generation, our Class of ’67, must live according to the goals and ideals

we stated in our yearbook, Pridwin 1967.

In planning for our 50th Class Reunion, we received this message from a classmate:

On June 11, 2016, Tom MacAvoy said this:

“Planning [to visit] for 2 weeks? That's not enough time. It took 50 years to get to

this point. We're a bazillion miles and 5 decades beyond where we were in 1967.

Our complexions and features have changed dramatically, as well as our world,

which has taken a few hits along the way. Our 17 year old minds are stuck in 67

year old bodies. It's more apparent now than ever that we think faster than we move.

It's going to take more than 2 weeks to reacquaint and sort this out, but it'll be one

hell-of-a-good time. Looking forward to it.”

Tom wrote those words prior to the development of this document. How fitting his words are in light

of our dedication of Pridwen 1967 to PEACE.

E. CONCLUSION

The statements begin with (1) a dedication to peace, then continue with (2) the recognition of our

right and duty to live in communion with one another, and (3) the recognition of every person right to

life and bodily integrity (meaningwhat?).

Then stated are the words of Jesus from the Book of John, Chapter 14, Verse 27 – (4) “Peace I

leave with you; My Peace I give to you.”

Then stated are thoughts on our Social Life in the modern world that is varied, complex, and

dynamic”, a hint that PEACE is very difficult to attain in our modern world that is “very varied, very

complex, and very dynamic”.

Then, there are 11 statements expressing the type of education we received that included areas of (6)

Art, (7) Secretarial Sciences, (8) Home Economics, (9) Languages, (10) Mathematics, (11) Music,

(12) Physical Education, (13) Science, (14) English, (15) Religion of Christ, (16) Social Studies.

These statements address our education in body, mind, and spirit.

Finally, the last and highly significant statement that is a prayer with 2 requests:

“May He banish from the hearts of men whatever might endanger peace,

May He transform them into witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love.”

Did we expect to say such things that have so much meaning in our world then, today, and into

the future?

Have we lived up to their meaning? Have we passed their meaning to our children, grandchildren,

and great-grandchildren? Will we continue to live up to their meaning, such that we express

“interest in the past and concern for the future”?

Fifty years ago, who would have envisioned the condition of our world today? We are in desparate

need of the goals and ideals expressed in Pridwin 1967. Words that should be carefully considered

are the dedication to PEACE, living in communion with one another, having a right to life, and living

in a varied/complex/dynamic world.

We should also consider that, through our education at Bishop McDevitt High School, much

responsibility is placed on the individual McDevitt student, to be dedicated to PEACE within each

one’s heart and to project that PEACE by living in communion with one another. The communion

with one another calls the Class of ’67 to join as a united community towards achieving our stated

goals and ideals.

In our statements, there is a call that our education at Bishop McDevitt High School would provide

each Bishop McDevitt student with the ability and opportunity to reach their full development and

become a well-rounded individual.

Most importantly, in a statement, there is the call of Christ for each Bishop McDevitt student and

the Class of ’67, to take the peace that He has left us, the peace He has given us, and project that

peace to the nations and races through our dedication to the peace that should be in our hearts,

individually and corporately.

Fifty years ago, did we, at the young ages of 17 and 18, have a grasp of what was stated in

Pridwen 1967? Did we understand our call and our responsibility to rise to our filfillment of

impacting our world with a message of PEACE? Did we have any idea what it would be like in 2017,

given the “seemingly innocent” days of our youth, our generation? Did we?

“18 STATEMENTS” IN OUR YEARBOOK Page 18 of 18

THE WISDOM OF PRIDWEN 1967

So, what now? With our “interest in the past and concern for the future”, are we

working in the present to be an influence for peace in our world? Are we doing

that individually and corporately? We should be. We must be doing such work.

The diverse world demands that we do such work. Our children, grandchildren,

and great-grandchildren demand that we do such work. Our generation, our

Class of ’67, must live according to the goals and ideals we stated in our yearbook,

Pridwen 1967.

A fitting close to this document is what Jesus said, and still says to us,

“Peace I leave with you; My Peace I give to you.”

Sincerely and Peacefully
